    go green

Travel by rail and arrive with a clearer conscience.

Did you know that the train is by far and away the

greenest way to travel? Trains only produce

10-20% of the carbon emissions of a plane (per

passenger). That means, as an individual, you can

make a positive impact by your choice oftransport method. We asked sustainability

consultants Best Foot Forward to calculate the

carbon impacts of travelling from London to one

popular French city by train, car and plane. The

figures shown here are pretty startling.

    Reims

Reims is just under 4 hours from central

London, and with its four UNESCO-listed

World Heritage sites, vibrant cultural scene

and celebrated Champagne houses, it is a

wonderful city for a weekend away. The

Cathedral of Notre Dame is one of the mostbeautiful buildings from the Middle Ages in

Europe. This is where most French kings were

crowned for almost a thousand years, lending

the city its other name; City of Coronations.

    World-famous Champagnes Veuve Clicquot,

Piper Heidsieck, Taittinger and Pommery all

hail from Reims, and you can tour, try and buy

from their famous cellars while you are there.

    Dijon

Dijon is a pretty university city in the east of

France. Famous for its mustard and its wine,

Dijons most impressive building is its

    13th-century Cathedral of Notre Dame.

La Chouette, a little owl carved in one of the

cathedrals pillars, has become Dijons mascot- stroke it for good luck. The owl can also be

seen along the Parcours de la Chouette, a

sightseeing walk marked by little gold owls

embedded in the pavement. Dont forget to

book a tour of the surrounding Burgundy

countryside and its famous vineyards. Most

culminate in a cellar visit with wine tasting

    French Cities

    Lille

Leave after breakfast, arrive in time for lunch.

Lille may be just 1 hour 20 minutes from the

centre of London, but it is quintessentially

French. The cobbled streets, wide squares,

    strong renaissance architecture and elegant

facades exude a heavy Gallic charm, while therestaurants, museums, art galleries and one of

Europes largest shopping centres put all those

essential French treats firmly within reach. Lille

has a strong Flemish influence too, and

nowhere is this better felt than in the Place

General de Gaulle or Grand Place. The citys

main square is flanked by impressive Flemish

buildings and is a great place to relax, soak up

the sun and watch the world go by.

Capital of Alsace, seat of the European

Parliament and home of the largest university

in France, Strasbourg is a cosmopolitan fusion

of French and German, with a few other

influences thrown in! An extravagantly pretty

city, its centre the Grand Ile was declared aUNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, the first

time an entire city centre has ever received

such an honour. It truly is a breathtaking place

Lyon, situated in the east of the country, is the

Frances capital of gastronomy? But like so

many other French cities, theres a strongsupporting cast of lovely architecture, world-

class museums, fine art galleries and a lively

club scene. Early summer is a wonderful time

to visit Lyon, particularly during the Nuits de

Fourvire. This annual festival of music, dance,

plays host to one of the oldest and mostfamous theatre festivals in the world, with

many performances staged in its historic

chapels, cloisters and theatres. Even if you

    Toulon

Toulon basks in the southeast of Provence,

making it the ideal starting point for a driving

holiday in this famously beautiful part of

    France. Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence and Saint

Tropez are all within a couple of hours drive,

but dont forget to venture out into thecountryside to explore the ancient Provencal

villages that pepper the region. Many visitors

take the cable car to the summit of Mont-

Faron Hill, for birds-eye views of the town,

coast and hinterland. The views from the cable

car are impressive, but you can drive up there

Biarritz may be one of the most uber-cool

to be reckoned with too. So, as you collect

your car from the AutoTrain, your dilemma will

be what to do first! You could go straight to

the beach: six whole kilometres of gloriousgolden sand sloping down to the Atlantic,

which rolls in with a force that has made

Biarritz the surfing capital of Europe.

Alternatively, head out of town into Basque
