Visit the C&O Canal at Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center.

The park is a historic waterway, offering mule- drawn boat rides, and natural areas. You can walk or bike along the towpath, or hike the Billy Goat Trail. Cost: $10 car entrance fee; $5 per person entering by foot or bicycle (pass is valid for 3 days).

Take a ride on one of three beautiful carousels!

The Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel in Wheaton Regional Park was built in 1915 and features 33 jumping horses, three zebras and two chariots. Glen Echo Park’s historic 1921 Dentzel Carousel is a classic example of hand wood carving popular during the early 1900s. The Carousel at RIO Washingtonian features beautiful Americana-style scenery and overlooks the lake. Cost: $1.25 - $3.00.

Brookside Gardens is an award-winning 50-acre public display garden situated within Wheaton Regional Park. During the spring and summer season, the garden showcases its Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit. The seasonal display features hundreds of live butterflies from North America, Costa Rica, Africa, and Asia. Cost: $8.

A fun winter activity to spend with the family! The Rockville Town Square Outdoor Ice Rink is one of the largest in the region. The outdoor ice rink at Veterans’ Plaza in downtown Silver Spring is covered by a roof that shines with hundreds of multi-colored lights in the evening hours with music playing through the night. EPIC FAMILY ADVENTURESMontgomery County is home to two world-class zip line courses. Go Ape in Rock Creek Regional Park in Rockville is home to 6 zip lines, including a rad skateboard zip line, 44 unique crossings like the Stirrups, Twister and 2 Tarzan swings. The Adventure Park in Sandy Spring consists of 13 different courses varying in degrees of difficulty. The Adventure Forest is the largest forest climbing park in the nation. Night climbing, or “Twilighting”, is a new feature where the entire park is softly lit with LED lighting.

HIKING HOT SPOTSSugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson is open to the public for hiking, rock climbing, and sightseeing. The popular Blue Northern Peak Trail loop that is 5.5 miles offers scenic views and is rated as difficult. Locals love to hike the Billy Goat Trail at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. The 4.7-mile trail follows the path between the C&O Canal and the Potomac River in Montgomery County and is made up of 3 separate sections.

KAYAK OR CANOE- SUMMER MUST-DO!Experience the beautiful 505-acre Little Seneca Lake in Boyds, as well as the wildlife that makes the lake their home. The 6,300-acre park extends along 14 scenic miles as it winds its way to the Potomac River. Visitors to Rock Creek Regional Park can enjoy the beautiful 75-acre Lake Needwood in rental kayaks, rowboats, canoes, or pedal boats. Take a tour of the lake aboard the Needwood Queen during the summer season.

Be adventurous and try kayaking, paddle boarding, or whitewater rafting in the Potomac. A team of professionals at Potomac PaddleSports can guide you on a fun-filled journey. Catch a glimpse of heron, kingfisher, white-tailed deer, and painted turtles, and learn about the many other wild inhabitants of our river ecosystem.

While many view the nation’s metro area as the center of world politics, it is a cultural hub for musicians and artisans. Montgomery County, Maryland has dozens of museums and galleries hosting art shows and musical performances on a regular basis. Here are some favorites.

Just outside the Capital Beltway, Strathmore Music Center and Mansion has been a beacon for the visual and performing arts since 1981. The 1,976-seat theater regularly hosts favorites like the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, the playbill included Kristin Chenoweth, Patti LaBelle, and Carol Burnett.

The Mansion hosts smaller, more intimate venues and private collections. Walk the elaborate Sculpture Gardens, enjoy tea in the Strathmore Tea Room, or catch a music festival on the front lawn.

AMP by Strathmore is Montgomery County’s newest performing arts venue in the Pike District. AMP combines an eclectic mix of live music and seasonal culinary creations. Enjoy rock, jazz, folk, and rhythm and blues performances during a typical week. The 250-seat concert hall overlooks the new Pike & Rose development in Rockville.

The Arts Barn in Gaithersburg is a repurposed 99-seat theater with performances and rotating art exhibits. The Artist-In-Residence studios focus on their craft and community outreach. The Sandy Spring area has strong historicalties to Underground Railroad activity. The Montgomery County Historical Society,located in Rockville, operates two museumsand a research library. The Beall- DawsonHouse, an elegant circa 1815 Federal-styletownhome, displays the history and heritage of Montgomery County. The Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine investigates the changes in medical practice from 1852-1903, the years Dr. Edward Stonestreet practiced medicine in this one-room, freestanding doctor’s office. In Poolesville the Seneca Schoolhouse Museum still stands. Once a one-room school built of seneca sandstone.The Monocacy Aqueduct is a restored 174-year old seven-arched aqueduct that spans 516 feet in length over the Monocacy River.
