ABOUT SINGAPORE… Singapore officially the Republic of Singapore, and often referred to as the Lion City, the Garden City, and the Red Dot, is a leading global city-state and island

country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, one

degree (137 km; 85 mi) north of the equator, and is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of

Johor to the north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to the south.

Singapore's territory consists of the diamond-shaped main island (commonly referred to as Singapore Island in English and Pulau Ujong in Malay) and more than 60

significantly smaller islets. Since the 1960 ongoing land reclamation projects have increased Singapore's land area, which is highly urbanised, by at least 20%.

Little india…

Page 14: travel assignment on singapore

History of little india…Little India is distinct from the Chulia Kampong area, which, under

the Raffles Plan of Singapore, was originally a division of colonial Singapore where Tamil immigrants would reside under the British

policy of ethnic segregation. However, as Chulia Kampong became more crowded and competition for land escalated, many ethnic Tamils moved into what is now known as Little India. (The

Chulia Kampong district no longer exists as a distinct area.)

The Little India area is reported to have developed around a former settlement for Tamil convicts. Its location along the Serangoon

River originally made it attractive for raising cattle, and trade in livestock was once prominent in the area. Eventually, other economic activity developed, and by the turn of the 20th

century, the area began to look like a Tamil ethnic neighbourhood.

Little India was the site of a two-hour-long riot that occurred on 8 December 2013, after a man was killed in a traffic accident. 27

people were injured, and 40 people were arrested.

HISTORY OF ZOO… Prior to the establishment of Singapore Zoo, there were

other short-lived zoos in Singapore’s history, including the first recorded zoo founded in the early 1870s at the present-day Singapore Botanic Gardens, a zoo opened in the 1920s in Ponggol by animal trader William Lawrence Soma Basapa and two zoos run by two brothers by the surname of Chan during the 1960s

The conception of the Singapore Zoo dates from 1969. At the time, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) decided to use some of its land holdings around reservoirs for parks and open recreational facilities. The then Executive Chairman of PUB, Dr Ong Swee Law, set aside 88 hectares of land for the construction of a zoological garden

In 1970, consultants and staff were hired, and in 1971, the construction of the basic 50 enclosures started. Animals were collected from dealers and donated by sponsors. The Director of the Colombo Zoo in Sri Lanka, Lyn de Alwis, was hired as a special consultant to work out problems inherent in tropical zoos.

Sentosa Island…

Page 20: travel assignment on singapore

The island was renamed "Sentosa" in 1972, which means peace and tranquility in Malay (from Sanskrit, Santosha), from a

suggestion by the public. The Sentosa Development Corporation was formed and incorporated on 1 September 1972 to oversee

the development of the island. Since then, some S$420 million of private capital and another S$500 million of government funds

have been invested to develop the island. In 1974 the Singapore Cable Car system was built, linking

Sentosa to Mount Faber.A series of attractions were subsequently opened for visitors including Fort Siloso, Surrender Chamber wax

museum, Musical Fountain, and the Underwater World. The causeway bridge was opened in 1992 connecting Sentosa to the

mainland.

Sentosa Island history…

Page 21: travel assignment on singapore

The Sentosa Monorail system was opened in 1982 to transport visitors across seven stations located around the western side of

the island. On 16 March 2005, the monorail service was discontinued to make way for the new Sentosa Express, which commenced operations on 15 January 2007.An environmental

assessment conducted by the government of Singapore concluded that the construction of an integrated resort on Sentosa

would to result in high likelihood of high scale biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, soil erosion and climate change, as well as

several other destructive ecological impacts, therefore, in the area that was to be cleared for the construction of the resorts, over two hundred trees and plants were replanted elsewhere on the island

to minimize negative environmental impact.

To be continue…
