The Transportation System
The transportation system is made up of:
• travelers and freight;
• the origins and destinations across all land uses;
• all types of vehicles;
• programs that provide transportation or seek to alter travel behavior; and
• the resources used for travel including physical infrastructure, control systems, terminals, communications systems, and energy.
Planning and Funding $

• Vermont has dozens of marinas: – Apple Island Marina, Burlington Community Boathouse, Champlain
Marina, Ladd’s Landing Ltd., Newport Marina, North Hero Marina, Shelburne Shipyard, and many more!
Rail in the U.S.
• Trains travel 599 million miles each year
• There are 125,000 rail transportation jobs
• Hauling freight by rail is more efficient than hauling it by truck
• Some estimate: – 1 ton of freight can be moved
436 miles on 1 gallon of fuel!
