A Word From the Publisher

Mother Nature intruded upon business in 2011 in a way that

could alter for many years how many companies manage

their increasingly far-flung supply chains and just-in-time

distribution strategies, according to several logistics executives.

These executives said they are fielding more inquiries from shippers

about moving production out of Asia and lining up additional sources

of raw materials and components to avoid the kind of disruptions that

occurred following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

“Companies are hedging their bets,” said Jim Monkmeyer, managing di-

rector of supply-chain engineering for Salt Lake City-based

England Logistics, which ranks No. 41 on our latest TRANS-

PORT TOPICS Top 50 list of the largest logistics companies in

the United States, Canada and Mexico, based on revenue.

Stephen Dean, senior vice president of sales and mar-

keting for Miami-based Ryder Supply Chain Solutions,

No. 5 on the TT Logistics 50 list, said one company — a

U.S.-based electronics manufacturing firm — halted

plans to move all of its production to Singapore and in-

stead plans to set up plants in both Mexico and Singapore.

“Companies with complex global and extended supply

chains are more cognizant of disruptions, whether it’s a

port strike or earthquake,” Dean said. “They’ve learned

through hardship that they need to have contingency plans to keep their

business up and running.”

The potential for supply-chain disruptions wasn’t limited to faraway

places. In North America, floods inundated highway bridges and rail lines

in the Upper Midwest and later affected parts of northern Mexico, while

an outbreak of tornadoes in the spring devastated parts of the Southern

United States, flooding from hurricanes plagued portions of the East

Coast and a rare October snowstorm buried parts of the Northeast.

“If companies aren’t making changes, they will do so soon,” said

Robert Lieb, a professor of supply-chain management at Northeastern

University in Boston.

To protect supply networks, Lieb said, companies are expanding the

number of suppliers they use and are keeping more critical materials in

inventory to guard against costly production shutdowns and running out

of merchandise.

“If you look at the money lost [because of plant shutdowns], it dwarfed

the savings from inventory reductions,” Lieb said in an interview with

senior features writer Daniel P. Bearth.

George Abernathy, president of Transplace Inc., Frisco, Texas, said

customers are looking at expanding the number and location of distri-

bution centers.

“Getting product closer to the customer gives them the ability to react

if there is a disruption,” he said.

Perhaps the most significant change resulting from recent supply-chain

disruptions is a greater willingness of shippers to collaborate

with carriers, said Robert Byrne, chief executive officer of

Terra Technology, Norwalk, Conn., a company that supplies

software for sales forecasting and transportation planning.

Against this backdrop of contingency planning, overall

spending on logistics services is accelerating as business

activity continues to recover from the global economic

downturn in 2009.

Gross revenue for third-party logistics service providers

in the United States increased 18.9% to $127.3 billion in

2010 from $107.1 billion in 2009 and is projected to top

$141 billion in 2011, according to a report by Armstrong

& Associates, Stoughton, Wis.

The 2011 TRANSPORT TOPICS Top 50 Logistics Companies list also re-

veals a trend toward consolidation, with Ryder Supply Chain Solutions

(No. 5) and Genco ATC (No. 7) each making acquisitions of companies

on the Top 50 list a year ago. Ryder purchased Total Logistic Control

(No. 37 in 2010) and Scully Distribution Services (No. 50 in 2010).

Genco Supply Chain Solutions acquired ATC Logistics & Electronics

(No. 32 in 2010).

The debut of Total Quality Logistics (No. 45) on the 2011 Top 50 list

also is significant. The Cincinnati-based brokerage firm represents a

new breed of aggressive, sales-oriented freight brokerage firms that are

making a name for themselves in a segment of the logistics industry

long dominated by C.H. Robinson Worldwide (No. 6).

Acknowledgments and SourcesInformation came from company management and other sources. Revenue estimates are based on data supplied by Richard Armstrong of Armstrong & Associates, a logistics

industry consultant.Senior Features Writer Daniel P. Bearth coordinated the project. He was assisted by Karen Villar. Cover design is by George Dively, director of art and production. Layout design is
