Transport activity pack – Key Stage 1 . Welcome! At the moment, it is important for us to stay at home as much as possible, to help reduce the spread of coronavirus. Normally we want everyone to use public transport. But at the moment we’re asking most people to avoid Greater Manchester’s buses, trains and trams. If you’re missing the transport network, there’s a range of activities in this pack to help you enjoy it from the safety of your own home. The activities are aimed at Key Stage 1 Primary School children. But you’re never too old to solve a puzzle, design a tram or do a bit of colouring in! Answers can be found at the end of the pack. We hope you all have fun thinking about different ways to travel, like cycling, walking, driving or catching the bus, train or Metrolink tram. An important message: People still need to make journeys, but it’s important to stay safe no matter how we get around. There is limited space on public transport and fewer services running. So we need to leave our buses, trains and trams for key workers like doctors, nurses and shop workers, and other people who rely on it. If you need to make a journey, please try to stay local and walk, cycle or drive. In the future, when it is safe to, more people will be able to enjoy our buses, trains and trams again. But for now, we hope you’ll enjoy the transport network from home, using the resources in this pack. Please share your transport art with us @OfficialTfGM on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

An important message:People still need to make journeys, but it’s important to stay safe no matter how we get around.

Transport activity pack – Key Stage 1 Future of travel

How do we travel now?

We all travel in different ways, depending on where we live and where we are going.

In Greater Manchester people mainly travel by:

Walking Cycling Bus Metrolink Train Car

Think about all the ways that you have travelled and complete the following sentence:

My favourite way to travel is by _____________________ because _____________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________.

Transport activity pack – Key Stage 1Future of travel

How might we travel in the future?

200 years ago, people mainly travelled by horse and cart – this is very different to how people travel now.

The invention of the car meant horses stopped being the main way to travel.

Some travel inventions being tested now are:

• Autonomous cars – cars which drive themselves

• Elevated cycle paths – roads just for bikes that are built above houses

• Super trains – trains which travel four times as fast as current trains

THINK What do you think life will be like in 200 years? What inventions will have changed about the way we travel? What invention would you like to create?

In the box on the next page draw a picture of how you think we will travel in the future. Remember to give your new way of travelling a name!

Transport activity pack – Key Stage 1 Create your dream street

Streets around the world

We all live in different homes, in different sizes, and in different locations.

No matter where we live, when we travel to the shops or the park, we use the streets near our home.

Streets are different not only in Greater Manchester, but around the world! Would you like to live on any of these streets?

Brighton, UK Venice, Italy

Bangkok, Thailand San Francisco, USA

If you could create your dream street, what types of thing would you like it to have? Are there things on your current street you would like to keep or change?

THINK about what facilities your dream street would have? What types of noise and smells will your dream street have? How will people move around the street? What transport facilities will the street have?

In the box on the next page draw a picture of your dream street. Remember to give your street a name!
