The Historical Background of Translations

For hundreds of years, Ireland has experienced a yo-yoing shift of power, with warfare and politics leaving deep memories in the people's history. As you enter the world of Translations, the characters are trying to survive in an Ireland where politics, agricultural stress, and forced changes to their culture greatly affect their attitude and behavior. In the 1830s, the country still had an "image" of being backward d difficult, but was expected to be loyal to British Parliament.

The Act of Union of 1800 transferred all political power to London, taking away native control of the country. Facing wars with France, Britain pushed for this Union out of self-interest. In addition, Irish Catholics had almost no say in government ruling. Conflict between Catholics and Protestants grew as Catholics demanded more political rights and equality. Catholics (the vast majority of Ireland's population) and Presbyterians had to pay tithes to the Anglican Church of Ireland. The Catholic population followed the campaigning of Daniel O' Connell, who embarked on a non-parliamentary campaign for emancipation without the use of violence or questioning the government. His profound impact on Catholics of all classes is evident in the character Maire's enthusiasm for his beliefs.

Rising population, which grew from 5 million in 1800 to over 8 million in 1841, and the lack of sufficient good farming land forced up the rents, affecting many of the already poor and borderline starving. Farming methods were outdated and would not be changed until AFTER the Potato Famine in the 1840s, which resulted in over a million deaths. Immigration was an option for some, whose family farmlands were too small to be divided up between sons.

Hedge schools, "community" schools created mainly from rural poverty and lack of resources had a long tradition of teaching grammar, Latin, math, and other subjects to those who were unable to attend national schools. As commerce and interaction with the outside world grew, an education became essential to be a successful merchant or escape the agricultural society. But in 1830, when the first "national" schools (funded by the government) started to be built around the country, it caused the decline of hedge schools and a shift in Ireland's cultural tradition.

All this turmoil was bubbling under the surface, and was often later called "The Irish Question" by the British but was not really being addressed by the government. Instead, the British Government was creating " Public Works" programs, like the building of roads or like in Translations, creating "accurate" and thoroughly English maps of Ireland's countryside. Major Thomas Colby, who created an extensive mapping of England's countryside, was sent with all of his staff to a place most of Britain knew little about and had a language few could speak.
