Transition at Middle School Schedule Change

Staff is proposing to change middle schools from a 7 period day to a 6 period day.

Currently, the middle schools have a two period block of Language Arts/Reading taught by one teacher. The change would be to one period of English. Students in READ 180 will still be in a two period block.

Page 13: Transitions to Common Core at Middle and High School

• Periods would change from approximately 45 minutes each to 54 minutes allowing more time for Math, Social Science and Science.

• Common Core emphasizes reading and writing in the content areas.

• Teachers would be teaching 5 periods a day instead of 6, therefore they would have less students assigned to them and the ability to make more connections with their students.

Page 14: Transitions to Common Core at Middle and High School

• Currently teachers in the CORE areas (except Reading/Language Arts) are assigned approximately 204 students each. This would change to approximately 165 students daily

• English teachers at the middle schools may be reduced. English teachers currently teach approximately 100 students a day. This would increase to 165 with this change

• English teachers will continue to teach a blocked READ 180 class and may teach an exploratory courses

LEA has been involved in the discussion to move to a six period day.

It is anticipated there will be no lay off of teachers due to attrition and transfers
