Transition Wilmslow lessons learnt- houses
• Get neighbours helping each other – build community too
• Saving Money is the great lever
• Green Doctor very useful for all
• The way people live and what else it has done, not age or type of house are most important factors.
• Dormer windows, bungalows with roof rooms, 60’s houses with tiles are a problem.
Other learning
• Anaerobic digesters – too much competition locally now so better not to plan our own
• Top tips useful
• Church halls not used all the time – so less cost saving by insulation
• Lack everywhere of cavity and floor and roof insulation
• People make the difference?
• Employ someone!
Transition Wilmslow cutting your losses inside your home
Closing your curtains is an easy
way to keep the house warmer and
cut bills
The cold draught around that door is blowing all the nice warm air out of
your house, you could do with fitting some
draughtproofing tape
Cold ceiling - you could insulate the loft, and stop all
the heat going out through the cold
ceiling
That loft hatch
looks cold!
But after seeing that picture, the householder put some insulation board
onto it, and now the heat won’t be escaping and wasting money
Closing your curtains is an easy
way to keep the house warmer and
cut bills
Transition Wilmslow cutting your losses to the outside
This resident learnt how his wall was glowing with heat from the radiator
under the window coming straight out
through the wall
So he insulated behind it with
radiator foil, and now the
radiator warms his house more rather than the
street
This roof glows, losing heat to the
outside
This one’s been better insulated, warmer house,
lower bills
Spot the difference… the window on the right has had the curtains drawn,
lowering the temperature of the
window, so letting less heat out
This one doesn’t, since taking the first picture, the owner has fitted a draught
excluder
Does your letterbox glow? – or just let the heat through?
Summerfield Modern 4 bedroom house, losing heat
through roof and totally uninsulated loft hatch
Handforth Renovated 1960s house,
With mostly well insulated roof, and cavity wall
insulation. Lovely warm neighbours without cavity fill
Wilmslow Modern 4 bed house with
poorly fitted double glazing, leaking heat around the
windows, and poorly insulated roof
Wilmslow area This demonstrates leaky
walls, with unfilled cavities, and leaks between hanging
shingles/slates
An uninsulated wall can be very cold to sleep next to in winter
Draughts may not be sexy, but when they’re costing you energy, you might
want to give them your attention
Uninsulated pipes under this floor will be losing energy all year round
A flat roofed extension with little insulation to keep the heat where it’s
wanted
You’ll want to insulate that panel, it’s got a radiator behind it!
Wilmslow A roof that glows heat at
all times of day, and a cold inside wall section,
with heat loss and risk of damp
Wilmslow 1900s property losing heat
through wall without cavity fill. Detail shows more warming through air brick, possibly
unavoidable, but worth investigation
