Dear Prospective Travelers,

It took a small group of committed folks about three years to make the dream come true for HS/HT students. The collaborative effort of the Georgia Department of Labor/Vocational Rehabilitation, Tools for Life, The Georgia State Rehabilitation Council, Tech-Able, Touch the Future and High School/High Tech made the dream a reality. But the solution was not as easy as one would think, nor did it happen magically and without delays.

With each delay encountered, the Recycled Computer Committee (RCC) took a long hard look at the process and determined how to remove the barriers, how to move forward, and noted the lessons learned. It seemed that each time the group was at the threshold of actually refurbishing and distributing computers, another obstacle was placed in its path. This continued to be the pattern for nearly three years.

Yet each barrier provided the opportunity to learn more -- on both the technical and bureaucratic level. By working through the process and over and around the barriers, the RCC developed application criteria and contracts, determined software needs for transition students, scrutinized cost efficiencies, and designed an effective selection and distribution process. In essence, the RCC created a standard for donated equipment that other individuals and organizations can replicate. Using lessons learned, the RCC put into place a system that can go beyond the boundaries of HS/HT.

Now sit back, relax and enjoy the journey!Janie & the RCC

Maritza Rodriguez is it a student with orthopedic impairments…she uses a power chair and as we can find motor skills. She is unable to write legible a with pens or pencils and uses the computer at home to complete classroom work. She has lost her ability to speak and also uses the computer for communication. She was very excited to apply for a computer and made it clear that it would help her to communicate her needs at home and at school. Her mom said that now Maritza In clearly communicate her needs and it has shown them skills they didn’t realize Maritza had!

I really appreciated the generous donation. I value the fact that I was accepted to receive a laptop computer. It brings me great joy knowing that I will have extra help in my transition from high school to college. This computer is a great investment in my future. I know I will be able to keep up in school and challenge myself to be the best. The laptop will good to good use. Thank You,Brandy Wright
