Hero’s Journey:Sam Witwicky

Stage 1:The Call: Laserbreak, a Decepticon (bad guy) attack

Sam at work and he learns that the Autobots (good guys) are once again in trouble.

The Refusal: Sam visits the Autobot/Government headquarters. The government is resistant to allow Sam to work with the Autobots. They tell him he is not needed and “just a messenger.”

The Supernatural Tool: Bumblebee is Sam’s supernatural tool. He is Sam’s yellow Camaro.

Crossing of the Threshold: Sam had the courage to team up with the Autobots despite the government’s doubts and fight against the Decepticons.

The Belly of the Whale: Sam was at his lowest point when he was being blackmailed by the Decepticons. He felt completely helpless and alone because he lost his girlfriend, Carly, thought the Autobots were all killed, and had a bracelet on that shocked him everytime he resisted the Decepticons.

Hero’s Journey:Stage 2:

The Road of Trials: Sam was determined to overcome all obstacles and odds to defeat the Decepticons, save the world, and save Carly.

Apotheosis: The Autobots defeated the Decepticons at what seemed like the very last second. Sam sucessfully saved Carly and won her back.

The Boon: Sam proved his worth to the government by substantially aiding the Autobots in defeating the Decepticons and saving humanity.

Situational Archetypes

The Task: Sam’s task was to save Carly and prove his worth to work with the Autobots. The Autobot’s task was to save humanity from becoming enslaved by the Decepticons.

The Fall: Sam’s fall was when the Decepticons and the humans who worked with them put the painful watch on Sam and began blackmailing him.

Good vs. Evil: Autobots (good guys) vs. Decepticons (bad guys) in a fight for humanity. Decepticons wanted to enslave humans to rebuild their home planet. Autobots are allies with the humans so their goal is to protect them from all evil.

Character Archetypes

The Mentor: Optimus Prime is a mentor to Sam because he taught Sam about himself and to always have faith in himself. Seymour Simmons was also a mentor because he taught Sam about the history of the harsh feelings between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Initiates: Sam was proving his worth to the government and Carly was proving that she could handle Sam’s association with the Autobots.

Loyal Retainer: Bumblebee was Sam’s car. Bee always had his eye on Sam and swooped in to save him at the last second.

Hunting Group of Companions: Ironhide, Ratchet, Sideswipe, and the Wreckers were part of the Autobot team and were also determined to save humanity.

Dasmel in Distress: Carly was kidnapped by the Deceoticons and the humans who worked with them. Sam had to defeat them to save her.

Devil Figure: Megatron was the leader of the Decepticons. Setinal Prime was originally with the Autobots, but betrayed them because Megatron promised him fame and glory.

Major Archetypes

The Wise Old Man: Optimus Prime was the wise, experienced leader of the Autobots.

The Trickster: Wheelie was originally a Decepticon who turned to the Autobot side in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. He enjoys being a nuisance and being a smart mouth.

Symbols:

Carly: Carly wears white during the entire movie. She symbolizes hope and goodness.

Autobot Colors: The Autobots are bright, happy colors, symbolizing goodness. For example, Optimus Prime is blue and red.

Decepticon Colors: The Decepticons are dark, dull colors, symbolizing evilness. For example, Megatron is grey and beige.
