If you google the phrase, ‘making the most of Christmas’ you will get all sorts of links and websites to maximise your experience of the many seasonal festivities.

• Making the most of Christmas Sales• Making the most of Christmas TV viewing • Making the most of Christmas Cards • Making the most of Christmas Groceries • Making the most of Christmas Holidays • Making the most of Christmas Leftovers

Yes! There are some great insights in all those links, but how do we really make the most of Christmas? How do we make the most of Christmas, spiritually and personally? We find the answer to this question in the words of the angels who appeared to the shepherds at the time Jesus Christ was born … on that very first Christmas: “But the angel reassured them, saying, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy

BY DALE WHITE

that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” … “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.” Luke 2:10-11, 14 (NIV)

These are profound words, and from them we learn how to make the most of Christmas:

1 MAKE IT A TIME FOR CELEBRATION “I bring you good news of great joy!”

Christmas is a time to celebrate all that God has given us and done for us. It’s a time to set aside our problems and pressures for a moment and focus on God. If God wanted to communicate to birds, he would have become a bird. But he wanted to communicate to human beings, so he became like one of us and came to Earth. Now we can know what God is like because Jesus shows us.

Dale White has been Senior Pastor of HumeRidge Church of Christ since 1998.

What is salvation? Quite simply it means ‘rescue’ but it includes forgiveness for our past, power over our present problems, and a guarantee for our future. But like any gift, we must accept it in order to benefit from it. Lifeguards will tell us that we can’t save people until they stop thrashing around trying to save themselves. We must stop trying to save ourselves and instead trust Jesus to be our Saviour. The reason Christmas is such a big deal is because this Jesus wasn’t just any baby. He was (and is) the Son of God who came with the expressed purpose of saving us from sin.O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

3. MAKE IT A TIME FOR RECONCILIATION “Let there be peace ...”

The angels sang about peace on earth and goodwill to all men. Christmas is a time to seek to restore those broken or strained relationships. It’s a time to say “I’m sorry” and “will you forgive me?” It’s also a time to offer forgiveness to all those who have hurt us. First we make peace with God, and then we receive the peace of God. Once we have that we’ll find it much easier to make peace with other people. Will you make the most of Christmas? Make the most of this annual opportunity? Is there someone to forgive this Christmas? Or is there someone whose forgiveness you should seek?As we learn to follow the Christ who was born that first Christmas, we enjoy celebration, salvation and reconciliation … and we can really make the most of Christmas!

Of all the ways God could have come to Earth, he came the same way every one of us did — by a birth. Why? Because he didn’t want us to fear him, and no one is afraid of a baby! Christmas says God wants us to know him. So make Christmas a time for celebration. At HumeRidge we plan our Christmas services to be fun-filled, family-oriented occasions of good news and great joy. It really is a time for celebration!

2. MAKE IT A TIME FOR SALVATION“Your Saviour has been born...”

If we needed information, God would have sent an Educator. If we needed more government, He would have sent a Politician. But what we needed most is salvation, so God sent us a Saviour. “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

Mention Christmas and Family together and snapshots of moments captured over time appear in my mind. Be it making Happy Birthday Jesus cakes with young children; decorating Gingerbread houses with too many lollies; the smells of baking goodies made to share together; or holidays at the beach - our Christmas is about spending time together as family. For us this also includes competitive board game challenges.

CONNECT FOUR: remember this game where to win you must line up four counters in a row, a column or a diagonal by dropping them in vertical shoots? It is a strategy-based game for two people. Whatever game is chosen it is serious business in our family.

GAME CHALLENGE: How many times can we beat Dad this year?

CONNECT PAW: a new snapshot will be added this year. This will be our first Christmas as part of the Guide Dog family. Earlier this year we rehomed a retired Guide dog, a black Labrador retriever named Zac. He will enjoy some beach time with us over the holidays. As long as there is someone around Zac is happy, even more so if there is a ball involved.

Game challenge: To find a ball that cannot be deflated or destroyed in the first game with Zac.

CONNECT ALL: At this time of year my thoughts turn to others who do not have family around them and to those who find it difficult to celebrate the season. Like my friend who has recently said goodbye to a significant person in her life. Her celebrations will be full of happy-sad moments as she remembers.

GAME CHALLENGE: Reach out to the person that you know who is hurting this Christmas season.

CONNECT MORE: Whatever family you identify with - be it your own, another family, even a Guide dog family; this Christmas take the time to show that you care and appreciate the sense of belonging and love this family gives you. Remember the family that we all belong to: connect to God.

GAME CHALLENGE: This year, do more than play the game.

BY JALENA MARTIN

As for the Martin family, we will be competitively playing a yet-to-be-purchased board game. Any suggestions?

FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOUR FAMILY, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We ate and were served by our grade 9 clumps, mingled, chatted, took photos, and of course, DANCED the night away.

Finally we were gifted with a special performance from Russell at the end of the night that brought the whole crowd to their feet. It was a fantastic night had by all, and we would like to thank the tech boys, those who served in the kitchen and our Grade 9’s for helping out on the night.

Finally, we want to say a massive thank you to our Grade 12’s who have brought so much character, fun and zeal to our youth group.

Our prayer for you is that you will remember some of the important things you learnt through your time at youth, and the wonderful memories you have made!

As we conclude another fantastic year of HumeRidge Youth Group, we celebrated our wonderful Year 12’s in style with the annual ‘Humies’ Formal Night for Grade’s 10-12.

This year, we recognised the important contribution the Year 12’s have made in making our youth group what it is.

From stellar singing and performing by Russell, to the master of magnets himself, Andrew Crowley, the ‘unusual’ antics of Dane, sweet sounds from Marna and Tom, the blondness of Adut, and the enthusiastic and inclusive attitude of all, we have been incredibly fortunate to have such a great group of young people!

In 1 Peter 2:9, 15, an aging apostle Peter describes Christians with the metaphor of ‘priests’, “a holy priesthood…a royal priesthood….” The priests of Israel had a specifically and exclusively spiritual role and so when Peter writes of Christians as priests, he’s announcing something new and quite avant-garde about the Christian life.

‘What does a Christian priest look like?’ Robes, crosses, celibacy?’

No, Peter wasn’t thinking about liturgical participation in corporate worship. In his letter there’s no thought of an increased level of involvement on Sundays… greeting people at the door, serving coffee after services or being part of a music band. He wasn’t thinking primarily about leading a home group, preaching a sermon, or giving a communion talk. He didn’t have

school chaplains, R.E. teachers or missionaries foremost in his mind, although, all the above can be part of the Christian’s priestly roles.

His principal purpose for using the term ‘priest’ was to wake us up to our priestly role of spiritual service every day, from Monday to Saturday. Martin Luther said, ‘The works of monks and priests... differ no whit in the sight of God from the rustic toiling in the field’.

Whether you’re teaching in a classroom with 20 to 30 kids, driving a truck, serving customers across a counter, taking kids to school, looking after grandchildren or managing an office, all are priestly roles of Christian service. Dallas Willard wrote, “Holy people … must take up holy orders in farming, industry, law, education, banking, and journalism with the same zeal previously given to evangelism or to pastoral and missionary work.”

As holy priests, everything we do with the right attitude and with the right motive is God’s work. There is no sacred and secular role among the people of God, because whatever we do, we do to the glory of God. So let’s break free from the deception that only service that carries a church’s label, or has a Christian brand mark is God’s work.

As we start our 2015 year, HumeRidge is going to look at this in greater depth in a series called, “Fruitfulness on the Frontline”. We believe this is not only a current, but a core issue for the church. And so we are encouraging everyone in our church along with all home groups to invest in the series. It begins on Sunday February 1st, in both morning and evening service each week. Visiting speaker Murray Wright will launch the 8 week series, ‘Fruitfulness on the Frontline’ at both services.

HumeRidge could not offer English classes without our fantastic volunteer teachers, tutors and assistants. The question often asked is “How do our teachers feel about teaching English to non-English speakers?” Here are some responses:“ God’s grace amazes me in the way He fills my heart with love for people of other cultures; and the immeasurable joy He gives in building relationships as I seek to reflect God’s love.”

“ Helping out at English classes has made a difference in my life. I’m floored every time I speak with a new migrant, at the sheer challenge and obstacles they face, just with the language barrier alone! And so many

The HumeRidge English Centre was birthed from a desire to meet the needs of Toowoomba’s Refugees, Migrants and International Students struggling to integrate into the community due to language barriers. Not being able to communicate well in English leaves adults isolated, students struggling at school and university, and reduces employment opportunities. Communication difficulties also increase perceived cultural barriers and can cause segregation. By creating a safe place for people to come a learn English we hope to see more people integrated into Toowoomba’s community, seeing their families thrive and achieving their personal goals.

of them just take this in their stride, and rise to the many challenges with such courage and determination. I’m in awe of them! They make me appreciate even more our great life that God has blessed us with here in Australia.”

“ It has been a privilege and a joy teaching English to refugees, migrants and international students at HumeRidge and it has enabled me to use my God given abilities for God’s glory.”

Helping others become part of our fantastic Toowoomba community is something all of us can play a part in simply by seeking to build the bridges of communication and helping

“It’s easy for you as a Pastor you only work on Sunday right!”... Once again my friends have a laugh at my expense as we talk about life, work and family. For some, growing up in various churches, they know Pastors are on call 24/7 and do a range of things but others have no idea what my work life is like. And, in a church the size of HumeRidge, with most of the Pastors being involved in specific areas, what I do day to day is different from our Senior Pastor Dale, our Youth Pastor Ross, Pastor Neale who looks after the HumeRidge English Centre and so on. Yes, we care for people, provide assistance in times of need, teach about the Bible in various settings including Sundays, but there’s much more that goes on at HumeRidge than many people realise.

So, in the rest of TRANSFORMED this Edition I’m taking you on a journey to grab a glimpse of some of the things that happen around HumeRidge each week. This church building is a busy place, and this snapshot doesn’t include the community groups that use the facilities regularly for everything from classes to presentation nights, musicals to dance concerts, indoor bowling to basketball, and we can’t forget the valuable work of the Playgroup Association!

While I may talk about the members of

staff involved, please remember every group relies on, and is often run by, our incredible Volunteers. It is their commitment, dedication and resourcefulness that makes HumeRidge the fantastic place it is. We thank God for our Volunteers.

So, before we begin it’s good for me to have a special shout out to the cleaning teams and tech crews here every week doing what must be done behind the scenes, also our pastoral carers and hospital chaplains who visit those in need. You are amazing!

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone. We look forward to you joining us at HumeRidge in 2015!

PRAYER

At 8am and 4pm on Sundays, we join together before our services to pray for our church, community, events and special needs. We believe everything we do should be covered in fervent prayer as without Christ we can do nothing of eternal value. All are welcome to join us for prayer. Weekly prayer is also held at 6:30am Wednesday and the World Changers prayer for global missions is 6am Friday.

SUNDAY SERVICES

9am Sunday Morning people of all ages gather for an intentionally contemporary time of worship and teaching under the leadership of Senior Pastor Dale White. Each week we share communion together and on occasion celebrate baptisms, the dedication of children and have guest speakers. Our desire is to see lives transform to Christ as we experience God’s love together as part of His family.

During the teaching time we run age appropriate programs for children and youth from 12 months to Grade 12.

SUNDAY@5

These services offer a variety of expressions of worship as well as varying styles of presentations of teaching under the leadership of Youth Pastor Ross Savill. Services incorporate worship, Communion, meet and greet times, as well as teaching on relevant issues.

HumeRidge Kids and Youth Bible Study programs also run during the night service.
