- Dr. Judith Kravitz

By Lauren Chelec Cafritz

A landmark breathwork conference, The Breathwork Immersion: From Science to Sa-madhi, took place on September 15th at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. More than 100 teachers, scientists, psychiatrists, and social activists from around the world came together for a week to share their interest, passion and experience with the power of the breath and its potential for healing.

The range of speakers and breakout sessions covered the entire spectrum of breath-work practices, including Transformational Breath®, Integrative, Therapeutic, Holo-tropic, Buteyko, and Breath-Body-Mind. All conference speakers agreed that there are incredible benefits in conscious breathing, regardless of the type of breathwork practiced.

Jessica Dibb, conference organizer and founder and spiritual director of Inspiration Consciousness School, opened the conference with an invocation and breath prac-tice. Jessica is a co-director of the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance and a founding member of Ken Wilber’s Integral Institute. After introducing the other pre-senters, she spoke on “Breath & the Flowering of the Human Species,” putting in con-text the importance and variety of breathwork schools in our world today, saying “breath is the great unifying source and force”. She talked about how the benefits of breathwork can range from helping us lower our cortisol to taking us to the deepest part of our being – enlightenment. She encouraged us to become more skillful in the articulation and practice of breathwork to communicate to the world that breathing is our most powerful medicine for healing and nutrient for personal evolution.

It is long overdue that we profiled Senior Trainer R. Christian Minson and his healing expeditions into new areas of the world.

TBF: Christian, you have been instrumental in opening new areas of the world for Transfor-

mational Breath®. Describe a few countries that are on the radar.

CM: Yes, indeed! It is exciting for me as it is for the greater TBF organization. Transformational Breath has certainly become a global phenomenon, and I am excit-ed to be a player in the expansion of its reach. Some of the most interesting countries with which I have recent-ly shared the breathwork are Bulgaria and Russia. On the horizon, I am planning to hold seminars in Costa Rica and Panama in early 2014. Some places are un-charted territory (Bulgaria and Panama), others like Russia and Costa Rica had been tapped years ago and are now ripe for breathwork development.

TBF: You have had some talented figures helping with this.

CM: The one thing I have learned from forging a path as a TBF Senior Trainer is you can’t do it alone. Quality connections are of utmost importance. I was fortunate enough to meet Roumiana Tcholakova, a Bulgarian fa-cilitator-in-training this past spring at a Seminar in Delray, Florida where I was assisting Judith Kravitz. She is an enthusiastic up-and-coming player in the Transfor-mational Breath field with contacts in Bulgaria and Cos-ta Rica, where she lives part time throughout the year. Since the Spring she has already completed her Level 4 and Level 5 trainings. That kind of dedication is neces-sary to succeed in this field.

I have another business partner who has connected me with the world of Russians who are hungry for personal transformation. Her name is Dr. Olga Goldina, and she is a natural medical doctor originally from Siberia. She now lives in the San Diego area where we are collabo-rating on projects to reach people interested in natural health, vitality and maintaining their youthfulness in-definitely. She is a great networker and has an excellent reputation among the Russians we have visited and

served. That is critical in getting people who have never heard of breathwork to be willing to give it a try.

TBF: How do you find these people with which to partner?

CM: It really takes persistence and seizing an opportunity when it is presented to you. I look for people with enthusi-asm, drive, and a network of people they are in contact with, and then I feel out if a working collaboration is some-thing that would interest them. Sometimes (perhaps more often than not!) it takes a leap of faith at first. I have had a few collaborations I would rather forget, but for the most part they have been enriching to my personal development as well as profitable.

TBF: What do you feel are the greatest challenges to devel-oping our breathwork in new markets and cultures?

CM: The greatest challenge, in all honesty, is fear and per-sonal hesitation. There is this energy around doing some-thing new and untried that tends to create an imaginary barrier that stops many people in their tracks, and has cer-tainly slowed me down. Fortunately the work I do offers a solution for that!

Perhaps the next greatest challenge is the language barrier. Nothing happens without communication, and if you don’t know the language it is difficult to communicate. That is where partners who have the language skills have been so helpful. But even with translation abilities, it is a whole different mindset. You have to rethink how you are going to express concepts in the simplest language possible and you really have to slow down in order to allow for translation time.

TBF: What do you feel you have learned from these exotic experiences?

CM: If I have learned anything from venturing out into for-eign territories it is this: The need for breathwork is univer-sal. In fact, in areas of the world where there has been more struggle for the basics of modern living, the need is often greater. The difficult lives that people lead become incredibly transparent as soon as you observe their breath patterns. The good news is that integrating that energy through the Transformational Breath process is effective across all cultural and language barriers.

Dan Siegel, MD, Executive Director of the Mindsight Insti-tute, and clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, then spoke on “The Neuroscience of Breathing, Mindfulness, Con-sciousness & Transformation”. Dr. Siegel, a Harvard-trained physician, has authored many books on mindfulness, the brain and psychology, and addressed the importance and relevance of breathwork from his perspective as a scientist.

Judith Kravitz, Dr. of Metaphysics and Founder & Executive Director of The Transformational Breath Foundation led the

opening breakout session with Transformational Breath®. With 57 partici-pants, it was the most highly attended of all the conference breakout ses-sions. The experience of so many individuals breathing together was a truly powerful one, and

the energy in the room was palpable. The participants shared many breakthroughs and “aha” moments at the end of the session. Judith has been asked to return to the next Breathwork Immersion conference as a Keynote Speaker.

One of the most engaging breakout sessions was with Dr. Belissa Vranich who talked about “Creating the Perfect Breath by Engaging the Pelvic Floor”. She opened the ses-sion with the question: “Can you imagine a breath that does not get stuck anywhere?” She then moved the participants into breathing and pelvic floor exercises and had them con-sider the opposite of “fight and flight”, which is “rest and digest” and how to get to that state more often.

Another Keynote Session of note, "Therapeutic Breathwork & Body Themes: The Neuroscience & Integrative Approach to Six Major Breathing Patterns” was given by Jim Morn-ingstar, PhD. Jim is founder of the School of Integrative Psy-chology, and InWellness, and is co-director of the Global

Breathwork Training Alliance. He started the session by saying that “breath amplifies your gifts” and believes that the divine exists in each of us. Jim feels that to be a great breathworker, you need to combine conscious breathing with loving attention. Jim showed a training film of six breathwork sessions detailing release techniques for each of the structurally bound breathing patterns.

Other keynote speakers and their topics included Rich-ard Brown, MD and Patricia Gerbarg, MD: "Breath, Body, Movement & Emotional, Neural Regulation”, Gay Hendricks: “Breathing, Relationship & Relational Field”, and Jack Kornfield: “Samadhi, Enlightenment & Breath-ing”. All offered different ways of looking at the breath and its healing potential effects as well as the science behind it.

One of the highlights of the conference was the key-note address by 82-year-old Stanislav Grof, MD, a psy-chiatrist with more than 50 years of experience in re-search on non-ordinary states of consciousness. Dr. Grof, a professor of psychology at the California Insti-tute of Integral Studies, conducts professional training programs in Holotropic Breathwork and is an originator of the breathwork movement. His lecture, entitled "Revision & Re-Enchantment of Psychology: The Legacy From Half a Century of Consciousness Research” de-tailed the study of non-ordinary states of conscious-ness. He followed it up the next evening with a gripping slideshow of images drawn by breathwork participants called “Psychospiritual Death and Rebirth: Observations from Holotropic Breathwork and Psychedelic Therapy.”

Overall, the Breathwork Immersion Conference was an historic step in bringing the worlds of practice, research and education from major schools of breathwork to share and grow together in one location. The confer-ence truly brought into focus the importance of breath-work for healing and growth and helped heighten the visibility and acceptance of this significant practice. Jessica Dibb has shared with me that there are talks and planning underway for the next phase of this confer-ence and hopes to make an announcement soon for the next year or two.

Lauren Chelec Cafritz, TBF, IBF is the founder of ExperienceBreath.com. She is a DC-based professional Breathwork therapist who is passionate about help-ing people achieve optimal health, mental clarity and joy using the power of breath. In addition to her private

practice, Lauren leads classes and workshops at The Mindful-ness Center in Bethesda, MD and has conducted Breathwork retreats and workshops throughout the U.S.

TBF: You have taken a rather uncommon path to find your-self working with TBF. Tell us about that.

CM: Yes, I am proud to say that I had the unique experience of living the lifestyle for 10 years as a monk in a spiritual order prior to becoming a TBF Senior Trainer. That meant getting up every morning at 5:30am for personal medita-tion, then going to group meditation, having a period to study the spiritual texts after breakfast, and performing se-va, or service, in an administrative position within the or-ganization (even though we were monks, we were living in the modern age, so we embraced modern technology…though usually a few years behind the curve!). Every day at 4:30pm we were expected to get some kind of exercise to keep the body-temple running smoothly, and then we usu-ally had a class or some kind of evening program before our group and individual meditations that took us to bed by 10:30pm. Our diet was strictly vegetarian. Of course that is just the structural skeleton of the experience. The real val-ue was in being completely immersed and supported in an environment where the highest goal of life—realization of our oneness with all creation—was individually and collec-tively pursued.

I agree, it is a rather uncommon path for 99.99% of the world's population; and it is a path that I highly advocate for EVERYONE for a minimum of 2 years, ideally after high school and before entering college, or right after college.

TBF: How did that influence your decision to pursue a ca-reer in offering Transformational Breath to the world?

CM: There are a lot of similarities really. What I like best about Transformational Breath is that it is a spiritual self-healing technique. The first part of that is the “spiritual” part. I have come to define spiritual as anything that helps us expand our sense of who we are; anything that makes us grow out of our limited concept of what we are capable of accomplishing. As a monk we practiced meditation tech-niques for an average of 4 ½ hours each day in order to ex-pand our awareness. What I realized was that most of our techniques focused on the breath as the vehicle for access-ing the life-force energy that took us into these expanded states. Transformational Breath does the same thing, with the added benefit that there is no religious overlay to the access of Spirit. You can be a practitioner of any religion or not religious at all and still get the deep experience of con-nection with Spirit and expansion of consciousness.

However, where Transformational Breath really compli-ments meditation is in the emotional arena. From my many years of diligent practice of meditation I began to realize something important: the practice of meditation assumes that you are beginning from a space of mental and emotional equilibrium. If you are not in that space, you spend most, if not all of your meditation time, in processing random thoughts and feelings rather than focusing on inner expansion. I recognized that for my-self, and many of my fellow practitioners, we were NOT starting our meditations from this balanced place. When I was introduced to Transformational Breath, I saw how effective it was as a tool for integrating the discordant emotional and mental energies inside me, and how then it was much easier to sit in meditation and focus on the real purpose of the meditation prac-tice. I found that invaluable.

So when the time came that I was being “called” out of the ashram/monastery for the next phase in my per-sonal development, Transformational Breath had a number of inviting qualities that made it a natural fit: The idea that my life could still be in service to others, the understanding that Transformational Breath was inherently spiritual without being affiliated to any reli-gion, and that it was a great pre-technique for those who had a meditation practice, and an excellent medi-tation substitute for those who found it very difficult or even impossible to engage in formal meditation practic-es.

My experience as a monk has given me a unique posi-tion in the healing market not only as a TBF Senior Trainer, but also as a spiritual life consultant. I encour-age anyone who is interested to check out my website www.breathflow.com and/or to look me up on Face-book and “like” my page to keep up with what is going on with me.

TBF: You have co-authored a book. Here's your chance to plug it.

CM: Yes, as a former monk now in the business of holis-tic health and wellness, I was invited to participate in an anthology project with the focus on Conscious Business, or the merging of the capitalist ideals of free market entrepreneurship with the humanitarian ideals of a

higher conscious way of living. The project was called Align, Expand and Succeed: Shifting the Paradigm of Entrepreneur-ial Success. Thirty-nine other conscious entrepreneur au-thors and I each contributed a chapter where we outlined our own story and challenges at mastering the merging of business and consciousness, and then we each offer some practical applications for the reader who is ready to begin making this shift in their own life and business. What is great is that the more you get into the book the more you see how the principles are applicable to any aspect of your life, not just consciousness and business, but consciousness and intimate relationships, family life, personal develop-ment…you name it!

My chapter is titled Shift Happens: Inspiration for a Life in Transition. In it I outline the very rocky time in my life when I was confronted with the decision to leave or stay in the monastic order. To relate to your readers, it was like mak-ing a decision to get a divorce, quit your job, and move out of your hometown all in the same package. It was a life changing decision and I had to search deep for my most authentic motivations. In my chapter I illustrate a technique using breathwork that helped me to come to crystal clarity as to what my deepest motivation was that allowed me to step into a completely unknown new life with confidence and hope.

TBF: Where do you see Transformational Breath in five years? What can we achieve?

CM: I really see the integration of this technique into the mainstream applications of daily life. There are so many benefits that are derived from this technique on all levels of being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Clients have come to me primarily to move past emotional block-ages or for spiritual expansion, but even in these categories we have only scratched the surface. Emotionally, I would like to see Transformational Breath as a standard practice among Psychotherapists. As I see more and more business people coming into my practice I see the great need for the stress and anxiety-reducing benefits of Transformational Breath in the workplace. Mental creativity and problem solving are enhanced so it is a great technique in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other forms of mental degenera-tion. And I am still waiting for a star high-performance ath-lete to connect with my services, because I firmly believe

Q. A client is in the beginning stages of Bulimia. Her breathing is very shallow and she often stops breathing during the session. It looks as though she has "love is-sues" as well. She has a twin sister, and a third triplet had died during birth. I urged her to continue a breath-ing practice with us to address the emotions behind this. But how does one best proceed with such a pro-file? - Name Withheld

A. Bulimia (and Anorexia) have strong and identifiable social and emotional components behind them, and often such sufferers are stuck in talk therapy. And from the birth description above, there might be a sort of "survivor guilt" behind this to where I would expect that, in addition to shallow breathing, the lower belly was cut off (i.e. no movement in the lower chakras).

Case Study: An overweight girl had to deal with the pain of being the "fat girl". She addressed it with what ap-peared to be diet/exercise. For a time she looked won-derful and everyone was proud of her until she went too far and got too thin. Finally, she had a breakdown and they all found out she was purging in addition to not eating. In addition to addressing malnutrition, and potential esophageal erosion, a sensible approach would tackle the emotional patterns beneath with more than "talk therapy".

In Transformational Breath we teach about "Healing from Source". While this girl did shift something on the emotional/mental level, it was not a healing, because that level manifests from a higher level (Source). Noth-ing was really integrated with her. It seemed like one addiction (food) was traded for another obsession (starvation) in pursuit of that "thin ideal".

For such cases I recommend the following in a facilitat-ed breath practice: 1) If the person is in a weakened state (which is likely), start sessions lightly, not aggres-sively. 2) Concentrate first upon the belly, especially below the navel. Recognize any "Source Urge" with the case, and apply appropriate body mapping and affirma-tions. 3) Move to develop proper flow with her so that over time, the sessions can become more vigorous.

In May, Andria Falk of TBF-UK traveled to Kenya to help TIBA with organization. After a successful appeal for TIBA's Abundance School where games and books were donated by UK donors for the children, and a workshop for The Heshima Girl's Project, to rescue and provide care to wom-en and their babies traumatized by being trafficked into Nairobi from war zones such as Rwanda and Somalia, we again turn attention to the continuing challenge of HIV/AIDs that TIBA is so dedicated to helping.

HIV and AIDS exposes innocent souls to hardship here in Kenya. So many children are orphaned and families broken up. We've seen beautiful and powerful souls end their lives here on earth. It’s so painful, sorrowful, and worrying for dependents left behind. Many people see AIDS as a death sentence. People become disoriented mentally when they learn they are HIV positive or their providers are. Some chil-dren are unable to get basic needs like education. We think constantly what can we do for those affected and infected?

Help us create a state where they can design their future, restore their joy from within, overwrite the fear of death

with the urge to see a colourful tomorrow. ●

Gene Transfer. Do you follow the debate over GMO Foods safety? They are safe according to industry (Monsanto et al.) but an interesting paper came this May from a former GMO-spokesman. Canadian scientist Dr. Thierry Vrain claims GMOs are not only unsafe but much more deadly and insidious than we ever knew.

You've read of the food allergy and cross-contamination concerns between GMO and non-GMO food crops. Weeds also take up genes that confer herbicide-resistance or insecticidal properties. You create super-weeds in much the same way as "superbugs" are creat-ed by antibiotics overuse. Speaking of bugs, the genes also transfer to bacteria; an ampicillin-resistance gene was found to have transferred into soil bacteria from GMO crops. And what about our water supplies?

Now, Dr. Vrain says he has evidence that these re-sistance genes pass into humans where, for instance, ingestion of GM soy may contaminate our intestinal flo-ra. More superbugs? Read this 120 page GMO Report from Earth Open Source and draw your own conclusion.

that the technique of Transformational Breath has the power to enhance our physical prowess on all levels: more strength, endurance, and agility…you name it. So to answer the question, in five years I see Transforma-tional Breath as a common household name, used by a variety of people for a variety of reasons.

TBF: We know you as R. Christian Minson. Okay, tell us what the R stands for.

CM: Ah yes, the mysterious “R”…that has been the topic of much speculation! Some have taken it to mean “Reverend,” of which I am, by the way. But that is not the meaning. “Rockstar” is a response that seems fitting on some level and always gets a laugh. However, for the first time ever revealed in a public interview (and I think the first time it was ever asked), the “R” stands for my given birth name, Robert. I was named after my grand-father. The name also means “Famous” or “Bright Flame.” I only hope to live up to those meanings through my efforts to bring Transformational Breath to the world.
