  • UNIT 3 TEXTURE, TRANSFORMATION & METAMORPHOSIS

  • What is Texture?

Texture refers to surface characteristics and

appearance of an object given by the size, shape, density,

arrangement, proportion of its elementary parts. A texture is

usually described as smooth or rough, soft or hard, coarse

of fine, matt or glossy, and etc.

In these examples, if we could touch them, we

    could ACTUALLY FEEL the texture.

  • How is Texture defined in Art?

    Texture refers to the

    surface quality both

    real,invented or simulated in

    artwork.

  • PHYSICAL TEXTURE OR 3D TEXTURE

We can physically or actually experience this texture on this art work.

    concept or design.

The patterns or design on this hand do not

change the texture of surface (skin).

  • SIMULATED TEXTURE

Texture in an artwork that can be seen but not felt.

There is an illusion of real texture to the viewer.

  • DRAWING TEXTURE IN ART

The key to the illusion of texture is to show contrast of value (light & dark)repetition of line use of a variety of line (focus on the direction of the line)details (secret weapon) “pop-out” the highlights

  • DRAWING TEXTURE IN ART

Where are the elements of line, value and tone repeated?

The goal is not to duplicate the reference object. But to be inspired by the texture object. Focus on the direction of the lines.

  • By building on our knowledge of how to create lines with hatching, blending or stippling techniques, we can create texture.

To create value, think of where the lines are lines closest together? Where are they furthest apart? Look carefully at the dark/light areas.

Notice how the dark background contrasts with the light of the objects in the foreground.

Change the pressure of the line to create texture.

  • TEXTURE WARM-UP

The illusion of texture adds depth and dimension to your drawings.

Your task today is to create a "texture" hand. Each finger of your hand will have a different feeling to it! Create a variety of textures – 10 - 15 in total.

Finally, think about the placement of the hand what it's coming out of!!

Do this work in your Sketchbook PS. Yes, you may trace your hand. And yes, do both your left & right hand.

    point pen, pencil, felt-tip marker

DUE: TUESDAY FEBRUARY 21 @ the end of classHAND DRAWING

  • SUSTAINED PROJECT: TRANSFORMATION & METAPMORPHOSIS

For this project, students are expected to understand and

demonstrate simulated texture. Students will create a

metamorphosis or transformation drawing to show contrasting

textures. The student is evaluated on their demonstration of

understanding the concept, creating a dynamic composition and applying the elements of principles of design,

specifically, line and value to show simulated texture.

  • APPROACH ONE: METAMORPHOSIS

Metamorphosis in art is the harmonious fit of one object into a similar shape so as to create a new hybrid object.

  • METAMORPHOSIS Google Images

Choose two objects that are similar in shape but have unlike textures.

  • METAMORPHOSIS Google Images

Directly change/blend one object into the other to show a change or a metamorphosis, and to create a new hybrid.

  • APPROACH TWO: TRANSFORMATION

Transformation means to change the form, appearance, nature or character of an object.

  • Google Images

Using a minimum of five stage-step, transform one object to the other.

Choose two objects that are similar in shape but opposite in texture.

  • TRANSFORMATION

Each stage is something completely different.

    First object is “real”

Objects in the series are a mash-up or hybrid of first & last object.

    Last object is “real”

  • TRANSFORMATION

    TRANSFORM

    Google Images

Consider the composition. How did this artist use the size and perspective of each object to hold the viewer’s attention?

  • TRANSFORMATION

Each stage of your drawing should be a minimum of 8-

    10 cm in length.

How did this artist use the characteristics of each item to create a dynamic composition?

    THINK OPPOSITES

    TREE INTO A TELEPHONE POLE

IPHONE INTO A ROCK & CHISEL

    BIG TO SMALL

    BUTTON INTO SPORTS CAR

    SKYSCRAPER INTO CANDY BAR

    OBJECTS MUST HAVE UNLIKE TEXTURES

  • STEP 1 : EXPLORINGUNDERSTANDBrainstorm ideas – Think of objects and their textures. –draw a series of texture studies

Choose two objects that have UNLIKE textures: prickly-smooth; bumpy-smooth; slimy-rough. (Make a word web).

Choose either a transformation or a metamorphosis approach.

    rough

    smooth

    feathery

    prickly

    hairy

    grainy

  • STEP 1 : EXPLORING

THINKHow can these two objects be transformed or metamorphosized?

Draw 3 – 4 thumbnail sketches to work out your ideas.

Consider the composition –make it dynamic and engaging.

  • STEP 2 : APPLY

    1. After gathering your resources and choosing your best idea, begin drawing it on a sheet of paper of 22” x26”.

    2. Choose your materials – you can use pencil, felt-tip ink or coloured pencils.

    3. Show contrast/value. Areas of extreme black & white will help to show simulated or the illusion of texture.

    4. Use shading, hatching and other value techniques to show the illusion of texture.

  • OTHER & MATERIALS

You may draw an object from observation or use a photograph as a reference.

Do not copy an existing drawing metamorphosis from the internet.

A project that is copied will not be accepted.
