7 Cloud Myths and Realities About its Costs
Cloud definition:
“New model for providing business & technology services, which
allows user to access a catalog of standardized services, prepared
for all business needs (including unpredictable workloads), in a
flexible and adaptive way and paying only for consumption
made”

1) Standard Services -> Allows self-provisioning
2) Elasticity for scale up or down capacity
3) Pay per use (From CAPEX to OPEX)
New Paradigm, so new rules and Disruption!

Origin of Cloud: First came virtualization…
Many machines running over one (for efficiency) or an application
running over many machines for availability of service

Why should I use Cloud infrastructure?
Costs & complexity are grow and growing up. Companies should put money
and effort on their business, not in IT infrastructure

Provider SW in Cloud
7 Cloud Myths and Realities About its Costs
It’s clear that Cloud Provider is some kind of “boutique” where End-user buys

Myth 1: I don’t know where my data is…
It’s true for some Cloud Providers
That’s why Local Cloud providers are growing
faster…
But size matters: It’s a huge investment to build a
tier III or IV Datacenter (millions EUR), and software
development is more complex and expensive that
building a Datacenter..
Cloud now is based on global providers, but it will be local

Myth 2: Cloud is expensive…
Yes comparing VMs (virtual machines) against physical
ones.
BUT we should include ALL: security, power, refrigeration,
risks, IT department time & resources, headaches, etc.
Important: Cloud reduces complexity because of
standardization. Cloud allows to work with standard
“pieces”, like a LEGO.
Now we have another “LEGO” piece: CONTAINER. Before
Cloud, we had virtual machine concept prepared for
many applications. Now Container is intended to run a
single and specific application, in a very efficient way.
Cloud is NOT expensive if we don´t cheat ourselves with real numbers. And
remember: CAPEX -> OPEX

Myth 3: Cloud is insecure…
Definitely it’s false. The strength of a chain is given
by weakest link. And this is… Always human factor.
Who can manage better your data &
applications? Someone trained & up to date.
Cloud providers have the best technical staff of
the world, it’s their job!
Another interesting issue is the legality problem:
Data is in the EU or outside?
Remember: a Cloud Provider has more resources that any company…

Myth 4: Cloud has no SLA’s…
Cloud providers are Service companies. So they
have SLA on their contracts and addendums.
Important: Concept of performance:
SLA is crucial. Ask for that to your provider.

Myth 5: Cloud is not for mission critical applications…
It’s true it started as test & development environment,
for non business critical apps, startups, ecommerce,
etc.
But now, situation is completely different. Thousands of
companies have their ERPs on cloud, all kind of
companies relies on cloud for their operations: Mango,
Netflix, Apple, BBVA, Tesco Bank, etc.
In Cloud we have all kind of business…

Myth 6: impossible to upload huge quantities of data…
And it was. Upload 1TB to cloud using your internet
connection was almost impossible. But not now…
Solutions:
Solutions like “Snowball”.
Local Cloud Providers.
Now is possible, but with a plan and great support

Myth 7: We don’t rely on Cloud at all…
Some tier-IV datacenters, prepared for the worst disasters:
We have excellent infrastructures, design & managed for hosting any kind of
applications, no matter of their criticity
