ORIENTATION DETAILS

TRANSFER & NON-TRADITIONAL Schedule

8-9:15 AM STUDENT, PARENT & FAMILY MEMBER CHECK-IN (JSAC Ballroom): When you arrive on campus, your first step will be to check in with the orientation team. If you have not yet made your orientation payment, please do so at this time. Additionally, Academic Admissions will be available to assist with any documents you may still need to provide. If you are staying overnight with us, please be prepared to check your luggage, pillow, and any other items you have brought for the next two days in our luggage checkroom.

8-9:30 AM WALK DOWN JAGUAR LANE & LIGHT CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST (Maxwell Theatre): There will be various offices, departments and resources represented in this open mingling fair for students, parents, family members, and supporters alike to enjoy and gain first hand information from our academic entities and student support services. Those in attendance will be available to answer any questions about what they have to offer and provide more information about how to further get involved. A light continental breakfast is provided as part of our opening as well.

9:30-10:15 AM WELCOME TO GEORGIA REGENTS UNIVERSITY (Maxwell Theatre): Students, parents, family members and supporters will be welcomed to the university by members of our university administration and orientation staff. There will be an overview of the events for the next two days, concluding with a special welcome from the 2015 Orientation Leader student staff.

10:15 AM STUDENT Departure: Students will leave the parents, family members, and supporters to attend their first small group meeting. Only students are to leave for small groups.

10:15-11 AM Open Arms: Small Group Meeting 1 (Various Locations): Members of your student orientation staff will meet with you in a small group. Assignments are on your nametag. Your leader will get the group excited about your next two days, lead a review of the orientation schedule, and discuss other important elements as part of your transition to Georgia Regents University.*Session is MANDATORY. Your leader will be taking attendance.

10:15-10:30 AM PARENT & FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM OVERVIEW: I’ll Be Alright Without You (Maxwell Theatre): An administrator from the Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs will review the orientation schedule in depth and answer any questions your parents, family members, and supporters may have. We hope this will provide more comfort about our processes and what you and your students will be doing throughout the next two days.

10:30-11 AM UNDERSTANDING YOUR STUDENTS’ JOURNEY: Is It Really Time to go Our Separate Ways? (Maxwell Theatre): Learn about the academic and social expectations that the GRU community has for your students. This session provides you with beneficial advice on helping not only your student make a successful tradition to college life, but also assists in ensuring you have an educated journey as a parent, family member, and supporter.

11:10-11:40 AM It’s All Too Much: Financial Aid, Bursar & HCCU (Maxwell Theatre): This session will provide you with valuable information in regards to financial aid, scholarships, loans, tuition, fees, and accounts available through our on-campus credit union. Those speaking include the Office of Student Financial Aid, the Bursar Business Office, and the Health Center Credit Union.

11:45 AM-12:15 PM *ONLY Student, Parents, Family Members & Supporters of Small Groups: Safari, Flight, Trek & Voyage

1-1:30 PM ACADEMIC COLLEGE MEETINGS (See Back of Program): This is your opportunity to meet with representatives from your academic college. During this time, you will be able to discuss the types of courses you need for your degree, the hours and credits it takes to graduate or be admitted to further degree programs, and the special features of your academic colleges that sets them apart from the rest.

1:35-2 PM It’s NOT Just The Same Way (JSAC Ballroom): Academic Advisement has implemented new travel guides to help navigate the academic pathway at GRU. Career Services provides career and professional development resources to complement that trail. Students must walk their own paths but these two offices are important partners in the journey to success.*Session is MANDATORY. Your leader will be taking attendance.

2-2:30 PM Being a Responsible Jaguar (JSAC Ballroom): During this session, representatives from various departments will discuss the expectations of student behavior, the realities of college life, and how alcohol, drugs, and relationship violence affect the GRU family. We want our students to make appropriate choices and reduce harmful outcomes. This session intends to inform you about your rights and responsibilities as a college student and also provide you with valuable information regarding additional resources that are available to GRU students. Additionally, we hope this will spark a healthy conversation between students and their parents, family members, and supporters prior to starting the full-time journey into college.*Session is MANDATORY. Your leader will be taking attendance.

2:30-2:55 PM I CHOSE... GRU (JSAC Ballroom): The “I Chose Campaign” is a new initiative the university adopted to connect students to the Georgia Regents University institution and community. The 2015 Orientation Leaders believe that coming to college is one of the largest milestones someone can face. It is a process that provides education, growth, and change in all students who fully immerse themselves in the collegiate experience. College is a journey that you chose to start here at GRU. This journey starts here, at orientation. During this session, the 2015 Orientation Leaders will express why choosing GRU is the best decision they made, what they value from this special experience, and why it should be important to you. *Session is MANDATORY. Your leader will be taking attendance.

2:30-2:55 PM Wheel in the Sky: Parking, Food, Books & JagCard’s AUXILIARY SERVICES (University Hall 170): Life at GRU is exciting and engaging. Learn about the pieces needed for a student’s survival while starting their journey at Georgia Regents University. Learn about everything from parking and transportation, to purchasing textbooks or lab materials. Of course, students need to eat, too. Learn what our meal plans encompass, how you purchase them and then how the JagCard provides access to everything on campus.

3-4 PM *ONLY Student Small Groups: Trip, Expedition, Odyssey & Scavenger

Be Good to Yourself: Desire 2 Learn (Galloway Hall): During this session students will confirm all technical aspects of changing passwords, logging-in are complete, followed by the introduction to the Jaguar Nation Welcome Desire 2 Learn Module. This is an important resource that will show students how to access various materials online. The student orientation staff will also go over other information including the navigation of all JagNet components to be a successful student, including JagMail, Desire to Learn, POUNCE, Career Link, and Jaguar Community.

During this extremely popular session, Career Services will use an interactive activity to introduce you to yourself and show who’s running the zoo.*Session is MANDATORY. Your leader will be taking attendance.

CAMPUS NETWORKING SESSIONS: There will be various campus entities offering sessions about what they have to offer. There are four different sessions you can go to. Be sure to select them according to what is most important and beneficial to you and your student. Depending on your student’s group, they may be able to attend one with you, but many will need to be attended by yourself. 3-3:25 PM CAMPUS NETWORKING SESSION A:

CAMPUS RECREATION: Intramurals & Wellness (JSAC Butler Meeting Room): Enjoy being active? Come to this session and learn about Campus Recreation & Wellness! This includes everything from intramural and extramural activities, to the various club sports teams we have here at GRU. Not into competitive sports, but enjoy fitness? We have that, too! Learn about the newly remodeled Wellness Center and the Group Exercise options.

Journey to the Center of REESE LIBRARY (Reese Library Entrance): After a brief introduction to the mysterious land of Reese Library by one of the library keepers, join a group of fellow adventurers to explore this curious realm. Groups of explorers will use clues placed throughout the library to get ever closer to the treasure. Members of the group that finds the most clues will win prizes!

3:30-3:55 PM CAMPUS NETWORKING SESSION B:

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION at GRU (JSAC Hardy Meeting Room): The presentation will assist in developing an understanding of GRU’s interest in diversity and inclusion on our campus. Information will be provided on programs, workshops, celebrations and training offered by the university community including student led interactions which are instrumental in assisting all students in preparation for work in a diverse society. MILITARY & VETERANS SERVICES (Military & Veterans Services Office, 2nd Floor Washington Hall): The Office of Military & Veterans Services provides certification of VA educational benefits, facilitates Tuition Assistance, and administers Health Professions Scholarships for military/veteran students. In addition to these services, we offer a Military Resource Center (MRC) with a lounge, group study/meeting room, and small computer lab and library. Any military-affiliated student can use the MRC.

Research: It’s for YOU! (JSAC Hardy Meeting Room): Come learn about the various opportunities to conduct undergraduate research at GRU. Opportunities are available in all majors and disciplines!

STUDENTS GOING GLOBAL: Study Abroad (JSAC Coffeehouse): Join us for a review of some basic Study Abroad and Away information. We will go over how these programs work at GRU. We will also discuss fundraising and scholarship opportunities to help assist our students pay for their programs. We will allow time to answer any specific questions you might have!

4:30-4:55 PM CAMPUS NETWORKING SESSION D:

MILITARY & VETERANS SERVICES (Military & Veterans Services Office, 2nd Floor Washington Hall): The Office of Military & Veterans Services provides certification of VA educational benefits, facilitates Tuition Assistance, and administers Health Professions Scholarships for military/veteran students. A university’s traditions are specific events in history which make that university’s experience unique, individual, sacred. The Georgia Regents

University orientation team believes that having this unique experience is beneficial to the development of our

students. These events, locations, and actions aid in acclimating our students to our university, our community, our family. Join in our
