Reed: It’svery,verycommonandit’ssomethingthat’sgoingtoadapttoyourenvironmentandsotypicallytheadaptationistoslowdownmetabolism.Ifthebodythinksit’sunderstressanditis,godforbid,who’sisn’t,thebodyisgoingtowanttogointohibernationtosomeextent.Sincethyroidregulatesmetabolism,it’sveryeasyforthethyroidtoadaptively,naturally,andslowdownabitwhichasyouknowthemoreandmorethatprogresses,you’regoingtoendupbeingcalledhypothyroid,yourunderactivethyroidandreallyitcouldjustbeanadaptation.

Now,I’vestudieditprettythoroughlyallthethingsitcaninfect,anykindofendocrineoutputbutespeciallythyroid,becauseasyoujustmentioned,itissocommon.Imean,there’smillionsofpeopleonthyroidmedicationandIwouldventuretosay,andthisisjustbasedonmyownexperience,about80%ofthem,there’snothingwrongwiththeirthyroid.

Reed: Myopinionisthattheirdiagnoseishypothyroidbecausetheonlytesteverrunisathyroidhormonetest.Ifyourthyroidisalittlelow,that’sgoingtoshowuponbloodworkandthetypicalstandardmedicineapproachistojustlet’sbeefitupalittlebit.Here’ssomethyroidhormone.Myquestionandthequestionofyourfollowersaswellasmineisthatwhat’swrongwiththethyroid?WhyamIhypothyroid?

Now,15yearsago,whenIwasstartingthestudyofthisstuff,Iwenttoaphysicianandsaidifsomeone’sthyroidislow,istheresomethingtheycandoaboutthat.No,theyjustneedmedicationfortherestoftheirlifeandofcourseyou,DaveandIwouldnotacceptthatandwe’dgo,“No,Iwanttofindoutwhat’sreallywrongwiththethyroid.”I’vespentadecade-and-a-halflookingintothingslikethyroiddysfunctionandwhat’sreallywrong.ItgetsquitecomplexbutI’mhappytogowhereveryouwanttogowiththat.

Dave: BulletproofRadioisaboutperformingwell.There’sabiggroupofpeoplewhoknowtheyhavealittlesomethingwrong.Maybetheyknowtheyhaveabigsomethingwrongandthere’sanothergroupofpeoplewhosay,I’mprettymuchkickingassalldaybutIwanttokickmoreass.It’sjustthethyroid’sroleinthebodyisbasicallyanenergythermostat.IttellsthebodytoproduceenergyandofcourseI’mgeneralizingbutitseemslikehackingthethyroidfunctionsothatitisexactlywhereyouwantittobewhethertobringituptonormalorifitsnormaltomakesurethatit’seithergoingtostaynormalorevenmaybegiveyoualittlebitofextraenergyattherighttimes.Whatarethebigleverstocontrolthethyroidsothatyourbodywilldowhatyouwantittodo?

Reed: That’sareallygreatquestion.Asyousaid,thethyroidregulatesmetabolismsoitcanturnthethermostatupabitasyousaidwhenneeded.Whennotneededorwhenthebodyperceivesthatitshouldslowdownmetabolism,toconserveenergyandresources,whathaveyou,itwilldothat.Again,Ithinkit’sanadaptiveresponsetotheamountofstressthatwe’reunder.

Now,thesedifferentstressors,Icallthem,you’lllovethisphrase,contributorstoMetabolicChaos.Whenit’ssubjectedtostress,itstartstobreakdownaninfinitenumberofwaysanditwilleventuallycreate

chaoticmetabolism.Icallitmetabolicchaos.Now,thyroidobviouslyisgoingtobehighlyinvolvedinitbutthethyroidisjustoneglandandisbeingsentmessagesfromotherglandssuchasthepituitaryandhypothalamus.

Thehierarchywehavethishypothalamus,wehavethispituitaryandthenwehavethethyroidwhichisgoingtoproducesomethyroidhormonewhichisgoingtobeboundupfirstsotheycantravelthroughoutthebodyandbeusedlateratthecorrecttimeandcorrectreceptorsandthings.Italsohastobeconvertedbecauseasyouknowthisisbasicphysiology,thyroidhormonehastobeconvertedfromT4toactiveT3.

Now,thattakesplaceintheliver.Now,onceit’sconvertedtoausableformandhopefullynotintotheunusableforms,it’sgoingtogoonandbeusedbythecells.There’ssomeotherelementsinthereusedbythecells.Itcanbedisruptedandinthecourseexcessthyroidneedstobeclearedsowe’rebacktotheliverandclearing.

Now,Ijustmentioned7differentwaysthatathyroidcanbechaotic.There’sthismetabolicchaosgoingon.Startwiththathypothalamus.Thatthensendsoutamessagetothepituitaryandthatpituitarysendsoutamessagetothethyroid.Hey,regulatemetabolismthyroid.Thehypothalamusisinfluencedbyneurotransmitters,theimmunesystem,theautonomicnervoussystem,otherhormonesinthebody.Ifthosearealsorespondingorchaoticinsomeway,you’regoingtohavemixmessagesatbestfromthehypothalamus.YougetthechainofeventsI’mgoingthroughhere.

Dave: Justtopulloneofthosethingsout,theautonomicnervoussystem.Thefightorflightmechanismsinthebody.Thatcontrolsthehypothalamuswhichcontrolsthepituitary,whichcontrolsthethyroid.

Reed: Itcontrolsthethyroidandlotofotherorgans.

Dave: Manyotherslikeprohormone,oxytocin.Alotofthesethingsthatarefundamentaltostayingstrongandtostayingyoungarecontrolledbythiscomplexpathway.Ifyou’rebasicallystressedallthetime,you’re

Thenyou’velostcontrol.Asbiohackers,aspeoplewanttogaincontrolofthesystem,howdoyouknowatwhatlevelofthatsystemtointervene.There’snutritionalandenvironmentalimpactsandstressimpactsatthetopofthechainandthroughoutthechainoritmayjustbeyourhypothalamusisjackedoryourpituitaryglandisjackedbecauseyou’reimmunesystemisattackingitoryourthyroidmayhaveanautoimmunereactionlikeIsabellaWiensistalkedaboutontheshow.There’sallthisdifferentthings.Howwouldameremortalsitdownandsayallright.IwantthisstufftoworkandIwanttoreallywell.Iwantaprofessionalracecargradechainofthingsthatsupportmythyroid.Wheredoyoustart?

Reed: Greatquestion.Thethingtorealizefirstisthewayyouthinkaboutthis.Youhavetostartwiththefactthatyoujustsingleoutthethyroidandtreatthethyroid,youwillnotperformaswellassomeonewhousesallthegeneralprinciplesofhealthbuilding.Markmywordshere.Generalprinciplesdoesoutperformspecifictreatments.
