Reed: Myopinionisthattheirdiagnoseishypothyroidbecausetheonlytesteverrunisathyroidhormonetest.Ifyourthyroidisalittlelow,that’sgoingtoshowuponbloodworkandthetypicalstandardmedicineapproachistojustlet’sbeefitupalittlebit.Here’ssomethyroidhormone.Myquestionandthequestionofyourfollowersaswellasmineisthatwhat’swrongwiththethyroid?WhyamIhypothyroid?
Now,15yearsago,whenIwasstartingthestudyofthisstuff,Iwenttoaphysicianandsaidifsomeone’sthyroidislow,istheresomethingtheycandoaboutthat.No,theyjustneedmedicationfortherestoftheirlifeandofcourseyou,DaveandIwouldnotacceptthatandwe’dgo,“No,Iwanttofindoutwhat’sreallywrongwiththethyroid.”I’vespentadecade-and-a-halflookingintothingslikethyroiddysfunctionandwhat’sreallywrong.ItgetsquitecomplexbutI’mhappytogowhereveryouwanttogowiththat.

Reed: That’sareallygreatquestion.Asyousaid,thethyroidregulatesmetabolismsoitcanturnthethermostatupabitasyousaidwhenneeded.Whennotneededorwhenthebodyperceivesthatitshouldslowdownmetabolism,toconserveenergyandresources,whathaveyou,itwilldothat.Again,Ithinkit’sanadaptiveresponsetotheamountofstressthatwe’reunder.

chaoticmetabolism.Icallitmetabolicchaos.Now,thyroidobviouslyisgoingtobehighlyinvolvedinitbutthethyroidisjustoneglandandisbeingsentmessagesfromotherglandssuchasthepituitaryandhypothalamus.
Thehierarchywehavethishypothalamus,wehavethispituitaryandthenwehavethethyroidwhichisgoingtoproducesomethyroidhormonewhichisgoingtobeboundupfirstsotheycantravelthroughoutthebodyandbeusedlateratthecorrecttimeandcorrectreceptorsandthings.Italsohastobeconvertedbecauseasyouknowthisisbasicphysiology,thyroidhormonehastobeconvertedfromT4toactiveT3.
Now,thattakesplaceintheliver.Now,onceit’sconvertedtoausableformandhopefullynotintotheunusableforms,it’sgoingtogoonandbeusedbythecells.There’ssomeotherelementsinthereusedbythecells.Itcanbedisruptedandinthecourseexcessthyroidneedstobeclearedsowe’rebacktotheliverandclearing.
Now,Ijustmentioned7differentwaysthatathyroidcanbechaotic.There’sthismetabolicchaosgoingon.Startwiththathypothalamus.Thatthensendsoutamessagetothepituitaryandthatpituitarysendsoutamessagetothethyroid.Hey,regulatemetabolismthyroid.Thehypothalamusisinfluencedbyneurotransmitters,theimmunesystem,theautonomicnervoussystem,otherhormonesinthebody.Ifthosearealsorespondingorchaoticinsomeway,you’regoingtohavemixmessagesatbestfromthehypothalamus.YougetthechainofeventsI’mgoingthroughhere.
Dave: Justtopulloneofthosethingsout,theautonomicnervoussystem.Thefightorflightmechanismsinthebody.Thatcontrolsthehypothalamuswhichcontrolsthepituitary,whichcontrolsthethyroid.

Thenyou’velostcontrol.Asbiohackers,aspeoplewanttogaincontrolofthesystem,howdoyouknowatwhatlevelofthatsystemtointervene.There’snutritionalandenvironmentalimpactsandstressimpactsatthetopofthechainandthroughoutthechainoritmayjustbeyourhypothalamusisjackedoryourpituitaryglandisjackedbecauseyou’reimmunesystemisattackingitoryourthyroidmayhaveanautoimmunereactionlikeIsabellaWiensistalkedaboutontheshow.There’sallthisdifferentthings.Howwouldameremortalsitdownandsayallright.IwantthisstufftoworkandIwanttoreallywell.Iwantaprofessionalracecargradechainofthingsthatsupportmythyroid.Wheredoyoustart?
Reed: Greatquestion.Thethingtorealizefirstisthewayyouthinkaboutthis.Youhavetostartwiththefactthatyoujustsingleoutthethyroidandtreatthethyroid,youwillnotperformaswellassomeonewhousesallthegeneralprinciplesofhealthbuilding.Markmywordshere.Generalprinciplesdoesoutperformspecifictreatments.

There’s1through5.Yougradeeachthing.Now,thosethingsareconnectedinfunctionalcategories.Wehavetheinnerconsistentquestions.There’stheneuronalconductivityquestions.There’squestionsrelatedtotheimmunesystem,glucosemodulation.There’squestionsrelatedtocarbohydratemetabolism.Fatandproteinmetabolism,connectedtissueandboneturnover.
We’veovertheyearsdevelopedasystemofquestionsandthatcangiveyouascore.Ittellsyouwhatyourscoreis.Itneedsareaanditpointsthefinger.Now,it’snotdiagnosticbutitpointsthefingerinanareathatneedsimprovementliketheendocrinesystemforinstance.Wealwayskeepinmindwillthatendocrinesystemisgoingtobedysfunctional.Itmightbereallycriticallydysfunctionalbutthere’salltheseothersystemsalsoinfluencedat.
