UNITED STATESOF THE

TRANSCONTINENTAL

TRAILS

In 1926, before numbered highways, there

were National Trails and other posted roads.

Trails had official pole markings posted

along the routes, such as Dixie-Overland

Highways (DOH), now US 80 and I-20.

In recent years, historic US highways in

several states have been designated state

highways, influenced by the speed oriented

interstates. On US 80 for example, in historic

Van Horn, where the route comes off I-20,

the famous Main Street has been designated

as part of a Business I-20 loop. US 80 from

Dallas to Ft. Worth Texas is now Texas 180.

US 75 (I-45) from Dallas to Houston is now

Texas 75. US 67 and US 90 are still pretty

much intact.

Route 66 architect Tom Snyder observed

that traveling was more important than the

destination, being on the road was more

interesting than arriving: that the road is a

destination in itself.

DISCOVER OTHER “MOTHER ROADS” OF AMERICAThe mother roads of America are notonly the Lincoln Highway and Route66, but the great transcontinentalroutes of Route 80 and 90, original-ly called the Dixie Over Land and theOld Spanish Trail highways. Allsouthbound highways such as Route67, the Bankhead Highway, andRoute 75, the Meredian Highway, feed into Routes 80 and 90 which runthrough a section rich in historicromance, observes Richard F.Weingroff of the Federal HighwayAdministration. Routes 80 and 90bind together all of the formerSpanish territories of the U. S., fromFlorida to California.

Now paralleled by interstates, in the1920s these were mostly dirt andgravel roads. US 90 had 40 miles offerries as it came across the southernstates on its way to California. It andUS 80 followed the routes of thewagon road surveys of the 1860’s.

Through these several routes, EastTexas is a part of the great sweep ofAmerican history.

Other early routes, each with theirown names, existin East Texas, allthe way down tolocal dirt roadswhich were pavedto become a part ofTexas farm to mar-ket roads. Theyare all a part of thescenic and historicbyways of EastTexas.

These roads are a

microcosm of America, and a greatway to connect with the land and itspeople, observes JoAnn Vervinck, alandscape architect. Along them youcan see the relics of another time, when there was “auto architecture.”

Enjoy a more leisurely drive, andobserve the historical and culturalrelics such as gas stations, touristcourts, diners, bridges. In East Texasyou see historical and cultural relicsin pioneer log cabins, tourist courtswith individual cottages like in theearly 30’s movies, to shotgun housesof the oil fields and bayous.

The Byways get you into the down-towns, on the Main Streets, andaround the courthouse squares.

Roads that carried wagon trains westfrom the port of Jefferson to build upcities like Dallas and the great ranch-es in West Texas have a romance oftheir own. Nostalgia exists in cafes, service stations and motels whichsurvive from earlier times. revivingmemories of past generations.

These routes arestill waiting forthose with a spiritto venture and aliking for friendlypeople and un-crowded, scenicroads. They'll begreat for fallfoliage and springflower jaunts, andjust to travel ondreamy summerdays.

Rivers slowed traffic along early trails and US highways.Therewere more than 40 miles of ferries on OST (US 90) in the1920’s. This 1928 photo shows a ferry and in the foreground abridge being constructed along an East Texas road.

When completed in 1932the Meredian Highway'sslogan was “From Pines toThe Palms” or from

Winnipeg, Canada to Galveston Island. Itenters our area at Durant, headquarters forthe Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, thenacross the Red River south. It traversesblackland prairie, pine forests, and ends onthe coastal prairie. Along the way it ties

together the state’s two largest metropolitanareas, with major attractions, and dozens ofinteresting smaller cities and some of theshrines of Texas and the space age on theway to the Gulf of Mexico. It goes throughgreat ranching country, passes near wherethe George Bush Library is a 15th centuryfestival, a full-sized paddlerwheeler, shop-ping, Greyhound racing, to the Strand andthe sailboats on the Gulf. “Drive 75.”

Red River Valley, through piney woods to the Golden Triangle on the Gulf Coast

US 69 begins in Albert Lea,Minnesota and ends in PortArthur, Texas. Passingthrough Choctaw country it

enters Texas at giant Lake Texoma, passesthrough Red River Valley towns, downthrough breadbasket blacklands to bakeriesand outlets and antique malls, into the pineywoods, with dogwoods, azaleas and rose-fields, and Civil War camps, to high look-

outs and Cherokee Indian history, and foot-bridges and Texas' antique railroad, to the ElCamino Real's highest town. Midway, ittravels on through national forests past aforest museum and great lakes to the BigThicket and its wild orchids, quaint villages, and canoeing streams. Irrigation channelslead to the rice fields, and to cities withmuseums and Cajun influence where theNeches and Sabine rivers run to the sea.

US 69

Albert Lea, Minnesota to Port Arthur, Texas

US 80, in the early 1900’sknown as the Dixie-Overland Highway, startsat Tybee Island near

Savannah, GA, on the Atlantic, and aftera scenic and exciting route across sevenstates ends at Mission Beach in SanDiego, CA on the Pacific. It was firstcalled “The Shortest and Only YearRound Ocean-to-Ocean Highway”. One

of its most interesting segments is fromShreveport to Dallas. You could drive itin three hours on I-20, but you wouldmiss Old South towns, antique capitals, the world’s largest trades day, rose gar-dens, a museum to the great East TexasOil Field, mysterious Caddo Lake withSpanish moss and cypress decor, hillsand yams and peaches, and tributes toJim Reeves and Tex Ritter.
