transcendental: works of impression

Dentistry is an art and a science — one of the oldest professions of the healing arts.

When we began planning our new home for the College of Dental Medicine with the help of our patient advisors, we envisioned a place of charm and beauty, warm and welcoming — an environment filled with a variety of wonderful art. We invited our dental colleagues and friends from all around the state to contribute. And the vision was accomplished! From bottom to top, there are more than 175 individual works of art on display in the public spaces of this building.

The exquisite mosaic chandelier immediately captures your attention upon entering the soaring three-story lobby. Created by internationally known Augusta artist Paul Pearman, the structure embodies the essence of the art so richly carried throughout the entire building. As Pearman’s most massive work, it is fittingly displayed in the College’s most prominent location, The Fisher Atrium, named in honor of benefactor Dr. Emile T. Fisher, who provided the College’s very first scholarship in 1968 and has assisted hundreds of dental students over the years through his heartfelt generosity.

This piece is just the beginning. We hope you’ll enjoy your journey through all five floors and see the painted, sculpted, woven, carved, blown, photographed and even welded artwork that was generously given to the school and graces the hallways and waiting areas.
