Teach your children well
From the principal Hi everyone – Well this is it! The last amazing newsletter from your fantastic school!
Communication Extraordinaire!
This is the last newsletter form TCS for 2016 and we all wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe
holiday. We have had a great year at TCS improving and refining how we communicate to our community. We have
Mrs Sharyn Brown to thank for this improvement and I would like to acknowledge her enthusiasm and initiative. The
creativity and flair that she has brought to this role has really enhanced the image that we can portray and our
community can get a real feel for all the wonderful activities that take place in our school. We can give you all a real
look through the window so that you can see inside.
A Learning and Responding Matrix (ALARM)
At the end of this year our school is planning for the implementation of ALARM in 2017. This is a strategy to develop
critical thinking, using a common language with Bloom’s Thinking Taxonomy as a basis. This strategy will ensure that
both students and teachers will work together to develop the capacity to not only list facts but also critically analyse
using this information. Analysis demands a much higher level of thinking than just remembering and repeating facts
and it is not a skill that comes without training. Our school will be developing this capacity, using ALARM from Year
6 upwards so that when students move into High School they have begun to develop not only an ability to analyse
what they learn, but they are also able to reflect on their own work. They will be able to identify for themselves not
only what level they are thinking at but also what they have to do to move up into a higher level.
Mr Wright and I did two days training earlier in the year so that we had a good understanding of the whole strategy.
The explanation the difference between what is ‘Googleable’ and what is NOT ‘Googleable’ made it very clear. I think
that we often get stuck in the world of Google and a world of finding solutions that cannot be found on Google is so
much more productive and necessary for our own personal and economic success in the future.
Our intention is that the implementation of ALARM will improve capacity, give stronger feedback and lead to higher
HSC results.
Leadership Skills
Yesterday I had the privilege of hearing our Year 5 students make speeches to persuade their classmates to vote for
them as 2017 School Captain. We heard eight excellent speeches, spoken confidently and clearly. What is even more
notable is that Year 5 is our smallest year and although we only have eleven in the year, only three students chose not
to speak. The quality and depth of our student leadership capacity is not only testimony to the standard of education at
our school but also to the supportive and accepting culture of our school, where it is safe to take a risk.
The results of the voting will be announced on Presentation day, and of course it is a secret, but I can say that the votes
were very evenly spread across all candidates which is also evidence of how well all our students are accepted by each
other. Congratulations Primary and congratulations Year 5. I could not be prouder.
Urban Challenge
This week, Mr Jones and Mrs Wilson have accompanied a group of Year 9, 10 and 11 students to Sydney for an Urban
Challenge. The students are in two teams, competing with each other. There are some of the most competitive students
I have ever met in the group so I would love to be a fly on the wall as they try and outdo each other. We are watching
their blog with great interest as they surf, cook, bury each other in sand and dance. They are solving problems using
clues as they go around the city, from Garden Island, to Manly, to Bondi, to the Rocks and then dinner in China Town.
I already have staff who have volunteered to pay for themselves so they can go next year, but SORRY, I’m the boss
and I say who is going – ME!
Finally ........
2016 has been a wonderful year. We have had so many successes and so much fun. Our numbers continue to grow and
we will have additional staff at our school to cover the extra classes. We have a strong and inclusive culture and we
intend to maintain our high expectations into the New Year. I hope that those very few students who find it difficult to
meet our expectations have a good rest and a serious think over the holidays.
All the best

Head Teachers’ Report As another year draws to a close I would like to thank all of the teaching and support staff that have dedicated their
energies into providing valuable and rewarding educational experiences for our students. Many hours of planning and
preparation go into the delivery of quality lessons and extracurricular activities to support the growth of every student.
Our staff participate in regular professional learning that will continue to enable them to deliver effective and
engaging content.
We look forward to seeing our students return safely from the summer holiday break. Students return to school on 6th
February 2017.
School Captains Election
Our candidates that have nominated to represent us as our School Captains will be presenting their nomination speech
on Monday morning, 12th December. Voting will follow shortly afterwards. The successful candidates will be
announced and presented with their badges at the Presentation Day assembly.
Presentation Day Assembly
Our Presentation Day assembly will be held in the school hall at 11.30am on Thursday 15th December 2016. All
parents, carers and community members are invited to come and celebrate the achievements of our students. A
sausage sizzle will follow and provide an opportunity to mix with family and friends of TCS.
Secondary Rewards Day
On Tuesday 13th December our Year Advisors will be acknowledging the students who have modelled positive
behaviours throughout the year with a ‘reward’. All eligible students will soon be provided with information
regarding this activity. Students, with a high number of ‘STARS’ entries will not be invited to attend. Any queries,
please contact the Principal or Deputy Principal.
Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday break.

Year 9/10 Textiles
The Year 9/10 Textiles students have turned their practical lessons this
semester into a quilters club. These very talented students have created a
range of quilt designs and although this is their first attempt at constructing
a quilt, the students are working towards the completion of their lovely projects.
Sista Speak Program
The Sista Speak program focuses on the building of resilience and developing
respect; both self respect and respect for others. As part of the program this
semester the girls have been developing personal skills to create, market and sell
the product. The girls have thoroughly
embraced these attributes, working as a team,
firstly to create the bags and earrings to sell and
last Friday they had a session in which they
created Christmas gifts (Cookies in a Jar).

Mid-Excursion Update
At the end of Day 3 of the Urban Challenge (at the time of writing), the
sixteen intrepid TCS students who are joining Mr Jones and me in Sydney
have been super-busy. We got in to Sydney Central at about 10pm,
having been delayed by signal failures at Bathurst, and after a quick
journey to the YHA at the Rocks and a short briefing, we were all in bed
for a good night’s sleep, ready for a big day ahead.
Using our Opal cards, and prompted by clues and riddles from the Game
Master sent to our team phones, we have walked, bussed, ferried and
trained our way around Circular Quay, Manly Beach, Collaroy, Garden
Island, Watsons Bay, Bondi Beach and Chinatown. In each of these
places we have found clues, taken ridiculous photos to earn points, had a
surfing lesson, swum at Bondi and had students prepare a MasterChef-
worthy meal for their teammates and the teachers.
The students have had to lead the way, with Kurt Terry and Morgan Gale at the helm as our two Team Leaders. Every
student has been allocated at least one job role, including navigator, communicator, welfare officer, treasurer,
photographer and journo. As well as the ever-vital teamwork skills, students have had to solve problems together, be
resilient in the face of challenges, and listen carefully to instructions in order to maximise their points and get the most
out of the program.
Our final day in Sydney will no doubt bring further adventures, and we certainly will be a tired –
but happy – bunch when we return home on Friday afternoon.

In the Preliminary course we study Ecosystems and the
interactions between living and non-living factors in
them. The Patterns in Nature module covers the structure
and function of cells, and how they obtain nutrients to
grow and repair themselves. The Life on Earth module
explores how life came to exist on Earth. We investigate
evolution from simple molecules to complex organisms,
and the conditions needed to support life here (and
elsewhere in the Universe!). The Evolution of Australian
Biota module focuses on the evolution and adaptations
of Australia’s unique animals as a result of isolation and
the influence of varied climatic conditions.
Biology is amazing!
VET Induction Day
Jock McLaurin
Yeoval
On Monday 21 November students studying Vocational Education and
Training courses in 2017 attended an induction day at Peak Hill Central
School. Students completed mandatory induction modules and registered
for work placement, met their course coordinators and created their
Unique Student Identification number. A delicious recess and lunch was
enjoyed, thanks to Ms Doyle and Ms Freeth. Thanks to all the staff who
capably supported the day by running sessions and driving students.
Western Student Connections attended the day as well as the Senior
Pathways Officer for this region. We thank them for taking the time to
assist our students.
Thanks to all the staff who contributed to this
essential and worthwhile event.

Last Newsletter Report for 2016
This year has been a very busy and successful one at TCS. Our students have all worked hard
to co-operate with each other, learn from each other and make progress with their school work.
Our Year 6 class this year was exceptional, both as school leaders and in setting the tone for
the Primary department. They are kind to each other, try hard with their school work, they
read, are keen to try new things and to take risks with their learning. We are very proud of
them and wish them all the best in Secondary studies. The Captains and Vice Captains have
each written a report that follows, summarising the highlights of 2016.
Hello ladies and gentleman we have prepared this report to inform you about what has been happening throughout this year on
the Primary side.
Firstly, our school has achieved many things such as making it to Dubbo for the Premiers Spelling Bee where we competed
against students from many other schools in our district. We have also taken part in the Public Speaking and the CWA poster
competition where we are given a country and we have to research the topic and make a factual poster.
We have also had many other curricular activities such as Corrective Reading, sight words and Multi Lit. This year we’ve had
many exciting excursions that have given kids the opportunity to explore new places and learn new things; our excursions have
been to Wambangalang , a Teddy Bear picnic, the zoo and the latest excursion to Canberra where all students displayed excellent
behaviour. We have also had students participate in the Moorambilla camp; that’s where students go to sing in a choir.
In Term 3 students from Years 2 to 6 were put into two teams for the Eisteddfod dance. Each group created a dance routine to
perform in Wellington. The senior team came 2nd in their division and the juniors came 2nd as well. There was also a K to 6
choir team accompanied by the Year 7’s singing a song dedicated to what they had been learning about in class. MADD Night
was another event that all classes participated in and all did superbly and we raised a lot of money. Every year our school has a
NAIDOC day celebration and we play traditional games and we learn many different things about the owners of this land the
Wiradjuri people.
As School Captains we would like to thank our teachers, parents and school friends. It has been a great year together and we
have enjoyed being Captains.
Stacey Stoneman and Kai Greenwood
What a busy and successful year we have had in sport. The aim of this report will be to share with you the main sport that went
on in 2016 for Trangie Central School on the primary side.
At the start of the year we held our school swimming carnival. Approximately 35 kids qualified for the Gobondery/NARRAF
swimming carnival held in Warren. Overall Trangie Central won the day and came home with the shield and Xanthe St Clair won
senior girls champion and Narelle Shillingsworth-Budd got senior girls runner up. We had 7 students make it away to the
Western Region carnival at Dubbo.
Also at the end of Term One we had our cross country and everybody had a big success and tried their best to finish their race!
About 30 kids made it away to the Gobondery/NARRAF cross country at Tullamore and we had 6 students make it away to the
Western Region carnival at Guerie.
Then in second term we had our Athletics Carnival and Widgeree won the day over all. There were about 40 kids going to
Gobondery/NARRAF Athletics in Dubbo Barden park.
Also 8 students went to Tottenham in early Term 4 to compete in the Gobondery/NARRAF tennis. They played doubles all day,
including mixed doubles. Thank you to Miss Druce for organizing that day.
In Term 3 we participated in the netball and touch football gala day.
Also in Term 2, Years Five and Six went to Dubbo to play in the Netball Schools Cup. Three teams went and all did incredibly
well. Team Trangie One was against the most competitive teams and came second overall. Team Trangie Two won all their
games and unfortunately cannot go away to Orange. Team Trangie Three won one game and they all tried their best.
What a great year. We think that if you love sport Trangie Central School is the place to be!

Jacky Murtagh PRIMARY Our school would not be such a happy, vibrant place without our lovely staff. Everyone works hard and works as a
team to try to offer great academic programs for the benefit of our students. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all of our staff and also you, the families, who support the school. When school and home work in partnership
the very best results are achieved for our children. So thanks!

Year 5 students took great pride in presenting their leadership speeches and actually
had some really good ideas for what changes they may try to make as leaders as well
as compelling reasons as to why they are the best candidates for the roles. Positions
will be announced at the Presentation Day assembly, Thursday 15th of December.
Good luck Year 5 students!

Summer Holidays
Summer holidays…....just because the
school year is over, doesn’t mean children
stop learning. Did you know that in one
school year a child spends around 7800
hours at home and about 900 hours at
school? Undoubtedly, the role of families
in a child’s educational achievement is
huge! So this summer have fun together, relax, read, talk,
write and play together. Keeping your child’s English skills
active over the break means they will return to school in 2017
a little bit more ready and able to learn.
On behalf of the staff we wish you all a
joyous and safe Summer holiday.

Jacky Murtagh PRIMARY This year has been an exciting journey especially in my new role as
Learning and Support Teacher and Learning and Support Coordinator.
Obviously I still enjoy my LOTE teaching and learning experiences
especially the enthusiasm of students. We all wish it was longer than 2
hours per week.
My role has been rewarding. The Trangie Central
School staff have been extremely supportive. We
have an amazing relationship with Marathon
Health. Their supportive and beneficial programs
include OT, Speech and Hearing Screening. Our
hearing screening results have been fantastic
with Marathon Health stating that our results are simply
awesome. This is due to our ‘Crunch and Sip ‘program and BBC program. Well done and let’s
continue bringing in fruit, vegetables and water.

To all the students who submitted EnviroWeek posters. They were amazing and
showed that our students have some creative and innovative ideas about how to
improve our school environment. The quality of the posters was very high which
made it difficult to judge ‘the best’, particularly among the Primary students.
A special thanks goes to
Bunnings Dubbo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo for
donating prizes towards this competition!
Winners Secondary:
Bonnee Morton (Year 9) won a family zoo pass.
Mackenzie Pardy (Year 7) won a zoo animal sponsorship
(Mackenzie has chosen to sponsor a Sumatran tiger).
Primary:
K/1D won a worm farm and worm starter kit. Students are already feeding the worms by putting
their lunch scraps in the worm farm.
1/2E won a garden composter. The composter is for garden waste like leaves and mown grass and
when it is fully composted it can go back onto the garden to help feed it and keep the water in.
6M will sponsor the Sumatran Tiger at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
The zoo sponsorships (adoptions) fund Taronga’s work
including research and education programs focusing on
endangered species in Australia and around the world, as
well as assisting with the conservation, breeding and
preservation of wild animals and their habitats.
Well done and thanks to everyone who participated!
