Introduction

Product Capabilities TRAK products have evolved to meet or exceed each new customer demand, which has resulted in a broad range ofcompact, robust, high performance devices.

Most housings for isolators or circulators are milled fromMartensitic stainless steel and are nickel-plated to providea stable, yet cosmetically pleasing finish. Other finishes such as silver or gold are optional. TRAK devices are assembledunder compression, which improves the rigidity andbenefits performance over wide temperature ranges. With no epoxies used internal to the microwave circuit, insertion losses are also optimised.

Contributing factors to the minimised size include the use of high dielectric rings around the circumference, rare earth magnets, steel, and in the case of the coaxial range, proprietary SMA connectors. The devices will operate overconsiderably wider temperature ranges, for example(-54 to +95 C). However, minor microwave performance degradation may be apparent.

All the devices offered are capable of commercial tocomplete military or space qualified standards includingshocks in excess of 150g, sinusoidal vibration in excess of25g peak from 10 - 2,000 Hz, and humidity. Each deviceoffers reliable performance over a wide temperature rangeoperating in harsh environments without compromise ofelectrical performance.

Our global defence customers rely on our capability and high volume capacity to produce parts for long-term phasedarray programs. TRAK has a Hi-Rel section devoted exclusively to military or space application programs and usesclean rooms, space approved epoxies, and other polymeric compounds. TRAK product families offer a balancebetween practicality and affordability, while optimising reliability and performance.

Integration by Design

TRAK Microwave’s general capability includes isolator and circulator custom-designed assemblies, multifunction assemblies, sources, and subsystems. In addition to our broad line of isolator andcirculator components, TRAK specialises in the design and manufacture of Integrated MicrowaveAssemblies (IMAs) for defence, space, and commercial applications.

Offering distinct advantages over multiple, interconnected and discrete functions, IMAs take advantage ofthe latest advances in performance and functionality to offer a form fit and function upgrade path fromexisting outdated technology. In doing so, IMAs also offer overall improved performance, reliability andare ideally suited to applications where electrical performance and mechanical constraints are often theprime considerations. TRAK integrated assemblies provide cost and time savings associated with theelimination of multiple interconnects and individual component testing.

Select-A-Frequency Instructions

If the electrical performance offered by our broadband models do not meet your minimum requirements and yourdesired model is not available in the Narrowband tables of Coaxial, Drop-in and MICpuck devices, then TRAK’sSelect-A-Frequency devices are available as a semi-custom alternative.

To determine which Select-A-Frequency device to order, follow the instructions below:

1. Select the table of Select-A-Frequency isolators or circulators in the appropriate topology (e.g. coaxial, drop-in).

2. Determine your operating centre frequency and operating percentage bandwidth (BW). Select the centre frequencyrange containing your operating centre frequency from the table’s first column. If your operating BW is equal to or less than that stated in the % BW column, then TRAK will guarantee the performance stated.

3. To order a Select-A-Frequency device, you must generate your own model number by replacing the "*" with the centre frequency code, which is created as follows.

a) The frequency code is the centre frequency in GHz, multiplied by 100. Drop any fractional values(no decimal places). Add leading zeros, if necessary, to make the frequency code four digits.

b) If counter-clockwise circulation is desired, add an "X" suffix to the model number. If clockwise is desired, add an ”N”.

Example: You need a coaxial circulator operating from 6.3 to 6.8 GHz. You cannot locate this model in the narrow-band tables. Referring to the Coaxial Select-A-Frequency table, you identify that the C6080/S*A covers the range inwhich your operating centre frequency (6.55 GHz) lies and your actual BW (7.7%) is considerably less than the 15%maximum that the C6080/S*A will operate over.

Having met your system demands, you generate the model number by replacing the "*" with the frequency code,6.55 GHz X 100 = 0655. The model number is C6080/S0655AN.

TRAK ships the device with a worst-case electrical performance of 23 dB minimum isolation, 0.50 dB maximum inser-tion loss, 1.20:1 maximum VSWR, power handling of 500 W peak, 65 W average, guaranteed over –25 to +85 C.

Basic Theory

Circulators and isolators provide non-reciprocal transmission paths. In other words, microwave energy may travelthe transmission path in one direction with little loss, but will be greatly absorbed when applied from the oppositedirection.

Isolators and circulators use ferrite material in the presence of a magnetic field to achieve this non-reciprocaloperation. The magnetic field is set so that an applied RF or microwave signal interacts with the electrons withinthe ferrite material. There is a resonance frequency determined by the atomic makeup of the ferrite material andthe applied magnetic field. The non-reciprocal action of a ferrite component isdetermined by the proximity of the applied signal frequency to the resonance frequency of that component.

The junction circulator uses ferrite material in the presence of a magnetic bias fieldto provide the non-reciprocal action described above. The ideal circulator is definedas an n-port loss-less passive network in which energy introduced at one port istransferred wholly to an adjacent port while decoupling the energy from all otherports. The basic circulator building block is the three-port circulator, which isrepresented symbolically in Figure 1. A signal applied to port 1 emerges from port2, energy applied to port 2 emerges from port 3, and energy entering port 3emerges from port 1. In the idealised circulator, absolute isolation exits betweenadjacent ports opposite to the direction of flow (that is, port 3 to port 2, port 2 toport 1, and port 1 to port 3) because, theoretically, energy cannot flow opposite tothe direction of circulation.

Figure 1: Schematic representation ofthree-port circulator

Since it is impossible to achieve a loss-less or reflection-less network, the isolation between two adjacent ports is lessthan absolute and actually depends on the VSWR of the third port; the isolation is actually the return loss due to thisthird port mismatch. This is represented graphically in Figure 2. This figure assumes that the third port is terminatedwith a perfectly matched load; obviously, this is not practically achievable.

Junction isolators are a form of the junction circulator with thethird port terminated with a dummy load (termination). If port1 is the input port, energy reflected from port 2 circulates tothe termination where it is dissipated as heat. When the isolator is operated with the load removed or shorted (infiniteVSWR); nearly all the incident power will be reflected to thetermination. If the isolator is to tolerate infinite load VSWR,then the termination power rating must equal or, preferably, exceed the maximum incident power.

Figure 2: Circulator isolation as a result of thirdport VSWR (assumes perfectly matched load)

ConnectorsAlthough coaxial devices are indicated as generally having SMA (female) on all ports, TRAK offers SMA (male) connectors as a no cost option. The default isolator connector orientation is 180 degrees diametrically opposed;however 90 degrees may be specified as a no cost option. Isolator connector orientation is shown in Figure 4. TRAKconnectors meet the dimensional interface requirements of MIL-C-39012. All connectors on these components aretorque tested at 1.4 Nm before shipment. Since MIL-C-39012 specifies mating torque at only 0.8 - 1.1 Nm, thisassures that the user will have no problems with connectors rotating in the housing when a properly torqued matingconnector is engaged or disengaged.

Figure 4: Isolator Connector Orientation

Circulation

The default direction of circulation is clockwise from port 1 to port 2 when looking at the device from above. You may specify counterclockwise circulation asa no cost option. Clockwise circulation is defined on TRAK parts as the low insertion loss path found between port 1 to port 2, from port 2 to port 3 and fromport 3 to port 1, as depicted in Figure 3.

General Notes & Diagrams

ConstructionTRAK devices feature a cover that is threaded into a thick one-piece steel body to aid magnetic shielding and toreduce susceptibility to stray fields while virtually eliminating radiated fields. Parts are assembled into the housingunder high compression. This eliminates air gaps between the circuit element and the ferrite or garnet elements and between other components. The result is more uniform performance characteristics, which vary less over temperature and which exhibit a very linear phase versus frequency response plus enhanced reliability.

Electric & Magnetic ShieldingWith the exception of open structure microstrip designs, TRAK devices offer superior magnetic and electrical shieldingwith minimised radiation and susceptibility to electromagnetic fields. TRAK always recommends maximising distancebetween any isolator and circulator device, stray magnetic fields, and ferrous materials.

General Notes & Diagrams

Test FixturesIn order to correctly measure the performance of drop-in isolators and circulators, a properly maintained test fixture is necessary. TRAK recommends that customers purchase a test fixture only if there is an unusual need for precisemeasurement of the isolator or circulator performance. In most system applications, the exact performance of thecomponent is far less critical than proper system performance.

TerminationsThe standard 1-watt termination may be configured on any port as a no cost option. Higher power terminations are available.

TestingAll models are tested at + 22 C and at small signal levels. Inset limits ensure that all devices meet the stipulated performance over the stated operating temperature range. Additional testing can be performed at an additional cost.

Operating TemperaturePerformance is guaranteed over the specified operating range. Generally however, the devices will operate over widertemperature ranges (e.g.-54 to +95 C), although minor microwave performance degradation may be apparent.

Multi-Junction DevicesConfigurations of high isolation isolators or duplexing junctions (iso-circulators) are available as standard parts.Contact the factory for information and availability of multi-junction designs.

Power HandlingA nominal power rating, which is guaranteed at the maximum rated operating temperature, is stated for all units. Thepower handling capability of an isolator and circulator is the level of power that can be safely handled provided the unitis in contact with a heat sink that is maintained at a maximum temperature of +50 C. The specified peak powerapplies at operating pressures approximately equivalent to 3,048 meters above sea level. For space applications, multipaction can occur at lower power levels than specified.

When applied power is increased sufficiently, the circulator elements begin to heat due to insertion loss. At higher levels of heating, the performance of the circulator is degraded. In the worst case, the Curie temperature of the isolator or circulator elements can be reached and all non-reciprocal action ceases.

Tab LeadsThe tab leads on all drop-in units are extensions of the isolator and circulator centre conductor. There are no solderjoints except for those at the isolator termination. Tab leads are .127 mm +/- .0254 thick beryllium copper; silver plated or solder tinned (gold plating optional).

Mounting Considerations

MountingDrop-in models require some special consideration. The tabs are preformed at the factory to provide optimum contact with the circuit and a tension free solder joint. For optimal performance, this shape should not be changedand the space between the vertical edge of the isolator and circulator housing and the user's circuit should be minimised. The unit should be mounted on the flat surface opposite the recessed cover. The bottom of the unit mustbe flush with the mounting surface to ensure a proper ground. Figures 5, 6 and 7 depict several unacceptable types ofcontact. The recommended contact is shown in Figure 8.

CAUTION: TRAK Microwave strongly advises that drop-in units not be operated in a "reverse circulation" manner byturning units "upside down", as the tab shape and location relative to the circuit may not be optimal. In some cases, especially at lower frequencies, "upside down" mounting will cause no harm; however, TRAK Microwave guaranteesperformance only when the standard mounting surface is used.

Mounting Considerations

Isolators and circulators may be mounted with epoxy, fluxless solder, or screw mounted. Other than screwmounting, the following four mounting methods are routinely used successfully with TRAK devices:

Conductive Epoxy Preform: A .127 mm or similar thick glass supported conductive film cut to the diameterof the unit. Use per manufacturer's instructions. This is the recommended method of mounting.

Low Melting Point Solder: Apply small amount on both surfaces and reflow. Maximum solder temperatureis 150 C for 30 seconds.

NOTE: Care must be taken in employing solder or epoxies to avoid solder wicking up the sides, especially in the area of the tabs. The tabs on the drop-in isolators and circulators are factory formed for optimum circuit contact. They should not be straightened and should be handled with care.

Conductive Epoxy: Spread small amount over entire bottom surface.

Clamping Plate: An aluminum plate with mounting holes on top of the unit. Maximum pressure should not exceed 2.2 Kg.

NOTE: Do not apply pressure to the recessed cover because the housing may distort, resulting in performance degradation.
