Population Research Centre University of Groningen Training Workshop on Qualitative Research Methods 13-17 October 2003. Aims of Workshop Qualitative research methods are becoming more widely used across a variety of disciplines in the social sciences. There has also been a renewed focus on the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods in addressing research questions. This workshop aims to give participants a detailed understanding of qualitative methods, their theoretical foundations and their practical application to research projects, especially in health research. The workshop sessions are structured so that participants gain experience in both theoretical and practical aspects of qualitative research. The workshop has a particular focus on the conduct of qualitative methods in developing country contexts. Target Audience The workshop is aimed at researchers and post-graduate research students who intend to use qualitative methods or wish to gain a further understanding of the practical application of qualitative methods. Venue & Duration The workshop is conducted annually over a 5-day period, this year from 13–17 October 2003. The workshop will be held at the Population Research Centre, University of Groningen, Netherlands. Presentation MethodsParticipatory teaching approaches are usedduring the workshop. Each module willtypically consist of a formal teachingsession and practical activities, such as;group discussion, class-room practicalsand group presentations. In addition thereare several field-based practical sessionsduring the workshop which enableparticipants to apply the skills acquired inthe classroom to field situations.Participants will also receive a folder ofdocumentation, which includes courselecture material, reading lists and copies ofrelevant articles.

PresentersThe workshop is a joint initiative betweenthe University of Groningen (Netherlands)and the University of Southampton (UK)and the Max Planck Institute forDemographic Research (Germany). Thecourse presenters are:

Dr. Inge Hutter is associate professor atthe Population Research Centre,University of Groningen, and coordinatorof the research programme onreproductive health, HERA, of PRCGroningen and NIDI Den Haag. She hasextensive experience in combiningquantitative small-scale surveys withqualitative methods, especially in researchon social-cultural aspects of reproductivehealth in rural South India. In addition, shehas experience in research for action, suchas translating research into healthinterventions.

Dr. Monique Hennink isa senior research fellowat the University ofSouthampton, workingon a programme ofresearch on reproductivehealth in developingcountries. She hasextensive experience inthe design andapplication of qualitativemethodologies. She haspublished onmethodological aspectsof qualitative research as

well as substantive research usingqualitative methods, and has particularexperience in using qualitative methods indeveloping country settings

RegistrationTo register for the workshop, pleasecomplete the registration form belowbefore 30 September 2003 and send it toRosemary Lawrence (contact details in thefooter). The workshop is restricted to 20participants, so early registration isencouraged.

CostsThere are no workshop fees. Participantsare expected to secure funding to covermeals, travel and accommodationexpenses. No bursaries are available fromthe workshop itself.

Travel to GroningenTrain from Amsterdam to Groningen:There are hourly direct trains to Groningenfrom both Amsterdam Central Station andAmsterdam Schiphol Airport. There arealso additional trains but these involve aconnection at Amersfoort. The journeytime from Amsterdam Central and/or fromSchiphol Airport is about 2½ hours. Anational railway timetable can be found atwww.ns.nl The train station at SchipholAirport is located just past the customsarea. Tickets should be purchased prior totravel and are available at the ticketcounters or from ticket vending machines.The price for a single 2nd class ticket is€25.40 and 2nd class return is € 35.65.

Groningen Station to Guest House: SeeMap A for locations. The Guest House isapprox 15 minutes walk from the station.A taxi fare would cost approx €8.

AccommodationA block of rooms is reserved forparticipants at the University of GroningenGuest House. The accommodation is on aBed and Breakfast basis. The cost of theaccommodation is €42 single, €65 doubleroom. The location of the Guesthouse isshown on Map A and the address is:

Teaching HoursThe workshop starts on Monday at 09.00.Teaching hours are between 09.00 and17.00 each day. The workshop will closeon Friday at 17.00.

Workshop LocationThe workshop will be held in thePopulation Research Centre (PRC),University of Groningen. The PRC islocated in the WSN building at Landleven5, first floor of the Zernike Complex.Zernike is the name of the northerncampus of the University of Groningenand is located in the district of Paddepoel(see Map B) in Groningen. It can bereached by local bus or cycle.

Bus to the Zernike Campus: Take bus No.11 or 15 from the Grote Markt (see Map Bfor location). In peak times the bus leavesevery 15 minutes, and every 20 minutes atother times. Exit the bus at the second stopin the Zernike campus and follow Map Bto locate the WSN building. To return toGroningen centre take bus No.11 or 15 inthe opposite direction. The bus journeywill take about 15 minutes; however,busses are often crowded in the mornings.You can purchase a ticket in the bus(approx. €2) or buy pre-paid multiple bustickets (Strippenkaart) from the CentralTrain Station in Groningen.
