1. NAFIS SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY. a) Voice Service:

Dial 0205008890 One is instructed to press (For English and Swahili). The enterprises are then read out to the caller in whatever language the caller has chosen. The caller then chooses (using the numbers read out) whatever product he/she wants to get

information on. The information is detailed on the voice call. The information is free of charge and the only expense the caller will incur will be the cost of the

call charged by the mobile operator e.g. Safaricom.

b) Web services: NAFIS also offers web based services where you can get information with regard to various

enterprises. More of these services are discussed in detail as you continue to read through. NAFIS website can be reached by the following web address: www.nafis.go.ke

2. ACCESSING THE NAFIS SYSTEM FROM THE INTERNET To view NAFIS website hence access data open your internet explorer and type the web address to

access NAFIS webpage a

3. USER LOGIN ACCOUNTS.

The login panel is as shown below.

A username and a password is required. The username is any name of your choice; one that you would easily remember. It can be alphanumeric (letters and numbers) or letters and numbers alone. The password is also a secretive word or number or both. A combination of the username and password will log you in as a member.For one to become a member, one has to register. Registration is done by first clicking the Register link as shown in the diagram above. Once that is done, the following window appears.

Write down your intended username and your email address. Then, a password will be emailed to you and you can access the NAFIS website using the username chosen and password sent to you. After login in as a member, you can change the password to one of your choice.

4. SEARCHING FOR DATA. To access enterprise data the one can click the drop down list as shown below for various enterprises

and their related information

You can also use the search tool shown above for any data any type of product or search the website as a whole for any data related to NAFIS If you have opened a page a particular enterprise and you would also wish to look at other related information of the same, the site improvises a shortcut menu so that you don’t have to go back the drop down list as shown below

The enterprise information can be retrieved from the dropdown menu as shown below

Once you have clicked on any of the related information (say poultry equipment) you should be able to view the information as shown below

Any information you get with regard to any enterprise will have a ‘PDF and Print ‘option as shown below

By this tab you be able to download or print the information in PDF format, (To view this downloaded information on your computer your require Adobe reader or Acrobat reader)

More information can also be retrieved from other sources of data through the provision of ‘related sites’ tab as shown. For example, by clicking ‘the Kenya agricultural research institute’ tab, you should be able to view their website to get more information on agricultural products

NAFIS website offers the option of uploading information. The field officers get all types of information on a daily basis from all kinds of sources. This information can be relayed to the NAFIS website users through blogs, recent news, news feeds, and market information.

Uploading information needs administrative rights. Those authorized to upload or edit the website can do it as follows:

Login in as a member into the NAFIS website. Click on the EDIT PROFILE link as shown in the Figure below.

Click on the ADD NEW link as shown in the Figure below. Write the title of the post you are about to upload in the title box. Click on the ADD MEDIA link as shown in the Figure below. In the comment box shown below, write the title of the post again (it will appear as a link). Save draft. Change the file to JPEG and attach the file. Click the PUBLISH button. Your information will upload and will be viewable by all user

Shown above is a screen capture for the survey form that appears once one clicks on the survey button located at the menu tab. In the survey form, one is required to enter his/her name, email address, county as well as main occupational enterprise (e.g. maize farming). There are also questions that require an answer from the tick boxes provided below them and a comment box where one can leave his/her comments. A security feature is provided where one has to type the characters highlighted in green in the box below it; before sending the survey form. Finally, one will receive a message in their email responding to the information filled in the survey.

The NAFIS website offers a feedback menu. It is accessed from the menu bar. The following window appears after clicking on the feedback button.

The typing boxes provided are for filling one’s name, email address (optional), phone number (optional), county (optional) and subject matter. There is also a provision for a comment box where one writes his/her message. A drop down box (shown below), with country’s names is provided, where one inputs the country of origin

This is a service that delivers to the user real-time updates done by field officers. It enables one to get specific information once it is uploaded

The information can be conveyed through different ways depending on which mode one has subscribed to. These models include:

Emails – Digital messages sent via computers from an author to one or more recipients RSS feeds-It is a tool used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news

headlines and video, in a standardized format(One has to have an RSS reader to access this information)

Once one enters their email address onto the box as shown above, the following screen appears

The word highlighted in green is typed as it to the box before submitting the subscription request as a preventive measure. One will then be able to view the following:

11. RELATED SITES.

The RELATED SITES tool as shown in the figure offers a list of links that have other websites’ names. Once one clicks on one of the links, he/she is directed towards that particular website. The RELATED SITES offer additional informational to the user that may not be available on the NAFIS website.

For example, if one clicks on the link Ministry of Agriculture, one is directed to the following page:

NAFIS has a photo gallery whereby pictures are taken during the farmers’ field day’s events and Exhibitions in various parts of the country. They can be located on the website as shown below:

14. CONTENT DESIGN (MENU/INFORMATION PLACEMENT). The need for users to be able to search and access data on the website with ease is essential; hence the concept of content design and information placement is considered. NAFIS developers have implemented content design and information placement methods for ease of data access.

15. SOCIAL MEDIA:

The NAFIS website has incorporated various social sites namely FACEBOOK and TWITTER to interact and share information with friends. You can also watch videos on the YOUTUBE channel.
