Dear Summer Training Institute Participant: We here at Sinclair Community College are very excited about hosting you at the annual Summer Training Institute on our campus. It is sure to be a wonderful learning experience and a great opportunity for you to interact with other Project Lead the Way teachers. To help ensure that you have a positive experience at this year’s institute, we are providing you with this information packet. The packet should answer most of your questions and provide much useful information about the campus and the training session. Please read through it before you arrive on campus, and PRINT OUT the Photographic Permission sheet and the Pre-Training Experience Survey for the class you are taking, fill both out and bring them with you to your first day of class. NOTE: We are starting both sessions on Monday morning this year. If you must travel a long distance, please arrive Sunday so that you can be here by 8 am on Monday. It is imperative that you be on time so that you can begin the software loading process. Every participant should register by filling out a participant form, provided through the national website at www.pltw.org. Your school will be sent an invoice for $1800 to cover the cost of the workshop. Your workshop fee must be paid in full before you sign in on the day classes begin. Also, please sign the photographic permission and fill out the pre-training experience survey before you come to class. Turn BOTH of those in to your instructor on the first day of class. Please note that if there is an emergency at home during the two weeks you are with us, your loved ones can reach you through the main office at 937-512-5357 or after hours through Campus Police at 937-512-2700. If, after reading the information in the packet, you have further questions, please feel free to call me at 937-512-4516. I will try to answer them. Thanks for participating in this year’s STI. We will try to make it as enjoyable an experience as possible. We look forward to seeing you. Cordially,

Deb Lukjanovs Coordinator, Project Lead the Way Sinclair Community College

Summer Training Institute – Participant Expectations

What is STI? Project Lead The Way® core training is an integral part of a 3-phase professional development program that is offered during the summer on university campuses around the country. It is a foundational component of teacher preparation that is necessary to ensure an instructor’s readiness to deliver PLTW curricula to students. The Summer Training Institute (STI) provides a collaborative setting where teachers are immersed in content-specific, project-based instruction. What is the pace? It is an intensive two-week instructional program that covers a year’s worth of curriculum in 10-days. Due to the concentrated nature of the delivery of curriculum and materials, it is recommended that participants follow the guidelines below to avoid falling behind in the coursework. Accelerated programs, like those offered at the STI, have a greater potential for participants to feel overwhelmed if they begin to fall behind in the coursework. It is recommended that participants stay on campus for the duration of the STI. The university setting provides a collaborative environment and promotes peer to peer interaction. It also enables participants to devote their full attention to the mastery of coursework and to work collaboratively on project assignments. Most participants find living on campus to be an enriching experience and take advantage of the collegial atmosphere and opportunity for professional growth. What is the time commitment? STI classes run 5 days a week for 2 weeks for approximately 8 hours per day. There are “homework” components to most of the STI courses. The time it takes to complete assignments will vary for all participants, depending on an individual’s knowledge of the topic and previous experience with the material. Staying on campus allows teachers to work together during the evening and to have access to additional help that is provided by the instructors. Each day the instructors will move forward with the curriculum, so it is essential that problems with the material are addressed and resolved as they occur. Due to the short duration of the STI, the only time for additional assistance will be in the evenings. Am I ready to teach? Participants who successfully complete the STI will receive a Certificate of Completion for the course at the conclusion of the STI. Issuance of a certificate is contingent upon the participant’s demonstration of core competencies and understanding of course concepts, successful completion of all required course materials as well as his or her record of daily attendance. The final decision to grant or withhold a certificate is at the discretion of the STI instructors and Affiliate Director. The Summer Training Institute provides a comprehensive overview of the course content, and is not inclusive of the full scope and breadth of the course. Due to the time constraints inherent in a 2-week professional development session, the STI provides only an introduction to select lessons, activities and projects within the course. In preparation to teach the course, it is the responsibility of the participant to continue to familiarize him or herself with the entire course curriculum upon completing the STI. All participants are encouraged to visit the PLTW Virtual Academy (www.pltw.org) to access supplementary online lessons that have been developed to further prepare teachers in a variety of PLTW courses.

PLTW Computer Requirements 2007

Project Lead The Way®, working with its vendors, will specify computers each year that we estimate will run our course software for the next three years. Many schools have developed policies under which new, more powerful computers are placed in PLTW labs, and the existing computers are moved to areas with less demanding applications. In doing this, they insure the longest useful performance of their computers. Computers should meet or exceed the specifications stated here:

It contains several vintage clothing shops, a big record store, a very nice silver shop (Sterling Studio) and a huge Goodwill store. Don’t be afraid of the X-rated bookstores; they’re fairly prevalent, too. Walking through the district is fun; most of the houses back in the neighborhood are beautifully restored on the RIGHT side of Fifth Street as you head toward Wayne Ave. The Neon Movies is about a block from the hotel. It is a two-screen art house with new, lesser known films. They even serve a fairly good cappuccino, and allow you to bring your own bottle of wine (for a pour fee)
