Our Vision

“To inspire fearless growth”

Growth can be uncomfortable.  It is often difficult and can sometimes be downright scary.  In a fast‐paced, ever‐changing world, growth is also an absolute necessity to your success.  Professional growth requires learning new skills and that may require a big step out of your comfort zone.

That’s where we come in.  We’re here to provide you with a safe place to stretch yourself, a place of challenge and support.  After spending time with us, you’ll find that your comfort zone has not only expanded, but that it will never return to its previous size.  Embrace the challenge.

Our Mission

“Through assisted discovery, we prepare individuals to be at their best when their best is required.”

Most of us can make it through an average day, but what about those really challenging occasions‐‐ a difficult customer, a conflict with a coworker, an emergency, an off‐track project, or major decision?  These are the days that offer us the opportunity to be at our best when nothing but our best will do.  Are you confident that you’re up for those days?

We’ll help you be ready and waiting.  Assisted discovery means we won’t lecture you, patronize you, or spoon feed you. You will be an active participant in your own learning and in the learning of others.  You’ll work hard but hardly notice.  Sign on and hang on.

Learning should be a continuous process throughout an employee’s career, built on a strong foundation of core competencies and technical skills. Once core skills are in place, we suggest that employees revisit their careers and ask, “what’s next for me?” and join our career exploration programs. Supervisors have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills through our Dynamic Leadership Series.

The CORE (City of Richmond Excellence) Program is a series of courses that target seven core skills all employees should possess in order to be more successful in the workplace. Just as athletes need a strong core to perform at their best and protect themselves from injury, City employees need a strong foundation of core abilities. We need to be able to solve problems, manage stress, make sound decisions, work well as part of a team, communicate effectively, and maintain positive, healthy relationships on the job.

The “I” In Team: How You Make the Team WorkA team player is a person who plays or works well as a member of a team or group. Teams in organizations need strong team

players to perform well and reach their goals. The most effective team players realize that each person has a role to play. They go about fulfilling their role on the team or project and within the organization. The best team players promote the success of theorganization and others. Our team role sums up the way we tend to behave, contribute and interrelate to the team. This session will help attendees think about the role they take within a team.

More Than Words: Keys to Effective Workplace CommunicationCommunication is the process of sharing information, thoughts, and feelings between people through speaking, writing or body

language. Effective communication is not only how you convey a message so that it is received and understood by someone in exactly the way you intended, it’s also how you listen to gain the full meaning of what’s being said and to make the other person feel heard and understood. This session gives the attendee the keys to effectively convey and receive communication.

Figure It Out: Strategies for Solving Workplace ProblemsAsk anyone in the workplace if problem solving is a part of their day and they would certainly answer “Yes!” But how many of us

have had training in problem solving? We know it’s a critical element of our work but do we know how to do it effectively? This session gives the attendee a practical approach to solving workplace problems.

Customer Service Recovery: The Right Words at the Right Time (Online)Having the exact words handy in a tense situation can make all the difference. Often, it is WHAT you say, as well as HOW you sayit. This online program will help you with a step-by-step process of turning frustrations or complaints into understanding solutions. When dealing with customers who may not be at their best, it is all the more important that you be at your best and ready with The Right Words at the Right Time.

Core Skills for All Employees

CORE courses provide the skills to help everyone be successful in handling any workplace challenge that comes their way. Some of these courses are online, others are onsite. Each course is only a half-day and will be offered both in City Hall and at other sites away from downtown.

All In: Inclusion Strategies for a Diverse WorkforceToday’s workforce is more diverse than at any point in history and by using the knowledge and life experiences that each employee brings, we can improve communication and foster teamwork and innovation. This course is designed to raise awareness of and encourage personal growth regarding unconscious biases. You will leave with a better understanding of your own differences towards difference and be better prepared to foster inclusive workplace environments.

In This Together: Workplace Harassment & Professional Behavior (Online)This online learning module focuses on harassment and respect in the workplace. During your career, you will interact with a diverse group of people; some you know, some you don't. Some you like, some you don't. This program will help you understand the need to interact with each person in the workplace in a professional manner. You will also learn skills to help you avoid personal and legal pitfalls and treat every employee with respect.

Moment of Truth: Workplace Ethics (Online)This online learning module focuses on ethical behavior in the workplace. During your career, you will no doubt faces many moments of truth- moments that define us as employees and as people. This program will help you identify those moments and to clarify what you are really deciding in those moments. You will also learn four questions that will help you make the right decision when the time comes.

Emotional Intelligence 101: How to Feel Smart in the WorkplaceOne of the most important workplace issues is also one of the most neglected. How do we keep our emotions from becoming destructive forces? This session introduces participants to the concept of emotional intelligence. We will explore how growing this skill can reap huge rewards in self-motivation, relationship management, and conflict resolution.

Career Exploration & Development

Insight is defined as the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing. This three-part series is designed to afford you the opportunity to gain a profound understanding of your professional self –who you are, where you are, and who you want to be. To learn one’s authentic self is hard work, to decide what you want to do is hard work, to plan your very next step is hard work, but you already have what’s needed to begin the work……just look inside.

Employees thrive in the right environment, one where the vision is shared and the expectations are clear, the relationships are positive and strong, and the processes are logical and efficient.

We can help your department, division, or work group create that environment. We can customize training or facilitate meetings and workshops to help meet your team’s specific goals.

Assessment

Where is your team now? What are they doing well? What challenges are they facing? What’s the mood of your organization? Are they ready for what’s ahead? We can help your team determine where they are and analyze their needs.

Process Improvement

What keeps us from being more efficient? What are the gaps between what is happening and what should be happening? How can we bridge these gaps to deliver our services in the most effective way? We can help your team identify obstacles and develop strategies to overcome them.

Planning

Where is your team going? How will they get there? Is everyone onboard? What is most important? Most urgent? How will they prioritize, organize, measure, and monitor? We can help your team plan and navigate the trip-and maybe even enjoy the ride!

Professional Standards

How are team members treating each other? How are they treating customers? What are the expectations of performance and behavior? Does everyone know them? We can help your team develop standards for effective efficient service delivery in a respectful, professional environment.

Relationship Building

How strong is your team? Are they working together effectively? Do they trust and support each other? Are they engaged? Bored? Burned out? We can plan some time to help them get to know each other, discover hidden strengths and talents, develop strategies, and renew commitments.
