TRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ON MUMBAI SUBURBAN SECTION OF CENTRAL RAILWAY

RAJEEV KUMAR DY.CSTE(C)DADAR

BHASKAR VERMA DSTE(C)DADAR

MUMBAI SUBURBAN SECTION

• Mumbai CST to Kalyan (54 Km) - 26 stations

• Handles about 803 suburban trains which carry 35

lakh passengers daily and 208 Mail Express &

Miscellaneous movements

• Train movement is based on Automatic Signaling

• During peak hours trains are spaced at 3 minutes

interval

• Sectional capacity is already over saturated

NEED FOR TMS

The present system of train control does not match highly intensive traffic requirement of suburban section.

Controllers have no visual display of train movements.

Station staff has to manually keep record of each train movement.

No real time information to passengers about expected arrival time of trains.

IMPLEMENTATION OF TMS IN MUMBAI SUBURBAN SECTION

Contract for TMS awarded to M/s Bombardier Transportation on 12.06.2008.

Cost of contract Rs 26.61 cr.

The scope of work consisted of:◦ Central Server and Control Room Equipment◦ Rear View Projection Unit◦ Station Equipment for 26 stations including Field Interface Unit, PA/PIS integration, Expected

Arrival Time display, Video Display Unit for arrival time of next 2 trains.◦ Maintenance period for 2 years

TMS in CSTM- KYN section commissioned on 05.12.2013.

System is under 2 year maintenance period as per contract.

FEATURES/ BENEFITS OF TMS

A. For Section Controller:

◦ Live monitoring of train running ◦ Live status of Signaling gears ◦ Online generation of Train Control Chart,

Controllers Diary◦ Online messaging facility to Station Masters◦ Ease of decision making in case of

emergencies, blocks, train cancellation/ modification.

B. For Station Masters/ Announcer:

◦ Live monitoring of trains running ◦ Expected arrival time of next 2 trains is

available ◦ Automatic operation of PA and PIS◦ Automatic recording of train timing◦ Automatic update of time table

C. For Commuters:

◦ Expected arrival time indication at Platforms◦ VDU for expected arrival of next 2 trains at

FOB◦ Accurate announcement and display of train

information◦ Status of train information is available

through NTES on Real Time basis (due to integration of TMS with ICMS)

D. For Management:

◦ Integrated view of all trains and signaling gears of CSTM-KYN sections at Control Room

◦ Live train data to CRIS server for unified reporting

◦ No possibility of false reporting of train timing◦ Generation of various MIS reports◦ Quick update of Train Time Table and

download at stations

FIELD EQUIPMENT

•FIUs in relay rooms repeat the status of all panel indications such as signals, points, track circuits etc. to the Central Server.

•1KVA single phase UPS with 1 hour battery backup for FIUs.

•Drop Insert Nokia MUX equipments installed at all OFC locations between CST-KYN and Terminal MUX at CST, BIRD, ABY and ABH.

•RAD ASM 31 modems (V.24) for connectivity between Relay room and OFC

•Workstation at train terminating and originating stations viz. CST, BY,MZN,DR, CLA, LTT, TNA, DW, DI & KYN in star connectivity with router at Central Control.

•ASM PC for operation of Indicator, EAIM and PA system.

NEED FOR INTEGRATION OF TMS WITH ICMS

Scope of TMS is limited to CSTM – KYN section. However, local trains run beyond Kalyan up to Karjat and Kasara.

As per contract TMS reports are limited to CSTM- KYN section. Division wanted unified report including section beyond Kalyan by linking TMS data of CSTM-KYN with CRIS server.

A separate work was executed for integration of TMS with CRIS server (for CRIS applications of COA, ICMS and NTES).

Work scope: Bombardier: Provided TMS real time data for CSTM-Kalyan without any delay on separate server machine in Oracle database.

CRIS: To install required software’s (JMS messenger) on separate machine to fetch the real time data from oracle database to CRIS server.

Division: To provide WAN connectivity through railnet from TMS Server (Mumbai) to CRIS Server.

CONCLUSION TMS has been commissioned successfully on 05.12.2013 in CSTM-KYN section and warranty period of two years has started form 06.12.2013.

Following operation / passenger benefits are being felt in day-to-day suburban rail operations on account of TMS:

•The section controllers are much relieved with automatic time stampings in Train Control Charts. This has enabled them to focus on management of train operations.

•Since live train movements are available both to Section Controllers and Cabin ASMs, the communication gap between them has been eliminated.

•Availability of live indications of signaling gears and level crossing gates in the Control Center as well as with Cabin ASMs, is very useful in planning traffic movement.

•Availability of live train movements is especially useful during Mega blocks / traffic disruption for planning train movements and diversions.

•Commuters are benefited with real time announcements of train arrivals, delay, display of countdown in minutes beside Train Indicators and display of information of next two trains expected in each platform in VDUs placed at station entrances and FOBs.

•TMS facilitates to get Online Information of the Status of Running of Trains through NTES.
