FORTY MILE SCRUB N.P.A good place to stop for a picnic lunch and stretch your legs. Take a short walk around this unusual vine forest thicket which shares many species with tropical rainforest. This national park is 40 miles from Mt Garnet.

UNDARA LAVA TUBESTake a guided tour through one of the largest and best preserved lava tube systems known on Earth. Walk the Kalkani Crater and choose one of nine walking trails to scenic lookouts in open savannah country.

MOUNT SURPRISEMount Surprise is a centre for gem fossicking in the Gulf Savannah. Topaz, quartz, spinel, garnet, cairngorm and aquamarine can be found in the local area. First you’ll need fossicking permits, available locally or visit the Department of Mines and Energy website for details.

EINASLEIGHAn old copper mining town, Einasleigh is set on the banks of the Copperfi eld River which follows an ancient lava fl ow. Explore the gorge then head to the pub to quench your thirst - and to admire the miniature furniture collection.

AGATE CREEKAgate Creek is world renowned for agates of superb colours and patterns. Agate occurs as a solid stone or with a cavity lined with quartz, amethyst or calcite. Don’t forget your fossicking permit.

THE LYND JUNCTIONThe entire population of this town will fi t in the back seat of your car. With just three residents, Lynd Junction is home to Queensland’s smallest bar offering a thirst quenching drink for any weary traveller.

COBBOLD GORGELocated about 45km from Forsayth along an unsealed road. Cobbold Gorge is extremely narrow, closing to a mere two metres wide in places, with spectacular 30 metre cliffs on either side. Savannah guides offer guided boat tours.

FORSAYTHForsayth is one of the few surviving towns from the Etheridge Goldfi elds rush, and remains steeped in history. Check out the relics in the park beside the railway station. The historic Savannalander train makes a weekly trip from Cairns to Forsayth.

GEORGETOWNThis old gold mining town is the place to TerrEstrial, one of the World’s largest collections of mineral specimens with over 4500 pieces. If time is on your side, take a 378km detour north to the gulf fi shing town of Karumba.
