Ever heard of radon gas? A becquerel? Or why it’s so important anyone living in Greater Trail to know what those words mean?

November is Radon Aware Month in Trail, aimed to up the profile on radon gas - the leading cause of lung cancer in B.C, after smoking.

The City of Trail is located in an area of the province known to be a higher risk for radon gas in homes. According to Health Canada, above 200 Bq/m3

(becquerel per cubic metre), the home-owner should take action to reduce their level. And in Trail, there are documented levels of indoor radon above the 200 Bq/m3 guideline.

Because radon gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless, the only way to know if an indoor level is high, is to test for it.  With those facts in mind, Trail council proclaimed Radon Aware Month, to get word out that the naturally occur-ring gas can be detected in homes with a simple radon test kit.

“The City of Trail supported the

proclamation request from the Lung Association to enhance the awareness in the community to the dangers of radon as a significant cause of cancer,” says Trail Mayor Mike Martin.

“This seemed to be a great opportun-ity for some increased attention and to publicize the ease with which home-owners can check their own homes.”

Kits are inexpensive, easy-to-use, and available at the Trail Health and Environment Community office on Bay Avenue.

are available with a $15 donation, or free, courtesy of the Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society.

Donna Schmidt was an active Castlegar resident before being diag-nosed with lung cancer in September 2008. After she succumbed to the disease four months later, the family facilitated the radon gas testing pro-gram.

The society’s goal is to have all homes in the region tested for radon and to provide assistance to home-owners to reduce radon gas levels and thereby reduce the risk for lung cancer.

“Although I was aware of the pos-sible presence of radon in our area, I have not heard of any detection above Health Canada guidelines and as such, previously did not pay much atten-tion to the matter,” Martin explained. “However, this increased publicity along with the ease with which a test can be done, it makes good sense to do a check.”

The small sampling device is placed inside the home for about three months, and because windows are usu-ally closed during the colder months, fall and winter are the ideal time to test.

If a home’s radon level is above 200 Bq/m3, remediation can include sealing cracks in the foundation and openings around pipes and drains; increasing mechanical ventilation; or active sub-slab depressurization which involves installing a pipe inside the home and venting it through the attic.

Radon mitigation is very success-ful and can reduce levels on average, by as much as 90 per cent, says Britt Swoveland, provincial manager of the Radon Aware campaign.

“I would like to congratulate the City of Trail for joining with many other communities across B.C. to proclaim November as Radon Aware Month,” Swoveland said,

“We want the residents of Trail to known that radon testing is simple, and low cost.”

Radon is an indirect decay product of uranium, and radon gas comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water.

A becquerel is a standard unit of measure for radioactivity and used to document levels of radon gas in homes.

B y C h e l s e a N o v a kRossland News

The City of Rossland announced late Sunday night that it will postpone its plans to change water and sewer rates starting Jan. 1, 2016.

The proposed changes were the result of a con-sultation and were meant to address “a long his-tory of underinvestment in

Rossland’s water and sewer infrastructure.”

According to the press release, city council had identified problems with the new rate structure even before they sent it out for public consultation.

“The consultants’ recom-mendation might work in a large metropolis but look-ing at the specific impacts

on Rossland, Council isn’t convinced that these unchar-tered waters were the right approach for the City,” it said in the release.

City council will continue to review the water and sewer rates, but on a more relaxed timeline.

Council has decided that basing the new rates on pipe size may not “provide the

equitable solution council was looking for,” and instead consumption will most likely end up being the major factor in determining the new rates.

The pubic meeting sched-uled for Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Seniors’ Hall will continue as planned, giving Rosslanders a chance to ask questions and offer input.

The market is not only a place for wares but also good eats and entertain-ment. Food vendors flip bur-gers and grill pizzas while musicians create an acoustic backdrop to the gathering place along the Columbia River.

Community groups also notice the turnout and use the location to inform resi-dents of initiatives under-way.

“When people come to the market they can have lunch, they can sit and talk to their friends,” said Munn. “It’s amazing to see even with the weather the way it is, people still come out.”

But cooler temperatures will not be an issue moving into the winter months, as the market relocates to the former Liquidation World building Dec. 5, 12, and 19 from noon until 4 p.m.

The indoor market focus-es on a “make it, bake it or grow it,” added Munn, who expects the success story to carry through winter.

A three-hour power outage abruptly stopped most busi-ness in downtown Trail on Friday afternoon.

Electricity to 151 busi-nesses and 900 homes within the city's core and Gulch was cut off at 1:17 p.m. prompt-ing many stores to lock their front doors.

“A tree branch came into

contact with the pole, caus-ing damage to the mast and the components, disrupting the flow of electricity,” con-firmed Erika Schade, from FortisBC's corporate com-munications office. “The line that was impacted served a large number of customers in the area.”

Power was restored between Bay Avenue and the Esplanade within 45 min-

utes of the initial outage, said Schade.

“In order to restore power to the remaining customers, FortisBC had to isolate the line from the rest of the sys-tem,” she explained. “Crews were then able to provide ser-vice to customers from a dif-ferent circuit.”

By 4:19 p.m. electricity had been restored to all homes and businesses.

OPINION

The growing silence of the email serversPremier Christy

Clark’s govern-ment has been steadily backed

into a corner on its appar-ent deletion of emails involving sensitive gov-ernment topics.

A week-long barrage of accusations by the NDP opposition peaked with their most damning evi-dence of a cover-up, in the long-running case of eight health researchers suspended or fired from drug approval studies.

Most have been paid settlements or reinstated after the biggest person-nel management blunder in memory. One commit-ted suicide.

We are now into a second independent review of this tragic case, after an independent law-yer was unable to deter-mine what went wrong, because she couldn’t compel testimony or demand records. It is now in the hands of B.C.’s new Ombudsperson, Jay Chalke, who has that authority.

Everyone agrees that the deputy health min-ister of the day, Graham Whitmarsh, was legally responsible for the deci-sions and records. Yet somehow the only record released to the NDP for the two-year period of the firings and subsequent investigation was a heavily blanked-out update from his successor, Stephen Brown, to the premier’s deputy, John Dyble.

It refers to an “update on litigation resolution from investigation,” the substance of which is blanked out, and offers to discuss the situation by phone.

Here’s an exchange between NDP MLA Adrian Dix and Citizens’ Services Minister Amrik Virk:

Dix: “Can the minister explain why the Office of the Premier, the Deputy Minister to the Premier, has no records and why the successive Deputy Minister of Health had one record over two years?”

Virk: “The suggestion from the member oppos-

ite that there are no docu-ments is false…. There are more documents now that the Ombudsperson has conduct of the matter and is undertaking a com-prehensive review. I fully expect that he will do a comprehensive review and will consent to the release of more documents.”

There will be more sound and fury over this, but only Chalke’s report can provide new informa-tion.

And even then, the damage is done, settle-ments and non-disclosure deals have been signed, and Clark and Health

Minister Terry Lake have formally apologized.

The larger issue is how freedom of information legislation should work. Should the opposition be able to second-guess decisions of bureaucrats by going through their emails?

The traditional answer is no.

Elected officials are responsible, even if they had no actual role, as should always be the case in hiring and firing min-istry staff and awarding government work con-tracts. The buck stops with Lake and Clark, not their deputies.

There are sound rea-sons for this. Consider another sensitive decision, to shoot wolves from the air in a last-ditch effort to preserve dwindling moun-tain caribou herds.

Protesters, pop stars and politicians can sound off as they like, but these hard decisions are made and carried out by wild-life experts working for or consulted by the province.

The minister, in this case Forests Minister Steve Thomson, authorizes the use of helicopters and rifles and takes the polit-ical consequences.

One can imagine the agonizing discussion that goes on behind the scenes, as provincial and First Nations wildlife experts watch caribou herds dwin-dle despite widespread habitat protection efforts. They not only make the technical call, they have to pull the trigger.

Would wildlife biolo-gists be able to provide frank advice for or against this decision if they knew their names and opin-ions could later be used in a political battle in the legislature and in the streets?

No. And can you run a

public service if everyone is subjected to the scru-tiny that only politicians choose to endure?

No.Tom Fletcher is legisla-

ture reporter and colum-nist for Black Press.

Trustee for the Trail area and after reading the article by Darrel Ganzert on the sale of Blueberry School (Selling Blueberry school: The right deal for school district,” TRail Times Oct. 30) in your paper, I would like to clarify a few items.

These are my opinions backed by facts.

1. The vote to sell this school for $1 was passed by the slim-mest of majority on October 27/15.

2. Statement that assessed values by D. Ganzert that they don’t reflect market value has some merit but each one of us as property owners know that they are a good indicator of value.

3. Assessed value of Blueberry School for 2015 is $1,378,000.00 -

4. Beaver Valley School was used as an example -too bad D.

Ganzert forgot to mention that the School District sold this building 2007 for the amount of $700,000 - and today the assessed value is $489,000 - because of the terrible condi-tion it is in.- using one example is a big mistake to base value judgements as mentioned by D. Ganzert.

5. We are in a deficit position with declining enrolment-we have asked the parents, staff, and unions to help us find ways to cut costs. April 2015 D. Ganzert is quoted as saying in the Trail Times -”It is very distressing for us to be cutting year after year” ----1 guess if we give away our valuable assets.

6. In the Rossland and Castlegar newspaper D. Ganzert stated “while this sale may sound like a poor deal for SD20, its actually good news” ----- it is a poor deal!

7. As a Trustee that stands

for Equity within the whole district this sale of a valuable asset ($1,378,000) for $1 dol-lar in the year of a deficit and declining enrolment is wrong- we have deceived our stake-holders .

This whole deal of selling a B.C. accessed property of $1,378,000 for $1 is a tainted political vote that reflects badly on our whole district. We could have taken any proceeds from this sale and we could have put them into our education system that is supposed to treat all areas of the district equally.

In the year of a deficit we needed every penny that keeps our system operating -yet with this deficit we gave a way a prime asset for $1 -- In my opinion this is: A very bad deal for SD20. And will follow us for many years.

The Syrian Refugee plight is much on my mind and in my heart.

I am proud Canada has pledged to rescue 25,000. I hope our West Kootenay com-munities will respond as we did for the Hungarians and Vietnamese. We are fortunate

to already have a local organ-ization in place to facilitate the process: The West Kootenay Friends of Refugees website is a mine of useful information.

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SOTTAWA - A noted econo-

mist says the incoming Liberal government should slow its grand plan for billions in new infrastructure spending to make sure the money provides the most economic bang.

Jack Mintz says the infra-structure program should emphasize what he calls “pro-ductivity enhancing infrastruc-ture,” such as roads, highways, rail lines and ports that can shorten commutes for workers in cities and more easily move products to foreign markets.

A federal government that stressed that type of spend-ing, as opposed to “social infrastructure” as the Liberals have promised as well, would stimulate long-term economic growth, Mintz said.

“That’s where the emphasis should be,” he said at a Monday news conference on Parliament Hill. “Let’s move people, let’s move goods and have a strong-er economy as a result.”

The Liberals have vowed to boost infrastructure spending by almost $17 billion over the next four years, financing the effort through three years of deficits. The majority of the new spending, $10.05 billion, is planned to happen in the next

two years, with $6.9 billion ear-marked for the last two years of the Liberal mandate.

The promise was a corner-stone of the Liberal campaign that won the party a major-ity government in last month’s federal election.

But despite what prime min-ister-designate Justin Trudeau said on the campaign trail, the country isn’t in a recession, Mintz said, which means the Liberals should take their time and slow the spending spree.

“We can take time,” Mintz said. “We don’t need infrastruc-ture spending to stimulate the economy. We need infra-structure spending to grow the economy and I think we should make the right choices and take our time and do it prop-erly.”

Mintz said that idea should be one of the key conclusions from a series of three research papers released Monday by the University of Calgary’s school of public policy. The papers look at the state of the country’s infrastructure and how the fed-eral government should help pay for its renewal.

The studies argue the fed-eral government should get out of the business of funding small infrastructure projects directly

and instead give more money directly to cities through prov-inces to spend on their infra-structure needs.

The researchers found that since 2002, more than half of the 8,000 projects that received matching funds from the feder-al government cost less than $1 million. About 1,000 of those projects were below $100,000 in value.

The outgoing Conservatives were criticized for spending more money from its key infra-structure programs on pro-jects in Tory-friendly ridings. That funding often came with a requirement for signs label-ling the projects as part of the Conservative economic action plan.

Mintz said the federal gov-ernment should not direct this block funding to specific projects and should create an arm’s-length agency to evalu-ate projects for their economic benefits. The current model could lead to political interfer-ence, with governments choos-ing projects that produce the most votes.

The group also argued that cities overseeing the majority of infrastructure in the country should charge user fees to pay for their upkeep.

Take time on infrastructure spending

Former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, a folksy Tennessee law-yer whose career led him from politics to Hollywood and back again, died Sunday. He was 73.

At 6-foot-6 with a booming voice, Thompson appeared in at least 20 motion pic-tures and in the TV ser-ies “Law & Order.” His film credits include “In the Line of Fire,” ”The Hunt for Red October,“

”Die Hard II“ and ”Cape Fear.“ By the early ‘90s, Thompson said he had become bored with his 10-year stint in Hollywood and wanted to enter public service. He then head-ed back to Nashville and launched his Senate campaign.

A man of varied roles on and off the screen, he was a law-yer by training and once served as a com-mittee counsel during the Senate Watergate hearings.

Thompson alter-nated between pol-itics and acting much of his adult life. Once regarded as a rising star in the Senate, he retired from that seat when his term expired in January 2003. “I simply do not have the heart for another six-year term,” Thompson said in a statement then. “Serving in the Senate has been a tre-mendous honour, but I feel that I have other priorities that I need to attend to.”

After his Senate service, Thompson returned to show busi-ness and - billed as Fred Dalton Thompson - joined the cast of the veteran NBC drama series “Law & Order.”

Yet again he returned to politics in 2007 by announ-cing he would seek the Republican presi-dential nomination. But he dropped out in January 2008 after faring poorly in early caucuses and primar-ies.

By Jim BaileyTimes Sports EditorTwo losses to the

Vernon Vipers and Penticton Vees on the weekend wasn’t due to a lack of effort or shots on net, but the Trail Smoke Eaters couldn’t buy a goal when they needed one as the Smokies missed out on gaining ground on their Interior division rivals.

The Smokies fired 42 shot against the Vipers in Vernon Friday, followed by a 49 shot barrage at the Penticton net on Sunday at the Cominco Arena, but managed just three goals on 91 shots in the 5-2 and 6-1 losses.

“Vernon was a really big game for us, and could have put us into a really good position here early to kind of climb back into the play-off race,” said Smoke Eater coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “We weren’t quite prepared off the start, and they got some momen-tum, and it’s the same storyline where 42 shots gets us two goals, and last night 50-plus shots (versus Penticton) gets us one goal. We need scoring, we need players to ele-vate their game.”

Vees netminder Zachary Driscoll was all but unbeatable in an impressive 48-save performance to back-stop the Vees to its 18th straight victory.

“Obviously he has tremendous reflexes, but he doesn’t show-case them because he is always in the right

spot,” Vees assistant coach Steve Cawley said after the game. “He battles hard. Can I call it a quiet 48-save performance in terms that nothing looked crazy dramatic, every-thing just looked real-ly, really solid, and he had a fantastic game.”

Trail was able to shut down the Vees’ big guns, holding BCHL leading scorers Tyson Jost and Scott Conway to a single point each. However, secondary scoring, including a hat trick from Damico Hannoun and a pair from Owen Sillinger, did the damage on Sunday.

After turning aside nine shots in the first frame, Trail peppered Driscoll with 40 shots in the final two per-iods, but managed just a single marker by Smoke Eater for-ward Connor Brown-Maloski.

Vees forward, Hannoun, scored the game-winning goal just over five minutes into the middle frame. Dixon Bowen drove for the net drawing the

defence, then sent a blind pass out front to Hannoun who fired it blocker side on Smokie goalie Linden Marshall to give the Vees a 2-0 lead.

The Vees opened the scoring on a Sillinger deflection off a Ryan Morrell shot at 6:32 of the first period. Hannoun then scored his second of the night to make it 3-0 when he jumped off the bench, intercepted a clearing attempt, then toe-dragged around a defender and wired it top shelf.

Brown-Maloski got the Smokies within striking distance, scor-ing his third of the sea-son, when he banged home the rebound off a Nick Halloran drive with 8:30 to play in the second to make it 3-1.

Trail had its opportun-ities in the period as Max Newton rang a shot off the crossbar and Driscoll robbed Kurt Black on a point-blank chance in front, as Trail outshot the Vees 19-10 in the mid-dle stanza.

“There were some times that pucks went through the crease, one inch this way or that way was the difference,” said Deschenes. “We hit two or three posts. We deserve a better fate in what we’re putting out there as far as effort goes.”

The Smoke Eaters kept the pressure on in the third per-iod, firing 21 shots at Driscoll, but the Vees blew the game open in the final three minutes on goals by Easton Brodzinski, Sillinger and Hannoun, who tal-lied his sixth goal on the season.

“The three last goals of the game shouldn’t have happened,” said Deschenes. “We were trying to claw back. But they’re the best team in the country

and we have to manage the puck well, we can’t throw pucks away. I think it’s the frustra-tion coming through, but we let up there to allow them paint a dif-ferent picture on the scoreboard to what the game actually was.”

Trail outshot the Vees (49-30) for the second game in a row and deserved a bet-ter result against the league’s top team.

“I thought Trail played a heck of a game tonight,” said Cawley. “When they came back and scored that first goal, I thought okay it looks like they’re going to create some momentum here. And they didn’t back down at all . . . I think they are a much better team than what they’re rec-ord indicates. And I’m sure in their dressing room they feel cheat-ed, because of Zack Driscoll.”

With the win, the Vees make it their longest winning streak since going on a 42 game unbeaten stretch in 2012.

In KIJHL action, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks earned just a single point on a two-game swing through the Okanagan on the weekend.

The Hawks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Kelowna Chiefs on Friday before drawing to a 3-3 tie against the North Okanagan Knights on Saturday despite a dramatic tilt in the ice.

Beaver Valley fired 53 shots at the Knights netminder Tristan Quiring but the Armstrong native foiled the Hawks sharp shooters at almost every turn. The Knights jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead before B.V. battled back to tie it in the third and force overtime.

Mitch Cobbett opened the scoring for the Knights beating new goaltending addition Billy Gorn less than three minutes in. However, after a penalty to NOK forward Dallas Keller, Tyler Ghiradosi tied it up on the power play, scoring his second of the season with assists going to Tyler Hartman and Lyle Frank.

But after Ghiradosi was sent off for holding, Cobbett netted his second of the night at 10:13, and Cameron Welch made it 3-1 just 24 seconds later.

B.V. outshot North Okanagan 20-9, and would continue to swarm the Knights net in the second. The Hawks drew within one on another power-play goal by Ghiradosi capitalizing on a Jace Weegar and McKoy Hauk setup to make it 3-2 at 14:21 of the middle frame.

B.V. Fired 19 shots at Quiring in the second, while the Knights could manage just three shots on the Hawks net. Dylan Heppler tied it two minutes into the third period, taking a pass from Devin Nemes and beating Quiring, but two five-minute overtime periods would solve noth-ing as the teams skated to the 3-3 tie with B.V. holding a 53-20 edge in shots.

Gorn, a 19-year-old Edmonton native, was acquired from the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The five-foot-11 goaltender played 17 games for the Olds Grizzlys of the AJHL in 2014-15 and sported a 4.17 goals against average with a .855 save percentage and two shutouts.

In Friday’s match, after a scoreless first per-iod, Ryan Lawson put Kelowna up 1-0 beating Hawks goalie Jason Mailhiot at 16:13 of the second period. Hauck tied it up six minutes later on a setup from Sam Swanson and Kyle Hope, but Jonathon Lee restored the lead for the Chiefs.

Jaxon Joseph tied the game at 2:47, however two third period goals would clinch it for the Chiefs, despite being outshot 14-10 in the final frame and 41-29 in the game.

The Hawks play in Spokane on Friday before returning home for a game against the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

FROM PAGE 9 It was a simi-

lar story on Friday night, when the line of Riley Brandt, Colton McCarthy, and Jagger Williamson accounted for 10 points in the 5-2 Vernon victory.

The Vipers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Brandt, a Trail native and former Smoke Eater, opened the scoring at 13:10 followed by two from

McCarthy. After a scoreless

second period, Calum Volpe and McCarthy netted power play goals in the early half of the third period to make it 5-0, before Halloran notched his seventh of the season on a short-handed effort, and Black his fifth with less than four minutes remaining.

McCarthy netted the hat trick, while Brandt

had a goal and two assists and Williamson three helpers.

Bailey MacBurnie stopped 37 shots on the night for the Smokies while Andrew Shortridge blocked 40 for the Viper win.

The Smokies failed to make ground on the Merritt Centennials who are one point ahead in the Interior Division, although Trail has three games

in hand.“The sense of

urgency increases as we move forward here, but I think the guys are capable of handling it and we are getting bet-ter,” said Deschenes.

The Smoke Eaters face the Nanaimo Clippers on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Cominco Arena, then hit the road Saturday to play the Cents in Merritt.

T h e C a n a d i a n P r e s sTORONTO - Mark Shapiro says it will be busi-

ness as usual for the Toronto Blue Jays, even without Alex Anthopoulos.

Shapiro was introduced as the team’s new president and chief executive officer Monday, days after former general manager Anthopoulos declined to sign a new contract.

Anthopoulos was a popular figure in Toronto, particularly after his trade deadline deals that netted stars David Price and Troy Tulowitzki helped the Jays reach the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.

His decision to leave the team at the height of its resurgence was deeply unpopular with Blue Jay fans, making for a somewhat awkward intro-duction for Shapiro.

“Not the transition originally expected,” Shapiro said to open his news conference.

With the notable exceptions of Anthopoulos and Paul Beeston, whom Shapiro replaces as president, Shapiro seems intent on retaining much of the Jays’ front office and team manage-ment “in the spirit of continuity and building off the incredible foundation that Alex put in place.”

He said John Gibbons will be back as man-ager, and Tony LaCava, Anthopoulos’s assistant

last season, was promoted to interim GM while a search for a permanent replacement takes place. Shapiro also said other members of the front-office staff will be offered a chance to return.

Some media reports last week suggested that Shapiro was unhappy that Anthopoulos gave up numerous blue-chip prospects at the trade dead-line. While Shapiro dismissed reports that he “scolded” Anthopoulos, he indicated that there will be long-term issues to deal with as a result of the deadline-day dealing.

“In every decision there’s a balance,” he said. “There’s risk/reward, there’s short-term and long-term. In this case clearly the short-term benefit of those trades is absolutely apparent and was tremendous. At the same point there are challenges that come with trading players and those challenges, I think, need to become part of a long-term strategy.”

Shapiro said he hoped Anthopoulos would stay in Toronto, but respected the former GM’s deci-sion to move on.

“It was my sincere hope that I would have the chance to learn from him and to partner with him and to work with him,” Shapiro said. “Yet he’s obviously earned the right to make the deci-sion he made.”

The assOCiaTed PressNEW YORK - Crown ‘em,

Kansas City!One agonizing step from

ecstasy last season, this time the Royals reign after their latest incredible comeback and a go-ahead hit from maybe the most unlikely player in uni-form.

Christian Colon singled home the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning and those bound-and-determined Royals rallied one more time to beat the New York Mets 7-2 in 12 innings early Monday for their first World Series championship since 1985 and second overall.

Down two runs in the ninth, Kansas City fought back in Game 5 against two of the top arms on the pitching-rich Mets: Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia. And the Royals did it not with home run power but instead a daring dash from Eric Hosmer, a three-run double by Lorenzo Cain, a couple of cru-cial stolen bases.

Consistent contact, keep the line moving.

And that’s how Series MVP Salvador Perez and the Royals became the first team since

the 2002 Angels to come from behind in all four World Series wins, according to STATS. That’s how they washed away the bitter taste of last year’s Game 7 loss at home to San Francisco, an October heart-break that drove them to their singular focus all season.

Never waver. Win it all this time.

Now, this group of home-grown favourites that turned around a floundering fran-chise, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon and Hosmer, can take their place in Royals history alongside George Brett, Willie Wilson, Bret Saberhagen and those champs from 30 years ago.

With no margin for error, Harvey put the Mets’ last hope in his hands and hung on as long as he could. After eight scoreless innings, he pushed to pitch the ninth and finally faltered.

New York slugger Yoenis Cespedes exited with knee pain but Curtis Granderson hit a leadoff homer, his third long ball of the Series, and the Mets managed a 2-0 lead against heavy-hearted Royals starter

Edinson Volquez, pitching one day after returning from his father’s funeral.

But for these resilient Royals, no deficit is too large, no time in the game too late.

Perez looped a leadoff single in the 12th off losing pitcher Addison Reed, and pinch-run-ner Jarrod Dyson stole second. One out later, Colon stepped in as a pinch-hitter for his first plate appearance since the regular-season finale Oct. 4.

Hardly rusty, he lined a 1-2 pitch into left-centre and pounded his chest at first base. Alcides Escobar added an RBI double, and Cain’s bases-loaded double off Bartolo Colon broke it open.

All that was left was for Wade Davis to close it out. He threw a called third strike past Wilmer Flores to end it and tossed his glove high in the air as the Royals rushed toward the mound to celebrate.

The Royals’ victory earned a 10.0 rating and 17 share and 17.2 million viewers on Fox. The network said Monday it was the highest-rated Game 5 since the Yankees-Phillies World Series six years ago.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - Sandra Bullock and Bradley

Cooper - two of Hollywood’s top stars - scared up few moviegoers over the Halloween weekend.

“Our Brand Is Crisis,” a political satire about campaign strategists in Bolivia starring Bullock, earned a scant $3.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. “Burnt,” a restaurant drama headlined by Cooper, managed only an estimated $5 million.

Ridley Scott’s 3-D space adventure “The Martian” held on to first place for the fourth weekend in the last five weeks with $11.4 million.

With Halloween falling on a Saturday, the cal-endar didn’t line up well for Hollywood. But the weekend marked the second straight week where all new wide releases flopped.

The horror comedy “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” fared worst of all, taking in just $1.8 million.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - “Star Trek” is going boldly where

it hasn’t gone before with a brand-new edition of the sci-fi TV empire.

CBS Television Studios said Monday the “total-ly new” series will arrive in January 2017. But it will be available exclusively on CBS All Access, CBS’ subscription streaming video service.

Only a preview episode will be aired, free of charge, on the broadcast network, CBS said.

CBS All Access, which costs $5.99 a month, already offers every episode of all previous “Star Trek” television series, along with series from CBS’ current and past broadcast schedule. The new “Star Trek” will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for the service.

The new “Star Trek” will introduce new char-acters in search of new worlds, CBS said. But no story or cast details were disclosed.

Executive-producing will be Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and -produced 2009’s “Star Trek” feature and “Star Trek Into Darkness” in 2013.

New subscribers-only ‘Star Trek’ series to debut on CBS All Access in January 2017

Dear Annie: I am a 12-year-old who just got my cellphone. My parents are extremely controlling about the limits of my using it. For instance, once I go to bed, I’m not allowed to charge my phone in my room. They said it would make the battery worse and I should charge it for short periods of time throughout the day. I tried a compromise and said I’d charge it when I woke up in the morning and after school, but they assumed that meant I’d use the phone in the morning. But I wouldn’t, and when I said so, they didn’t answer.

They also have a limit on how much time I can use my phone -- two hours a day. They think that whenever I’m in my room, I’m using the phone, which I don’t always do.

My parents never listen to me when I try to suggest a compromise. What should I do? -- Want My Phone

Dear Phone: Try to understand that your phone is not an entitle-ment. It is a luxury that your parents are allowing you to have. They get to

set the rules. They wonder why you care where the phone is at night if you don’t plan to use it. Things like that make them suspicious of your motives.

Extra time on your phone and having it in your room are privileg-es that must be earned incrementally. What you promise isn’t as impor-tant as what you do. Your parents will trust you when they know that you will accept and follow their rules. If you show that you are responsible for several months and your parents still won’t grant you additional time, then it is time to ask another adult to help you reach a compromise. Perhaps a grandparent, aunt, uncle or trusted family friend would be able to intervene on your behalf.

Dear Annie: Over the years, I’ve been called to the emergency room for family members hurt in an acci-dent or asked to rush to the bedside of a dying friend. Sometimes, it has been necessary to spend the night.

I started keeping an old duffel bag in the garage alongside my car to serve as an emergency bag. Any time I had to go to the hospital, I’d grab it.

It has been helpful in many

instances, and I would recommend that every-one keep such a bag for future needs.

Some things that come in handy are: comfortable slip-pers and socks, sweatpants and a T-shirt to sleep in, a blanket, a neck cushion, a paperback book, a flash-light and a packet of baby wipes. Tucked into the side pockets are two bottles of water, two protein drinks, two protein bars and a bag of trail mix, along with a few dollars for the vending machines. (Sometimes these things also come in handy for the patient.) I go through the bag once a year and replace items such as water and other food as needed. -- Trying to be Prepared in Connecticut

Dear Connecticut: Thank you for

an excellent suggestion. While most people don’t make frequent trips to the emergency room, the point of such a bag is to have it handy for those rare instances when you need it.

SpooktacularThe City of Trail’s Spooktacular event Saturday brought the community together to soak up fes-tivities and wet conditions. Clockwise: Tara Gleboff was one of the many volunteers who handed out candy to children like Ashton and Ivy Palsson. Kruz and Taz Cameron got lost in the hay bale maze many times. Trail firefighters hosted a marshmallow roast, where visitors like Hannah Janzen stopped in for a treat but also to warm up by the fire. There was frenzy of different costumes from a kitten, old man, cowboy and spaceman, a crowd favourite that won most creative in the Kootenay Savings Credit Union’s costume contest.
