A Trail care aide has been playing Santa Claus for local women most in need.

Jessica McPhee has already collected over 80 bags and stuffed them with es-sentials like toothbrushes and soap for a purse campaign started by the Hospital Employees’ Union’s women’s committee, which she co-chairs.

The idea was borrowed and grew quickly with interest through social media. Many local women cleaned out their closets and donated purses while local businesses followed suit with per-sonal hygiene products. McPhee even received toothbrushes and toothpaste

from area dentists who wanted to help.“It’s been fun,” she said. “It’s been re-

ally nice to see the community support.”Her Christmas tree in her Tadanac

home is proof of the overwhelming response.

A shiny pink purse holds a tooth-brush, floss, shampoo, lotion and other toiletries. Other handbags hold much the same, but each is given some extra love and attention with treats like choc-olates, a scarf, or lip gloss.

The bags will soon be shared among local shelters, including some headed for the WINS Transition House.

Willi Coulthard, coordinator of the 10-bed facility in Trail, said those who turn up often come with very little.

“Women living in the transition house are in need of a lot of things that we take for granted,” she said. “Some of them are starting from scratch.”

The safe haven celebrates Christmas with a dinner, which “second-stage” res-idents often attend. WINS doesn’t bud-get for the holidays but always manages to pull efforts and donations to spread festive cheer.

“Very often what the residents get as gifts in the transition house are the only presents that they get,” Coulthard added. “I think it means an awful lot to them.”

Anyone interested in donating can reach McPhee via email at [email protected]

Now’s the opportune time for towns and small cities to invest in a SCEEP.

Montrose joins Rossland, Castlegar and Creston in developing a SCEEP, otherwise known as a Strategic Community Energy and Emissions Plan - which is a living document that identifies viable ways each community can conserve energy while reducing emission of gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

Funded with $8,000 from FortisBC PowerSense and $6,000 through Columbia Basin Trust, the village’s plan was developed following a workshop facilitated by the Community Energy Association in mid-November.

Montrose Mayor Joe Danchuk and staff, gath-ered with representatives from Interior Health, Lower Columbia Initiative Corporation, the re-gional district and the Village of Fruitvale over two days and built an action plan after looking at energy, emissions, and energy expenditures for the community as a whole.

“Montrose wants to be a player, like everyone else, to reduce energy and emissions that can move us closer to our target which is carbon neutral,” says Danchuk. “This really helps us, by guiding us, toward those goals.”

Overall, the SCEEP is another resource in the village’s Strategic Planning Action adopted by Montrose council that supports increasing energy efficiency and transitioning to more local renew-able sources of energy; motivating community members to participate in community and regional decision-making processes; and participation in regional collaborative initiatives.

“SCEEP is trying to incorporate community-wide action,” explained Bryan Teasdale, Montrose’s chief administrative officer. “We can’t control whether someone drives or carpools to work, or drives to the post office to get their mail,” he said. “Because we are more a bedroom community to the City of Trail, a lot of our SCEEP is based on trans-

Skiers were eager to hit the slopes on open-ing day at Red Mountain and were rewarded with great conditions.

Chase Eagleton, Ryder Eagleton and Xander Banes were so excited to be the first up the chair this year that they spent the night at Red on Friday. They ar-rived at 7:30 p.m. and were up and raring to go by 7:13 a.m. on Saturday.

Asked how excited they were for the first run of the season, Chase and Xander said, “Really pumped!”

They were looking forward to doing every run on the mountain, and planned to start off with Roots, a double black diamond run.

The boys were joined by June Campbell, who has been skiing at Red for 40 years.

Campbell planned to start her day on Silverlode runs, “to break the old legs in.”

Don Thompson, general manager at Red Mountain, was pleased with the start to the sea-son and with the snow pack for opening day.

“Conditions are good. They’re a little bit beyond early season and that [temperature] inversion that we had not long ago actually set up the mountain so that the snow pack is very, very solid,” he said.

Grooming went well

on opening day and Thompson said they had more runs groomed for opening day this year than last.

Red Mountain has already received over a metre of snow in December, and the snow depth at the top of Granite Mountain was 133 cm Saturday morn-ing, with fresh snow be-ginning to fall right as the hill opened.

The great condi-tions may have contrib-uted to the great turn

out, with a long line of people waiting for the Silverlode Chair to start up at 9 a.m.

“Best in many years,” Thompson said of the turnout. “They’re excit-ed about skiing for one, but there’s definitely

some pent up desire to go out.”

It only got better as another 29 cm fell Saturday night briing-ing the snow depth to an impressive 149 cm, with powder stashes ev-erywhere.

Thompson said that Red Mountain will be holding a number of special events through-out the season, includ-ing skiing with Santa on Christmas Day, and will also be home to a num-ber of races.

Rainy days and an unexpected loss of power somewhat dampened the Trail Legion’s Poppy Campaign this year.

Funds raised through the poppy distribution, wreath sales and do-nations were down approximately $1,200 over last year, says Legion administrator, Glenda Reilly.

But at the end of the day, almost $21,000 raised through poppy distri-bution, wreath sales and donations over 12 days, is a generous response from the community.

“Poor weather and a power out-age on the Friday of distribution may have contributed,” Reilly added. “However, we are still very pleased

with the support received from the community and feel this amount is excellent for a town of our size.”

Legion members were out distrib-uting poppies from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 but poppy boxes were on display right up until Remembrance Day.

Through poppy fund donations, the Legion provides financial assis-tance to veterans in the area who are in need of day-to-day items such as glasses or dental work.

Proceeds can also be used to help with prescription medication, medi-cal appliances and equipment, es-sential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance.

Comforts for veterans and their surviving spouses who are hospital-ized and in need may also be pro-vided.

portation so we’ll work with the regional district (through East End Services) with trans-portation planning,” Teasdale added.

“And also try to get the word out for local people to try and make better decisions to reduce their carbon emissions as well - that’s what SCEEP is. Most of it is volunteer and not something we can enforce, but we can be the vehicle to get information to residents, like grants…so they can make a decision moving forward.”

Generally, the program identifies target emission re-ductions between five and 25 per cent by developing an ac-tion plan that incorporates on-

going measures such as pro-moting walking trails such as new pathways at Lions Park, installing more bike racks, im-proving highway crosswalks with better markings signage and lighting, and fostering use of public transit.

“The village is the tool that people can use to interface all the things that are going to make us more energy effi-cient as a community,” said the mayor, mentioning infrastruc-ture improvements like street design, the regional wood stove program, and upping the appeal of public transporta-tion.

“We have a number of wood burners in Montrose and we can work with the regional district and Interior Health

to explain how burning wood more efficiently is better for the environment and people in our community.”

More ambitious plans could include using e-trucks for public works, organics diver-sion (composting) through the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, supporting energy efficient building codes and possibly powering sewer treat-ment through solar panels.

“We are in the first group of municipalities to have a SCEEP,” Danchuk said. “It’s all new to us and we are just hop-ing to help our residents move forward in reducing green-house gas emissions.”

Communities have influ-ence over approximately 40 per cent of green house gas

(GHG) emissions in B.C. and are a key partner in reduc-ing GHGs, according to the province’s Climate Leadership Team.

Since Bill 27 passed in 2008, municipalities and regional districts are required to in-clude targets, policies and ac-tions towards reducing green-house gas emissions from their communities in their Official Community Plan and Regional Growth Strategies.

Provincial targets being rec-ommended by the new leader-ship team that includes First Nations, local governments, and academia, are reducing GHG emissions at least 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020 and at least 80 per cent below 2007 levels by 2050.

Online shopping has had a positive effect on the nation’s postal service. Canada Post had its busiest year in 2015 and busiest day of the year on Monday, delivering on average 3,400 parcels per minute across the country. Trail’s outlet was no different as local employees like Area Superintendent Jeff Lovick and carrier Debbie McDonnell readied for the big parcel day on Sunday. Canada Post has seen a 20 per cent increase in parcel delivery from 2014, with over 43 million expected to be processed in 2015 compared to 36 million the year before. The nation’s postal service also hired over 2,000 seasonal employees to help its full-time force meet the needs of shoppers at Christmas time.

Premier Christy Clark sat down with Tom Fletcher for a year-end interview at her Victoria office Dec. 9. Here

are excerpts. For the full version, see the Opinion tab at trailtimes.ca.

TF: At the UN climate confer-ence in Paris, did you speak about natural gas as a transition fuel, and did you find support for that idea?

PCC: Yes and yes. The new government in Ottawa is a big supporter of our LNG plan, and part of the reason for that is that they also see it as a way forward for Canada to make a huge contri-bution to fighting global climate change.

There are 150 coal plants on the books in China today. The only way that those plants and the ones that come after will be stopped is if they have a transitional fuel to move to.

TF: B.C.’s 2020 greenhouse gas target, reduction of emissions by a third, is another target that isn’t going to be met. Why?

PCC: When the government

brought in the car-bon tax, it was based on the assumption that other jurisdic-tions around us were going to even-tually catch up. And none of them have.

There comes a point where the carbon tax can only get so high before we start chasing all those jobs out of the province.

TF: Your advisory committee says the carbon tax needs to go higher starting in 2018 if it’s going to have an effect. Do you have any other choice?

PCC: Let’s figure out what the national goal is going to be, which we don’t know yet.

TF: On a related topic, tran-sit spending. Your new minister Peter Fassbender has talked about a “new day” in Ottawa and he’s downplaying the idea of anoth-er referendum for new funding sources. Is that off the table now?

PCC: It may be possible that the federal government wants to invest more in transit, and take up some of the slack from the local government level.

TF: On LNG, oil and natural gas prices continue to go down, and sup-ply continues to go up around the

world. Did you see any positive signs this year?

PCC: What I saw this year was developing countries, especially China, making a firm commit-ment to reduce their emissions. The only way for them to do that is to move to a greater degree to natural gas, and the bulk of their industry is still located on the east coast of their country, a long way from Russia and close to B.C.

TF: Are we going to see some policy action on high housing costs in 2016, and will there be some relief from the property

transfer tax?PCC: You’ll see in the February

budget, but we are looking for ways to provide some relief for home buyers.

TF: We’re starting to see gov-ernment advertising ramp up. We saw a lot of Jobs Plan advertis-ing before the 2013 election, we saw the federal government do it with their Economic Action Plan, which was very expensive, and to most people’s eye self-serving or political in nature at taxpayers’ expense. Is that what we’re going to see in the next year and a half?

PCC: It won’t be political. I think some of that was, really, po-litical. You will see more informa-tion-based advertising out there, talking to people about for ex-ample, the Registered Education Savings Plan.

TF: Not Jobs Plan 2.0?PCC: I don’t think that’s in the

plan. I wish I could say to you no, never, but I, you know….

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Managing your access: Proposed Motor vehicle Prohibitions North of the Pend d’Oreille Reservoir and NW of the Salmo River - Proposal 2096 of Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNR&O).

Proposal 2096 not just restricts vehicles but intends an Access Management Area ‘AMA’ more than a thousand fold the land area required for wildlife habitat maintenance. Drivers, it will pro-hibit your access to areas used by industries that have created local jobs since 1855. The proposal does not mention necessary road access to three public utilities: two trans-provincial hydroelec-tric line corridors and a natural gas pipeline. High value mineral deposits occur and exploration continues. Public comments are due Dec. 31.

The proposal doesn’t state the very small habitat areas of the two uncommon bird species it mentions, one outside it. It names the wrong watershed logged this year. The very small area logged in Grouse Ck is not in Wallack Ck. In the latter logging is not planned for at least 5 years (BC Timber Sales). Proposal 2096 misleads: one has to find actual

habitat sizes to realize its intent. Is it vague to limit your under-standing of the wildlife issues, the goal to deny everyone ac-cess by motor vehicle, and more Management?

The habitat areas of two birds, the Yellow-breasted chat and the Lewis’ Woodpecker, are very small compared to the proposed AMA: about 100 hectares vs. sev-eral 100,000 hectares. The Yellow breasted chat lives on south-erly facing slopes “at elevations below 780 m (Machmer 2014)”. Occupied habitat totals about 15 hectares (Environment Canada) on the E slopes of the Columbia River and near the outlet of the Pend d’Oreille reservoir. This is all outside the proposed AMA a much larger area to the east, most all higher. “Numbers of active breeding territories were steadily increasing, but declined when construction of the Waneta Expansion Project started in 2011 (Machmer 2014)” a project now complete. The Yellow-breasted chat nests from Penticton to Osoyoos. Many wildlife species do flourish on the N slopes of the Pend d’Oreille.

Proposal 2096 does not men-tion the two new Wildlife Habitat Areas, sized 22 & 40.5 hectares,

for the Lewis’ Woodpecker just west of Tillicum Ck. These “serve to protect important habitat for this species at risk (Pinnell 2012)”; surely their size is suf-ficient? The Lewis’ Woodpecker nests in recently burned areas with standing dead trees. The large 2007 Pend d’Oreille wild-fire burned a good part of the Proposal’s Conservation Lands creating many nesting sites. Are some ‘illegal trails’ the Proposal refers to actually un-reclaimed fire roads? Are actions of a very few hunters a concern?

In a proposal desiring more government Management it is best not to mislead by leaving out, or even misstating, relevant facts. Proposal 2096 of Ministry of FLNR&O intends to estab-lish an extremely large Access Management Area, much over-sized. Vehicle access will be se-verely limited.

I urge readers to email their concerns to the consultation website http://apps.nrs.gov.bc.ca/pub/ahte/hunting/amendment-pend-d%E2%80%99oreille-and-lower-salmo-rivers-motor-vehi-cle-prohibitions by the end-of-year deadline.

William R HowardCalgary, Alta.

Pend D’Oreille proposal has wide impact

We might be in for more economic troubles ahead. Apparently the Paris Climate talks are going to result in some commitments by major-player countries. And the thinly veiled threats are already starting to be heard.

Those who refuse to cave and those who agree now, but don’t follow through will be chastised, harassed, labeled, and boycot-ted by the never-ending alarmist voices spurred by the billion-dol-lar entrepreneurs of alternative energy and glory-seeking world-order politicians.

The current US government is a leader in the charge to reduce CO2 emissions by curtailing fos-sil fuel consumption and will remain so, as long as the likes of Obama are at the helm. The buffoons vying for the leadership of the US Republican party will likely assure us that the charade will continue ad nauseam, be-cause the US electorate would have to be brain-dead to endorse them to take the reins. It seems to be a no-win situation.

I confidently predict that at-mospheric levels of CO2 will continue to rise for the next de-cade, two decades, and probably for several more decades, and the temperature of the earth will continue to do what it will do … stay the same, go up, go down, in spite of what levels of CO2 that are attained in our atmosphere.

However, the economic goods and services provided by the likes of China, India, Poland, and any other heretic-declared na-tions (Canada?) will be boycot-ted, causing the global economy to sputter, sputter, sputter. Only then, and after data overwhelm-ingly proves the falsehood of AGW model predictions to even the most complacent of us, might the masses wake up and finally figure out that increasing atmo-spheric CO2 has little to do with global temperatures.

Caveat … the levels of atmo-spheric CO2 will actually start going down when the oceans of the earth inevitably start to cool again, since the cooler water will naturally start absorbing more

CO2 and outgassing less of it. That’s a real law of real science.

It is such a sad state of affairs when main stream media outlets (like Canada’s CBC) no longer report news that is contrary to their adopted ideology, or they shape the news in a way to ensure the propagation of that ideology.

As a publicly-funded broad-caster, the CBC should be ashamed of itself.

They have become just as opined and narrow-minded as their counterpart blowhards south of the border, but at least these blowhards have an excuse. They are privately owned and these owners are far less inter-ested in reporting the news than they are in selling advertising by turning their broadcasts into entertainment.

The owner of the CBC on the other hand, is the public (you and me), and we should be de-manding better and less ideologi-cally driven reporting of news, events, and points of view.

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks soared to its fifth win in a row with three victories over their Neil Murdoch division rivals on the weekend.

The Hawks skated to a 4-2 vic-tory Friday over the Nelson Leafs and an impressive 7-2 win over the Castlegar Rebels, before laying a 6-2 drubbing on the Spokane Braves Sunday afternoon.

“These games were huge, espe-cially having games in hand on Castlegar and going in there and winning,” said Nitehawks assistant coach Bill Birks. “That was prob-ably the best game we played all year, now we’re four up and still have one game in hand, so it was a big weekend for us.”

On Sunday against the Braves, Nitehawks forward Nolan Percival scored the winning goal with four minutes 30 seconds left in the sec-ond period, firing in the rebound off a Jake Yuris point shot to make it 3-2 heading to the third.

The victories give the Hawks a four-point cushion on Castlegar for top spot in the Neil Murdoch division and third place overall in the KIJHL, as they head into the last weekend of hockey before the Christmas break.

Jaxon Joseph opened the scor-ing finishing a pretty 2-on-1 with Braden Fuller with a snipe to the top corner at 5:49 of the first period for his 13th goal of the season. But Spokane tied it on the power play when Austin Breen went top shelf on Hawk goalie Drake Poirier just over a minute later.

Smoke Eater rookie Blake Sidoni got it back when he made a power move to the front of the net and slid the puck between Norman’s pads to make it 2-1 with 2:56 to play in the opening frame, as the Hawks outshot the Braves 16-9.

The Braves picked up the pace in the second, going back-and-forth with the Hawks until a Mason Jones blast snuck by Poirier with 4:59 to play in the middle stanza.

Percival sent the game into the third with the Hawks leading 3-2, and B.V. struck three more times. Tyler Ghiradosi netted a power play goal shovelling in a rebound off a Yuris point shot to make it 4-2 at 16:10, then Sam Swanson made a pretty play in the slot, dropping it back to McKoy Hauk who sent a low screen shot by Norman to make it 5-2.

Dylan Heppler then finished off the scoring, taking a pass from Joseph, stepping around the de-fenceman and wiring a laser top

corner to complete the scoring with 5:36 to play.

Yuris had a three assist game for the Nitehawks, who outshot the Braves 41-26, and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Braves went 1-for-7. Joseph was the Hawks player of the game while Norman got the nod for Spokane.

On Saturday, Swanson scored twice and added an assist to lead the Hawks to a 7-2 victory over the Rebels.

“Did you see him (Swanson) to-night, he’s two leagues above every-body,” said Birks. “Good speed and vision, you know I don’t think he has had five bad shifts all year. He gives you everything he’s got, every drill in practice, it’s nice to have him back.”

The Nitehawks jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead on two goals from Swanson and singles from Brett Roberts and Karsten Jang. The Rebels Mike Bhatoa would score two in the final minutes of the first, but goals from Roberts, Devin Nemes, and Joseph rounded out the scoring for the Hawks in the final two periods.

Swanson has been a force on the ice since his return from in-jury four games ago. Over that time the Fruitvale native has scored four goals and added three assists for 18

TIMES STAFFThe Trail Smoke Eaters are

back in the thick of a playoff hunt winning their fourth game in a row on Sunday to pull within two points of the Vernon Vipers for the fourth and final play off spot in the BCHL’s Interior division.

The Smoke Eaters opened their extended three game road-swing with a 4-2 win over the 18-12-0-1 Powell River Kings on Friday, before being stalled by a wind storm that halted ferries and prevented the Trail team from making their date in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island to play the Bulldogs on Saturday night. That game was rescheduled for Monday night, so the Smokies, undeterred, moved onto Duncan to play the Cowichan Valley Capitals for their scheduled Sunday afternoon tilt in which they skated to a 7-3 thrashing of the Capitals.

Trail jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead on goals from Ross Armour, Cooper Leitch, Jake Kauppila, and Kienan Scott, short handed, and extended that to 7-0 in the second period. Scott netted his second goal of the game and 15th of the season on the power play at 1:22 of the second period on a set up from Kale Howarth and Kyle Star, before Harlan Orr converted a Howarth pass 30 sec-onds later and Evan MacEachern made it 7-0 on a nice individual effort with just over five minutes to play.

Luke Santerno finally got the Capitals on the board with 4:50 left in the middle frame, and the Caps would net two more in the third with Connor Russell beating Smokie goalie Linden Marshall, who subbed in for Bailey MacBurnie in the third period, and a shorthanded effort from Ayden MacDonald to round out the scoring.

Leitch took first star honours for his three-point night, Kauppila was second star, and Orr earned third star.

Cowichan Valley outshot the Smokies 33-21 and 14-2 in the third period, as MacBurnie earned his 11th win of the season and fourth in as many games. The Beverly, Mass. native was also short listed for the Player of the Week award last week for his back-to-back victories over Port Alberni

and Wenatchee, where he earned one shut out, and al-lowed two goals on 55 shots for a .968 save percentage.

On Friday, Nick Halloran had a big night scoring twice and adding an assist to lift the Smokies to a 4-2 win over Powell River.

The 17-year-old rookie scored the winner with 2:29 left in the third period tak-ing a pass from Armour

and beating the Kings goalie Stefan Wornig to give Trail a 3-1 lead.

The fast-paced match up saw Powell River outshoot the Smokies 20-19 in the first period, but great play by MacBurnie and goals from MacEachern and Halloran gave Trail a 2-1 lead after one.

The teams fired 10 shots at each other in a scoreless second period, before Halloran netted the win-ner. Tristan Mullin got the Kings within one with 1:25 to play, but an empty netter from Armour sealed the win for the Smoke Eaters. Powell River outshot Trail 45-40 with Halloran being named the game’s first star, MacBurnie the second star, and Wornig the game’s third star.

Trail played in Port Alberni on Monday but results were unavail-able at press time.

The Smokies host the Vernon Vipers on Wednesday night at the Cominco Arena. The Smoke Eaters are offering a special $5 admission across the board and a special Sud Shack $4 price.

points on the season to equal his total output from last year.

“It feels great to be back,” said Swanson, Saturday’s player of the game. “The boys are on a roll which is good and we’re coming to-gether right now, which is good timing. I don’t think it’s huge (differ-ence), but there’s an extra jump in my step, excited to be back.”

Tallon Kramer stopped 32 shots for the Hawks, while Logan Sawka and Joseph McLeod combined for 41 for the Rebels. The Nitehawks-Rebels ri-valry has never been more heated as the Hawks won their fourth straight game over the Rebels this season, in a

series of games combin-ing skill and toughness with almost 70 minutes in penalties between the two teams.

“That rivalry goes back for years and the playoffs, it’s been one-two … It’s been a long time since the Nitehawks have lost to those guys, so you defi-nitely get up for those games,” said Birks.

On Friday, Drake Poirier was stellar in net stopping 42 of 44 shots to backstop the Hawks to a 4-2 victory over the Nelson Leafs. Ryan Terpsma and for-mer Leaf Nolan Percival gave B.V. a 2-0 lead after two periods but Malcolm Fenelon made it 2-1 midway through the final frame before Braden Fuller scored on the power play for what

would prove to be the winner with 6:09 left in the third. With just over one minute remain-ing, Swanson added an empty netter to make it 4-1 and the Leafs scored a consolation marker with one second left to end it.

“It’s been a long time coming for us, getting these wins in a row here,” said Swanson. “We’re finally coming together, we’re working hard in practice, and it’s nice to be on a roll right now.”

The Leafs outshot B.V. 43-32 on the night with Poirier getting the game star honour for the Hawks.

The Hawks next games go in Grand Forks on Friday and Fernie on Saturday.

Though nearly a year away, the planning process continues in the efforts to bring in

a Grand Slam curling event to Cranbrook.

The event, which will feature over 60 in-ternational professional curling teams in two

separate tiers, will re-quire the use of Western Financial Place and the Memorial Arena.

An official with the Grand Slam of

Curling tour will be in Cranbrook in January to gauge the ice plants in both facilities and a final decision will likely be announced at the end of that month, according to Todd Pellerin, who is the co-chair of the committee working to bring the event to Cranbrook.

“If we’re not the city chosen, because what-ever infrastructure is not in place, then they’ll go to another town,” said Pellerin. “It’s ours to lose. We were guar-anteed this a while back in a different format,

but this is a much big-ger format than what we were guaranteed, so if we don’t get this, then we’re probably not going to be in line for at least a couple years for something else.”

The top tier of curl-ers will get underway at Western Financial Place, while the lower tier will use the Memorial Arena.

“We’re not going to have a problem with Western Financial Place, what we’re worried about is the Memorial Arena, be-cause the Tier 2 level is

going to be potentially held in that facility,” Pellerin said.

“Normally this event is held in a twin-rink type of facility but be-cause of the proxim-ity between Western Financial Place and the Memorial, they’re will-ing to consider that.”

Pellerin is antici-pating a huge tourism draw to Cranbrook for the event, which will attract spectators, in addition to over 60 curling teams, coach-es, support staff and media coverage from Sportsnet that will in-

clude over 18 broadcast hours.

“As far as we know, we’re on board, the curling club is on board and has agreed to pro-vide the lions share of the guarantee on the tickets and the city on the smaller share,” Pellerin said.

Professional curlers who have competed in the Grand Slam of Curling in the past in-clude heavy hitters such as Kevin Koe, Glenn Howard, Brad Gushue, Rachel Homan, Val Sweeting and Jennifer Jones.

Students enrolled in the French immersion pro-gram at L.V. Rogers received some disappoint-ingnews this week: their annual trip to Bordeaux, France has been cancelled.

“The trip is planned for early March, and the students would return in the first part of spring,”superintendent Jeff Jones wrote in a news release. “While I continue to support international travelas a valuable learning opportunity for stu-dents, I must also take into consideration the safety

of ourstudents and staff.”Jones noted that following the Nov. 13 attacks

in Paris, French authorities declared a country-widestate of emergency.

“If parents and students wish to contemplate a later departure date it may give us more time to-monitor the situation over a longer period of time.”

Jones said parents have “mixed feelings” about the trip, and he understands everyone’s disappoint-ment.

“Regarding any other international travel, we will continue to monitor world events and make decisions based on each individual application.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESSNEW YORK - It’s been a year of shifting sands in

late night. A year of broken trust in two vastly dif-ferent TV personalities. And a year when presiden-tial debates became must-see TV. Here’s a rundown of 10 big television happenings in 2015:

- SAY ‘GOOD NIGHT’:Late-night TV’s transformation began in

January, when Larry Wilmore’s new “Nightly Show” claimed the Comedy Central slot previously held by Stephen Colbert’s “Colbert Report.” Then in February, Jon Stewart announced he was leaving Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and, in July, he did. In March, James Corden took over CBS’ “Late Late Show” and Trevor Noah was declared the incoming host of “The Daily Show,” debuting in September. In May, David Letterman retired from CBS’ “Late Show” and, in September, Colbert arrived as its new host.

- RATINGS EMPIRE:Fox’s “Empire” premiered in January and quickly

became a rip-roaring success. Its audience grew every week through its May season finale - a virtu-ally unprecedented feat - and it launched Taraji P. Henson’s fearless, outrageous Cookie as the year’s breakout character, complete with a real-life fash-ion line. Meanwhile, stars from Mariah Carey and Cuba Gooding Jr. to Pitbull and Marisa Tomei were lining up to guest on the show. All in all, a rare case of a broadcast-network drama truly shaking things up.

- STREAMS GLEAM:Streaming was where the TV action was this year

as an increasing number of viewers gleefully cut the cable cord (or at least fantasized about it) while plugging into outlets like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, which all upped their stake in original content. Newcomers kept viewers’ heads spinning, including the Spanish-language Univision Now channel and, now in beta, the comedy channel Seeso. Meanwhile, CBS’ All Access streaming-video service grabbed viewers’ attention by announcing that early in 2017 it would be the exclusive U.S. home for a brand-new “Star Trek” series.

- ANCHOR AWAY:Trusted NBC “Nightly News” anchor Brian

Williams, who reported so credibly on wars for

Eye-popping TV moments of 2015

NBC News, got caught fudging his own stories as a guest on “Late Show” and elsewhere. His was a precipitous fall from grace (and the top tier of NBC News) as he was benched and replaced by Lester Holt. Though he would continue to be banned from NBC, he was eventually deemed sufficiently trust-worthy to play on second-string MSNBC, where he quietly emerged from hiding in September.

- TRANSITIONING INTO NEW INSIGHT:Gender reassignment was a conspicuous theme

in 2015. Amazon’s award-winning scripted series “Transparent” entered its second season. In June, “Becoming Us” premiered on ABC Family as an unscripted series focusing on an Illinois teen whose father was becoming a woman. July brought “I Am Jazz,” a TLC unscripted series about 14-year-old Jazz Jennings, who was born male but at 2 years old knew she was a girl. And also in July, the docuseries “I Am Cait” arrived on the E! network to chart the former Bruce Jenner’s transition to Caitlyn Jenner as part of a highly orchestrated coming-out cam-paign that included an April interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer and a Vanity Fair cover.

- HUGER THAN EVER:Donald Trump has long been a familiar face

on TV, especially since 2004, when he debuted as host of NBC’s “The Apprentice.” That relationship abruptly ended last June, not long after Trump’s in-cendiary remarks about Mexican immigrants made while announcing his GOP presidential candidacy. In his new role, he scored an even better TV gig. He became a sought-after guest on talk shows, newscasts and as host of “Saturday Night Live,” and proved to be a ratings magnet for presidential debates (see below). Trump’s typically measured self-assessment: “Nobody gets ratings like me.”

- NO DEBATING, THEY’RE A HIT:Presidential debates were big draws and big busi-

ness for the networks that presented them in 2015 - at least, when Donald Trump was involved. The first Republican debate was watched by 24 million viewers, the highest-rated broadcast in Fox News Channel’s history. The second debate, with nearly 23 million viewers, made similar history for CNN. The third debate, seen by 14 million viewers, broke records for CNBC. And with the fourth debate, Fox Business Network landed its biggest-ever audi-ence, 13.5 million viewers. (The first Democratic presidential debate, deprived of Trump or any other fireworks, delivered a paltry 8.5 million viewers to CBS.)

TODAY’S CROSSWORD

LEISURE

Dear Annie: A group of us have been friends for more than 40 years. We graduated from high school to-gether, but while the rest of us went to college, started careers and set-tled down with families, “Ray” was smoking pot, partying and working paycheck to paycheck in an entry-level job. He was so wrapped up in “doing his own thing” that it never occurred to him to have a relation-ship.

Now we are nearing retirement age. The rest of us are able to take time to travel, pursue our interests and spend time with our families. Ray is still living hand to mouth. And every time we get together or see his Facebook page, he is griping about how hard his life is and how much he envies us.

We’d like to point him toward services that might be able to help him a little bit and show him how to make a realistic budget. The services have to be free, though, because Ray won’t take “charity” from the rest of us, and if he has to pay for

anything, he won’t be able to afford it. There’s no guarantee he’d take advantage of even a free referral, but we are tired of hearing him carrying on about the life that, after all, he chose for himself. Do you know of any free re-sources that could rescue someone who’s always been clueless about money? -- Ray’s Friends

Dear Friends: It’s romantic to “live for the moment,” but that doesn’t mean you cannot also plan for your future. You undoubtedly know that, even with outside as-sistance, Ray might not change his ways. It would require an entirely new mindset, and that takes ef-fort that he seems unwilling to make. You can look into Debtors Anonymous at debtorsanonymous.org, or get information on local credit counseling through the Federal Trade Commission at con-sumer.ftc.gov. (Search “choosing a credit counselor.”)

Dear Annie: I am respond-

ing to the letter from “W.,” whose neighbor constantly complains

about the noise from her townhouse, even though she’s not doing anything particularly noisy.

The neighbors liv-ing in the condo below

me used to phone and yell at me for practically any noise. They com-plained about the way I walked in my home even though I went bare-foot most of the time to assuage them. They went to bed at 8:30 p.m. and expected me to shut down then, as well.

They spoke to an attorney who told them I wasn’t breaking any noise ordinances, but they still called incessantly to complain and were sometimes verbally abusive. So I spoke to my own lawyer. He sug-gested that I ignore them, but I told him I was being harassed, bullied and verbally abused and that I was not going to put up with it. If they were that sensitive, then they should

have not moved into a condo with neighbors living above them. The lawyer and I resolved it by present-ing them with his business card and informing them that any future complaints were to be directed to him. If they complained directly to me, it would lead to a lawsuit for

harassment. -- N.C. Dear N.C.: Threatening to sue

someone is always an option in this country, although we think it should be a last resort. Too many people think it is the first step.

Forty three years after “Danish Nisser” (Nisser means elves) was first unveiled for the 1972 International Folk Society Christmas party held in the for-mer Terra Nova Hotel, Dr. Velen Fanderlik’s mural is again on display. VISAC director Kristen Renn found the piece, which is sketched on corrugated card-board, rolled up in the back room of the downtown Trail gallery. Jul, the Danish Christmas, is celebrat-ed throughout December starting either at the beginning of Advent or on December 1. Juleaften, (Christmas Eve), the main event of Yule, is celebrated on evening Dec. 24, the evening before the two Christmas holidays, December 25 and 26th. Celebrating on the eve before the holiday is also used for most other holidays in Denmark.
