Aid is an initiative of the Trail Catholic Community to provide school supplies to children in need who live with-in the Greater Trail region.

Jumbo Update Spring 2011Recently Psyche Brown, manager of major projects for

BC Southern Interior, told me that although her offi ce, the Resort Development Branch, has remained largely intact they are restructuring into the huge new Ministry of For-ests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Th e most signifi cant fact that concerns the proposed Jumbo Resort and real estate development is that the Assistant Deputy Minister is still Peter Walters. He has quite a lengthy and in depth involvement with the proposal and has a good grasp of the issue.

In late winter, Jumbo made national newspapers which garnered much local interest. On February 19, 2011 “Globe and Mail” published a fi ve page, well-written fea-ture article by Bruce Kirkby of Kimberley in their travel section. Almost everyone in Cranbrook remembers the midsummer

storm that struck the city on July 27, 2010. Lightning strikes,

fallen trees and heavy rain that turned streets into rivers

caused property damage throughout the community.

Lynda and Maurice Boulaine remember that day well;

as the storm began to subside, they discovered their

basement was filling with water.

“Anything that was on the floor, the furniture and the

walls—they were all damaged,” said Maurice.

One of the things that most impressed the Boulaines

was the immediate attention they got from Falkins.

“They came in, they knew what they were doing and . . .

they took care of it right away,” said Maurice.

“We were really taken care of by Falkins,” agreed Lynda.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is looking for a reliable and mature live-in caretaker for the Beaver Valley Family Park, located 3 km east of Fruitvale. The goal is to create a safe and clean camping environment that meets or exceeds government standards and client expectations. Responsibilities include a mix of janitorial, park mainte-nance, cleaning campsites, selling firewood, public relations, greeting guests, collecting site fees, enforcing park regula-tions, first-aid, and security. Campground hosts need to be enthusiastic, outgoing, and friendly. Free hookup and a place to camp for the summer is also included.

And as an 11 year old, neutered male cocker spaniel I have few pleasures left to me and this is one of them…so don’t try to change me as some gals are wont to do, I won’t stand for it. At my age I’m not really likely to change a whole lot either. But I have noticed that when I’m kept busy and active I don’t tend to want to dig as much. But while we are on the topic; I will occasionally eat dirt too…don’t quite know why, I just do. Now if I haven’t scared you away yet, then you are one step

closer to being the person I’m looking for.

Now that I know you’re made of sterner stu , I’m willing to show you my sweeter side. I’m incredibly playful, loyal and sweet

natured. I also have loads of vim and vigor left in these slightly older bones. In fact, I was just walking in the Trail Parade the other

weekend and I’m pretty sure that I put all the younger, skinnier dogs to shame. I easily made it the whole way with a bounce in my step and a grin

on my face. Plus I had energy to spare, even once we got back to the shelter. All the others pretty much zonked out and had naps most of the afternoon, but

not I. I stayed up and kept the girls company in the front o� ce; just waiting for the adoption o ers to start rolling in. The fact that I’m still here does not faze me though, it

just means my perfect home has yet to realize that I’m here eagerly awaiting their arrival. But now that you do, come on down and sign up for the best deal of your life; unconditional love

US National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion in Concert

One of today’s true innovators of guitar composition and technique is coming to Rossland’s Miners Hall on Thurs-day, June 2. Co-presented by the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture, Don Ross is accompanied by his lovely and equally talented wife, Brooke Miller for a beautiful and intimate evening of acoustic guitar and song.

Don Ross has emerged as one of the most respected musicians in Canada and one of the top guitarists in the world. In September 1996, he managed to do what no other player has done: win the prestigious US National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship for the second time (he first won in 1988). The competition, held yearly in Win-field, Kansas, cannot be won only with immaculate tech-nique, but the player’s music must also display a high de-gree of emotion and intensity — hallmarks of Don’s style.

Brooke Miller recorded her CD You Can See Everything in an unusual setting, with great musicians, chief among whom is her husband and partner in crime, Don Ross, an award-winning fingerpicker and recording artist highly respected in acoustic music circles for the last two decades. You Can See Everything sounds so intimately directed to him, she might be whispering in his ear. “That was the first ‘I love you’ kind of song I’d ever written,” she admits. “This song embodied my entire spirits being lifted by this per-son’s love and everyone should be able to experience a love like that in their life and aren’t we lucky to have something like this. Public Asked To Listen For Rare Owl Call

Breeding season for the west-ern screech-owl is well underway and with it comes a bird call that the Fish and Wildlife Compensa-tion Program (FWCP) is asking the public to listen for. Listed as an endangered species both fed-erally and provincially, the FWCP is looking to track these owls to better understand their distribu-tion, range and habitat use.

“Once we locate a breeding pair we can oft en tag and track them, and their young, through radio telemetry,” says FWCP wildlife biologist Irene Manley. “We are particular-ly looking for reports from Trail through to Castlegar and Nelson, and throughout the Slocan Valley to Nakusp.”

Th e western screech-owl nests in natural tree cavities, especially in large mature cottonwood and aspen. Con-tinued loss and degradation of riparian habitat and re-moval of cottonwood trees has resulted in substantial de-clines in western screech-owl populations, particularly in the West Kootenay area which only has about 10 pairs of these owls residing in the area.

“Th e bird’s name is also a bit of a misnomer,” adds Man-ley. “Th ese owls seldom screech but have a soft , short ‘bouncing ball’ hoot – as if you were to drop a ball and the bounces get shorter towards the end.” To listen to its call visit fwcp.ca and click on the owl link.
