WHAT HAPPENED: Vehicle 2 was south-bound in the right lane and stopped because of smoke. Vehicle 1 slowed but struck the Jeep, which overturned two times. The semi’s tractor overturned, but the trailer remained upright.
WHAT HAPPENED: All three vehicles were headed north in the center lane when they hit a wall of smoke. Miller said she saw a vehicle stopped in front of her, so she stopped to avoid hitting it. That vehicle drove off. Stone, driving the RV, crashed into the rear of the semi. Delvecchio crashed into the trailer that Stone was hauling.
WHAT HAPPENED: Both the semi and the SUV were headed south when they hit the smoke and fog. Dewit stopped in the right lane, thinking he had pulled onto the shoul-der. The semi hit the SUV from behind, leaving 49 feet of skid marks.
WHAT HAPPENED: All six vehicles were southbound when they hit the smoke and fog. The Freightliner stopped in the right outside lane and the semi hauling a tandem rig stopped in the center lane. The Dakota hit and went under the rear of the Freightliner’s trailer. The Expedition hit the trailer hauled by the Dakota. The Ram hit the rear of the tandem rig. The Grand Prix hit and rode under the Ram. Fire consumed all four passenger vehicles as well as the semis’ trailers .
WHAT HAPPENED: All of the vehicles were headed north when they hit the smoke and fog. Vehicle 1, a Freightliner semi, stopped in the center lane and vehicle 6, a Camry, stopped in the right lane behind the trailer. The Eclipse stopped in the left lane across from the Camry, and the two drivers were talking.Vehicle 4, the Accord, hit the
rear of the Eclipse, which then slammed into and under the Freightliner. Vehicle 2, the 2011 Camry, then hit the Honda, which slammed again into the Eclipse, driving it further under the Freightliner. The Matrix then hit the rear of
Vehicle 6, the Camry still in the right lane, knocking it into and under the semi.Vehicle 7, a 2005 Toyota Ma-
trix, was crushed between two semis, vehicles 1 and 5, killing both people in the Matrix, and vehicle 9, a 2012 Dodge Cara-van, slammed into the back left of vehicle 5, and then was rear-ended by vehicle 10. Five of six people in the Caravan died.
