Traditions of Caring In Philanthropic Support of:St. Joseph’s Hospital Arnot Ogden Medical Center Ira Davenport Memorial HospitalFall 2013

Keuka Foundation Surpasses Capital Campaign GoalFor more than 100 years, Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital has faithfully served central Steuben County. Especially important to its services is the Dr. Donald F. Coon Emergency Department. When minutes to care count, in situations like heart attack, stroke or trauma – this is the nearest facility to provide care and stabilization, and if needed, transfer by ambulance or helicopter for specialty care at a tertiary facility.

Since its last upgrade in 1999, standards of care have changed and there has been a significant increase in the number of patients seeking care. For these reasons, hospital leadership determined that expansion and modernization were needed.

Planning, design and construction began in 2011 and in spring of 2013 the project was completed. The new unit added three new treatment areas which has doubled the number of exam rooms, one of which was designed for our pediatric patients. Additional upgrades were made to the ambulance entrance, mobile MRI station and a new front lobby and façade. Patient wait time is reduced and

care is provided with upgraded equipment and modern facilities that model the latest standards of care.

To enable the additions and upgrades, the foundation board conducted a highly successful capital campaign. The original goal of $1 million was surpassed reaching nearly $1.8 million in contributions. The Children’s Trust’s gift of $400,000, the Taylor Foundation’s gift of $500,000 and the Meade Foundation’s gift of $500,000 given in memory of Mr. Joseph F. Meade, Jr. all propelled the campaign to exceed the $1million goal.

In recognition of their generous gift, Mr. Meade’s voluntary board leadership and his lifelong friendship with Dr. Coon, the new Emergency Department has been renamed the Donald F. Coon and Joseph F. Meade, Jr. Emergency Department. It is a fitting tribute to those who have dedicated their work to improve the lives of others.

Our hospitals need to grow and change to address the healthcare needs of the thousands of people in the many communities we serve. We accomplish this by combining new programs and services, with the latest technology and highly qualified caregivers – physicians, nurses and allied healthcare workers. But, we can’t do it alone – philanthropy plays an important part, enabling the Arnot Health organization to attain its mission and vision.

We are grateful for the support of our many donors and hope they understand their vital part in making a difference in the lives we touch and in shaping the future of healthcare at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Ira Davenport Hospital.

“Traditions of Caring” is designed to keep you informed about the advancements made because of your generosity and as a way to express our gratitude.

To Our Friends

With today’s high cost of providing patient care, hospitals often are not able to purchase necessary equipment, programs and services needed to continue to offer the most technologically advanced healthcare for their community. Your charitable contributions allow us to reach this breadth of care that otherwise would not be available in our community.

With your contributions, Arnot Health Foundations set up numerous funds to support the mission. Some funds are restricted funds. These funds can only be used for a specific purpose or project for one hospital or all three hospitals based on the donor’s wishes.

Unrestricted funds can be used to support advanced technology, equipment, facilities, services or priority projects strategic to the mission.

We assure you that your contributions will be used for the hospital, service or program you wish to support. You determine where and for what your donations will be used. We welcome your questions regarding gift opportunities.

Grant Awards

Celebrate a Legacy

In 2012, Arnot Health was the recipient of a $3.5 million HEAL NY grant which is being used to build a new service – a Transitional Care Unit on the St. Joseph Hospital campus. While less intensive than inpatient hospital care, this subacute care unit will provide a homelike setting for recovering hospital patients who are not yet well enough to return home. The development of this unit adds a critical component to the levels of care we provide our patients.

Among the number of grants awarded by local organizations in 2013 are:

$50,000 from The Community Foundation of the Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes for St. Joseph’s Hospital Rehabilitation Center physical, occupational and speech therapy equipment.

$20,000 from The Twin Tiers Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation to directly assist breast cancer patients.

$2,250 from Hitachi Metals Automotive Components to support the purchase of a neonatal incubator.

$11,928 from The Fraternal Order of Eagles Heart & Kidney Funds to support equipment for the new Cardiovascular Disease Management Center and supplies for discharged patients with or at risk of kidney disease.

Anthony “Tony” J. Cooper, Arnot Health’s CEO, will pass his leadership mantle at the end of this year. Tony leaves an impressive legacy of healthcare that has benefitted us all. His vision built Arnot Health – a provider of primary and specialty services to residents of the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania.

To thank Tony, recognize his accomplishments and perpetuate his vision of healthcare, the Cooper Legacy Fund has been established. Gifts to this fund will be used to advance the work Tony values and is so vital to our quality of life.

The support has been remarkable and Cooper Legacy Fund has reached more than $150,000 in charitable contributions. The generous gifts honoring Tony will be stewarded by the Board of Directors and used to support advanced technology, equipment, facilities, services and other high priority projects strategic to the Arnot Health mission. If you would like to make a contribution to the Cooper Legacy Fund, please use the enclosed return envelope.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Spring Appeal

“Ask and it shall be given to you.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit provides quality, compassionate care to our older adult population who require assistance in their day-to-day living. One important feature of the unit is furniture to enable the residents’ care, in particular “recliner/lift chairs” that assist patients as they rise from a seated position.

Because these chairs are heavily used, the unit’s director requested support from St. Joseph’s Foundation for replacements … in turn the foundation asked you … and you gave!

Through your generosity $12,000 was raised which enabled us to replace a number of the chairs. These not only improve the quality of patient care but also enable the work of our dedicated caregivers.

From our patients and staff … many thanks!

22nd Annual Children’s Miracle Network Golf TournamentGolfers took to the greens on Friday September 20th at Elmira Country Club for a day of fun and friendship in support of Arnot Health’s Children’s Miracle Network.

This year’s event, chaired by Ernie Hartman, a member of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center Foundation Board, enjoyed the participation of 33 golf teams.

A “shout out” to Ernie’s committee – Greg Martin, Gary Clingerman, Kelly Williams, John Balon, Wes Blauvelt, Dustin Hewit & Rodney Kremer. Their efforts, combined with the generous support of sponsors, vendors and golfers helped to raise $35,342, nearly 50% more than the 2012 tournament.

Congratulations to the Otis Elevator’s team which took first place this year.

The biggest winners are the infants, children and their families who will benefit from the tournament’s proceeds. Funds raised are used to sustain the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Well Baby Unit and the Pediatric Unit at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. During the post-tournament dinner, golfers heard from Jay Franklin, a CMN dad, who shared his

First place team from Otis Elevator (listed left to right) Steve Vitash, Tom Bocon, Jim Jernigan and Dave Acuto.

Jay Franklin, CMN Father of Reese, Troy and Jillian speaks of how his children benefited from Neonatal Services from Arnot Health.
