TYPES OF PSALMS (This is not a complete listing but describes the major types of psalms. Some psalms
could be put in more than one category.)
HYMNS are clearly structured: Introduction, body, conclusion
The introduction is a call to praise the Lord; the body tells why the Lord is worthy of
praise – usually God’s saving acts in history and/or creation; and then concludes with
Praise the Lord!
HYMNS: 8, 19:1-6, 29, 30, 33, 65, 66:1-12, 67, 92, 100, 104, 105, 107, 113, 114,

WISDOM PSALMS contrast the just and wicked. Many of them begin with
“Better to …” or “Blessed is…” Lots of advice about conduct.
WISDOM PSALMS: 1, 32, 34, 37, 49, 11, 112, 113, 127, and 128
LAMENTS begin with a cry for help and a descr iption of the distress. The
psalmist gives God reasons why God should intervene. Most laments end with cer-
tainty that God has heard the prayer. There are more laments than any other type of
psalm!

HISTORICAL PSALMS give a summary of God’s saving act through Israel’s
history. These are excellent summaries of the Old Testament story!
