M-ROCK Traditional Stone INSTALLATION OF TRADITIONAL STONE

(REQUIRES MORTAR)

READ• Read the instructions and become familiar with the stone.• Adhere to your local building codes.• Ensure that you have all the tools and supplies you will need.• We are here to help, just call customer service 866-896-7625.

PREPPING THE SURFACEMost M-Rock Stone products are typically installed by a qualified mason, however, even someone with basic masonry skillls can install manufactured rock.

The following is a sampling of procedures for the installation of M-ROCK’s Traditional stone products. It is recommended to check building codes for requirements and/or restrictions. Verify structural and surface integrity of existing wall prior to installation.

SUPPLIES YOU WILL/MAY NEED:Along with your Traditional Flats/Corner Stones• S-Type Mortar and sand• Wheelbarrow and hoe• Hammer • Staple gun• Mason’s Hock and Margin trowels • Level• Masonry, circular or table saw or grinder with

carborundum or diamond blade• Safety glasses and dust mask• Grout bag• Hatchet to trim stone• Whisk broom for cleaning finished stone areas• Weather-resistant barrier

(code approved building paper)• Code-approved galvanized metal lath• Galvanized nails, staples and concrete nails• Masonry sealer (only if required)• Large sponge

RIGID BACKWALL EXISTING MASONRY SURFACES OPEN STUDSIncluding wallboard, plywood, paneling, wall sheathing, concrete board, polystyrene insulation board.• Cover sheathing with 2 layers of 30#

felt or weather-resistant barrier, lapping joints 4” shingle fashion.

• In accordance with local building codes, lap and install lath or galvanized mesh using galvanized nails or staples vertically 6” on center, penetrating studs a minimum of 1”.

• Continue to wrap weather resistant barrier and lath a minimum of 16” around all outside and inside corners.

Surface must be evaluated for mortar and face integrity and must be free of dirt, waterproofing, paint, or any other substance that could inhibit the mortar bond. Most masonry and stucco wall surfaces do not require preparation.

Surfaces may be cleaned by pressure washing, acid washing, sand/bead blasting, or a combination of these methods to achieve a bondable surface. If the surface cannot be cleaned, attach lath before applying the mortar scratch coat.

Open studs, non-rigid sheathing and metal siding must be prepared with 30# paper backed lath with a minimum ½ inch thick scratch coat and allowed to cure for a minimum of 48 hours prior to installation

Five Common Mistakes To Avoid:• Not wrapping your corners with lath• Mud and dirt stains from splashing• Hazing of the stone• Leaving voids behind the stones• Extreme conditions (too hot or cold)

FLAT STONES:• Calculate the total area for each wall by

multiplying the width by the height. • Subtract the area for windows, doors and/or

other openings from each wall’s area.

CORNER STONES:• Measure the height of each outside corner to

get your total linear feet.• Inside corners do not require corner

stones, as flat stones meet to create a natural corner.

• ADJUST NUMBERS• Multiply the corner stone linear feet (height)

by 50% Coverage will vary by texture.• Subtract this amount from the total flat

stone area.

ESTIMATING YOUR PRODUCT TO SURFACE COVERAGE NEEDS

M-Rock Stone is available in flat stones to be applied to the wall surface and corner stones to fit around 90 degree outside corners.

INSTALLATION

STEP 1: LAYING OUT YOUR STONEOpen several boxes and lay out approximately 25 sq. ft. of stone varying the sizes, shapes, and colors. Allowing for variety and contrast in the design to achieve the desirable finished project. This is recommended to help you avoid patterns and voids. Break up long horizontal and vertical lines with stones of varying height and length.

STEP 2: CORNERS FIRSTApply corner pieces first if corners are required. Alternate long and short legs in opposite directions. Once the corner pieces are in place, apply flat pieces, working toward wall center. TIP: Working from the top down may help avoid splashing previously applied stone with dripping mortar. Ledgestone and drystack types should be installed from the bottom up.

STEP 3: APPLYING THE MORTAR AND STONEThe back of each stone should be entirely buttered with mortar to a thickness of 1/2”. The stone should be firmly worked onto surface and slid slightly back and forth or with a slight rotating motion to set the stone. Achieve mortar squeeze out in a volume which results in a full setting bed which covers the substrate completely. With the proper mortar mix, moisture content, and suface preparation, the installer will feel the mortar start to grab within a few seconds. At this point, no further movement of the stone should be made as bonding will be broken.

TIP: Care must be taken to avoid smearing mortar on surface of stone. Accidental smears or mortar droppings should be removed using a whisk broom only after mortar has become crumbly.

MORTAR MIX:• 1 part S-Type Masonry Cement• 2.25 parts Sand• Potable water

Page 7: TRADITIONAL STONE - Wild Country Studios | Let Your ... · M-ROCK Traditional Stone. ... Appalachian 8pak - This is an 8 square ft. increment. ... likely ship in a crate container

DRY STACK/LEDGE STONE: NO GROUT LINESIf using tight fit/drystack method, it is important to make sure backing has been covered completely. Conceal the backing and prevent pockets from forming behind stones that could trap water. When installing, the backs of all these components must be noticeably damp, but free from surface water. Install all these products with tight-fitted joints. Generally, components should be placed butting each other and aligned for level and plumb. Mortar can be tinted to match the color of the stone you are installing to help conceal the joint lines. Using a trowel, strike off the excess mortar around the edges of the component prior to placing the next component. This will allow the next adjacent component to fit tightly. Check for level and plumb.

GROUTED STONE: FIELDSTONE AND RIVERSTONEPlace the individual stones close together, creating uniform joints between them. Stones can be cut and shaped with a hatchet to create a natural appearance. Cut and trim as required to achieve consistent width in the mortar joints. Then trim and fit small pieces into any remaining voids. For best appearance, coat cut or broken edges with mortar. Position cut edges away from eye level. Always use safety glasses when cutting and trimming.

Grouting the joints should be completed only after there is sufficient cure time of the installed stone; when mild contact will not break the bonding. Grouting may be done with a grout bag, filling joints to the desired depth, ensuring that mortar is forced into all voids. Grout should be “thumbprint hard” before raking the joints. This curing time before the grout is ready will vary significantly with temperature and humidity. Use pointed tool to rake the joints to the desired depth. Extra precaution should be taken while raking so the surface of the stone is not damaged. Clean off remaining grout debris on the stone surface with a dry, soft-bristled brush.

STEP 4: FINISHING IT OFFRemove any unwanted mortar from stones only after mortar has become crumbly. Use a whisk broom or dry bristle brush to remove. Never use water, a wet brush or wire brush as staining or damage may occur.

(PANELIZED STONE SERIES)

STACK & FASTEN TECHNOLOGYM-Rock Stone Manufacturing has quickly become the name to know when it comes to manufactured stone products. M-Rock is expanding our product lines with the new MSI technology. The new MSI, (Mortarless Stone Innovations) takes the mess, mortar and mason out of your stone installation.

READ:• Read the instructions and know what your local building codes

require.• Ensure that you have all the tools and supplies you will need.• We are here to help, just call customer service 866-896-7625.

PREPPING THE SURFACEExterior Untreated Wood Installation: For exterior untreated wood installation a moisture barrier of 30# felt doubled or a synthetic barrier is required. Exterior Treated Wood Installation: Moisture barrier of 2 layers of 30# felt is recommended when using treated plywood. Interior Wood Installation: Moisture barrier is recommendedInterior Dry Wall: MSI can be installed over Dry Wall, 1) Hit one stud per stone, or 2) Use some type of dry wall anchor. Block Installation: MSI can be installed over block using masonry screws to apply stone to block. We recommend that the block be sealed before MSI installation.

STEP 1: STARTING OFF RIGHTAfter applying your moisture barrier the starter strip is your first step with MSI P-Series Stone. It will be installed the length of your project area and it needs to be installed level. The starter strip is what your first row of stone will lock into. Drill through the channel of the starter strip. Each starter strip should be installed with two screws as shown in the photo to the right. Start-er Strip should sit at the bottom of the project.

STEP 2: FIRST ROW OF MSIWhen inside and/or outside corners are present it is recommended that you start with inside corners first, then outside corners, then fill in between with flats. The first row locks onto the Starter Strip and the stones work better from left to right. When you get to the end of the each row measure and make the appropriate cut, using the remaining piece to begin your next row when possible.

STEP 3: SECOND ROW AND CONTINUINGYour second row and all following rows will stack and fasten directly onto the previous row of MSI stone. Make cuts where necessary, staggering each row. By staggering your rows you avoid vertical seams. Be sure to use your cut pieces throughout your project. MSI has been designed for minimal waste, but that requires using your cut pieces to fill in where needed. If you do not reuse you may run short.

SUPPLIES YOU WILL/MAY NEED:Along with your MSI Flats/Corners• Starter Strip Packs• Level• Drill and appropriate driver• Drywall screws for interior application• Exterior grade screws for exterior application• Recommended 30# Felt doubled moisture barrier• Polyurethane Construction Adhesive• Masonry, circular, or table saw with diamond blade• Chiseled Trim, Chiseled Top Sill

TIP: Put cuts of similar stones together.

Page 13: TRADITIONAL STONE - Wild Country Studios | Let Your ... · M-ROCK Traditional Stone. ... Appalachian 8pak - This is an 8 square ft. increment. ... likely ship in a crate container

STEP 4: FINISHINGYou have several options for finishing out the last row of your projects and we recommend when possible to install the trims and sills first.

Universal Trim: Universal Trim a 2”x20” trim piece that can be used in many different ways, depending on your project. It can be used to finish the top of a project area, to trim around windows and doors, or to butt the stone to another surface. Use a polyurethane construction adhesive to attach the Universal Trim in conjunction with screws.

CTS - Chiseled Top Sill: The Transition Molding can be used to butt one material up to the stone. It’s an excellent way to dress up your project. Use a polyurethane construction adhesive to attach in conjunction with screws.

Chiseled Trim: This new innovative molding piece measuring 30” x 3.5” x 3.5” can be used in many different ways from a drip edge, to topping off your project area.

PIECING THE STONE: Cut to height and use a Polyurethane Construction Adhesive to attach the stone. The structural railing system may need to be cut to ensure a tight lock and finish. In some situations pre-drilling a pilot hole may be necessary to attach the last course with a mechanical fastener (i.e. galvanized screws).

ASSEMBLY TIPS:• Do not over tighten the screws• Check often that your stones are level - chalking lines can help with this• Use a rubber mallet to tap stones into place when necessary • Screws may need to be slightly backed out to allow the next stone to lock into place in certain situations.• When necessary, stones can be adjusted up or down to ensure a level course• Broken or cut stones are not waste, cut the remaining pieces into a usable stone and apply as normal.• Cut edges can be chipped, roughed, or painted to help hide the unnatural looking cut edge.• Hide your cuts by cutting and placing the cut side away from high visibility and angles.• Start your project in your least visible/high traffic area, so that by the time you have completed a few rows you will be a pro.• When using M-Rock’s Receptacle Stones, install that first and work towards it cutting the stone to fit flush against the recep-

tacle stone. Continue that row with a new piece on the other side of the receptacle.

CORNERSOnly open one box at a time

REMEMBER When inside and/or outside corners are present it is recommended that you start with inside corners first, then outside corners, then fill in between with flats.

COLUMN STONEEach column stone is custom designed for installation right out of the box.

STEP 1:Wrap your column in 2 layers of 30# felt. Install a starter strip on each side of the post. Each starter strip should be installed with two screws drilled through the channel.

STEP 2:There are 4 different shaped stones. Lock shape 1 onto the starter strip followed in sequence by shapes 2, 3, and 4. DO NOT screw any of the sections to the post until all four are in place. Each section of the first level will require one screw. Do not over tighten the screws; only tighten until snug or until no visible gap in corners.

STEP 3:Rotate 1/4 turn and repeat Step 2 by stacking the next row directly on top of the first row and continue with each additional row. As you are working up the post, other necessary adjustments may need to be made.

STEP 4: Cutting may be necessary to finish the top row. If you have to make any cuts, do not cut the bottom section of the rail on the stone so that it can still be locked into place. Make your cut and set the stone into place to assure the fit. Once you are confident that your fit is correct, use a quality Construction Adhesive. Apply the desired amount to the top and back section and along each vertical butt joint, ensuring that the stone is locked into place.

COLUMN CAP Designed for the 6”x 6” post surround system. To top/cap your post. It is designed with a 2” over hang to cover the last row of post surround and the “pyramid” design is for both function and look. Attach your Pyramid Post Cap with a quality Construction Adhesive.

COLUMN TRIMThese trims allow your post to continue up and it is designed specifically for our MSI 6”x 6” Post Surrounds. The trim ring comes in two pieces and will need to be installed with a quality Construction Adhesive, leaving a 1/8” or ¼” gap between the top of the post and your trim. Apply the Construction Adhesive along the bottom groove and where the two pieces will meet. Caulking around the Post Trim Ring may be needed.

How Do I Cut This Stone? Cutting is eas. Use a diamond tip masonry blade available at most building supply stores. They cost only around $20 and will work in most circular saws, or compound miter saws. One of our favorite saws is the small Kobalt miter saw sold at Lowe’s. It is around $100 is easy to use, small, and light weight. Occasionally blow the rock dust off of your saws and never let that dust get wet on your saw. It is concrete dust and will turn back to concrete. If a saw scares you, you can also use a hacksaw with a Rem Grit Saw blade. This will be slower but if the job is small this will work.

Extremely Durable. M-Rock manufactures one of the strongest, longest lasting, best performing stones you can buy. Some companies build su-per light weight stones, that you can cut real easy but will also not perform well and not survive in harsh environments. Some companies just build cheap rock with cheap materials. Our products are built to last a lifetime and perform in any environment. M-Rock’s stones are heavy like a stone should be because we use quality durable materials to build our stone. We have a bunch of data sheets available with a lot of numbers and technical words that prove how strong our stone is. If you would like we will send them to you.

How much should it cost to have I-Series installed? Zero if you do it yourself, and you can install this stone. But if you decide to have it installed by someone else there are a few factors to keep in mind. If the work is above a working level and scaffolding will be needed the cost will go up considerably, or if it is on a roof that already has shingles or metal roofing the cost will go up. Estimates for traditional mortared on stone products installation should start from $8.00 per Square foot and range to as much as $20.00 per square foot. I-Series installation should always be on the low end of this range starting around $5.00 per square foot and stopping closer to the $12.00 per square foot depending on level of difficulty and the amount of stone being installed.

PREPPING THE SURFACEExterior Untreated Wood Installation: A moisture barrier of 30# felt doubled or a synthetic barrier is required. Exterior Treated Wood Installation: Moisture barrier of 2 layers of 30# felt is recommended. Interior Wood Installation: Moisture barrier is recommended.Interior Dry Wall: I-SERIES can be installed over Dry Wall, 1) Hit one stud per stone, or 2) Use some type of dry wall anchor. Block Installation: I-SERIES can be installed over block using masonry screws to apply stone to block. We recommend that the block be sealed before I-SERIES installation. Moisture barrier of 2 layers of 30# felt is recommended.

USE THE STAIR STEP TECHNIQUE WHEN INSTALLING I-SERIES

STEP 1: START WITH CORNERS• Always start at the bottom of an outside corner. Start with a flat stone (see pic A) and

corner stone (see pic B). Each stone works together to create M-Rock’s innovative new corner system. If you are installing on a flat wall skip to step 3 and start at a bottom corner using flat stones only.

• When starting on an outside corner begin with a flat stone in hand and match it with a corner stone that is the same height. Two stones can be used to achieve this match and is a good technique from time to time. Align the corner stone or stones so that it overlaps the end of the flat stone.

• Once you have achieved the proper look and alignment at-tach the stones to the bottom of the outside corner by plac-ing screws through the tab screw holes (see pic D). Make sure to stagger corner lengths and heights as you go up.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:• 30# felt moisture barrier • Level and chalk line• Electric Drill

FASTENER CHOICES:• Drywall screws/anchors• Exterior grade screws• Staples• Construction Adhesive

STEP 2: YOUR FIRST ROW • To start your first row of flat stones either butt a flat stone to the corner stone already on the wall, or start in a bottom corner

with a flat stone. Make sure the stone is straight then place a screw through the tab screw hole (see pic D) securing it to the wall.

• No starter strip is necessary for the first row. A dab of concrete construction adhesive on the back of each stone on the first row can be used to assure a tight fit to the wall, but is not required. All rows above the first row will utilize the concrete locking system engineered into the top and bottom of each stone to assure a tight solid feel.

STEP 3: SECOND ROW AND UP• To start the second row, place flat stones on top of the first row

already installed. Align the ends of each stone to the stone beside it. Align the concrete locking channels on the top & bottom of each stone. Press down on the stone before screwing the stone to the wall to assure a tight fit, then place a screw through the tab screw hole (see pic D) to adhere the stone to the wall. Check stones often that they are straight and fit tight to the stones around them.

• To achieve the stair step technique install a few flat stones on each row, then repeat step 2, 3, & 4. Never continue more than a few stones on any line. Keep the lower row just ahead of the row above it, and follow this process on each row above until comple-tion. Never complete rows of stone that are the same size.

• Keep stone sizes and colors random and do your best to keep from running one size of stone more than 30 inches or so in a single horizontal line (see pic D).

CUTTING YOUR STONE• Most cuts will be simple. Make sure you use some of the small pieces of stones left from your cuts, you will love the look

they will give you. Cut pieces of stone will often not have a tab on them. This is not a problem, simply place a dab of con-crete construction adhesive on the back of the small stones and adhesive them in place. The stone locking system on the top and bottom of each stone will also assist in holding the stones in place.

STEP 4: TOP AND FINAL ROW• The top and final row of stone usually requires the tabs to be re-

moved and the stones cut to fit into place. To install after the cor-rect cut has been made use a few dabs of concrete construction adhesive on the back of each stone and slide them into place. A table saw with a diamond tip blade is the best for this cut, but any saw will work. A grinder is a good option for this as well.

• To prepare an exterior installation a water barrier behind the stone is all that is required. M-Rock requires two properly installed layers of 30 weight felt, or one layer of Ice Shield (see complete instructions for water barrier requirements). Window and doors require additional water proofing techniques. Check with local building code for water barrier requirements before installation.

TIPS & TECHNIQUES

What type of screws should you use? I-Series stone can be installed with multiple types of screws. Determining the proper screw will depend on the specifics of each project. To best determine the proper screws consider the substrate and environment of your specific project. For example; an exterior project will require a treated screw designed for exterior use. A project over concrete will require a concrete anchor screw. If the stone is being installed in OSB a small ¾ inch screw is all that you need.

Blend your stone.

For best results open multiple boxes and pull stones randomly from all boxes. M-Rock’s I-Series is handcrafted, colored, and built with natural products so things can vary a bit. It’s a good thing as long as you blend the stone and be cautious not to group to many same color stones together.

Keep the vertical lines to a minimum. Every time you stack a stone the end of that stone creates a vertical line. If you stack two stones that are the same on top of each other you create a vertical stack line two stones high. Two stones high is fine, three is pushing it. Break the vertical lines by placing the top stone so as to not align with the end of the stones below it (see pic D).

Keep horizontal lines to a minimum. Every time you place a stone on the wall the top and the bottom of that stone creates a horizontal stone line. If you place a stone the same size beside that stone you create a longer horizontal line on both the top and the bottom. Limit continuous horizontal lines to 32 inches or so. Simply use different height stones on same stone line as often as possible. Random makes this product better.

Don’t be afraid of the saw. Cutting of the I-Series is simple. Any circular saw, chop saw, compound miter saw, or table saw will work. Install a diamond tip masonry blade in it and it will handle the stone. A grinder is a good tool to have on hand to take care of small changes to the stone. I-Series is a concrete product and when cutting this stone it creates concrete dust. If you wet the concrete dust you get concrete, so don’t get it wet when you cut it. To clean stones use a bristled brush to brush off the concrete dust.

Why does the stone look different in the box? I-Series is a concrete product and concrete can do all sorts of interesting things in a box like absorb moisture, or cure super slow. These are good things for concrete but cause the product to look different in the box. Once on the wall the stone will gradually return to its intended color. The stone appearance will also vary with every change in lighting. If you blend your stone the colors will look beautiful.

I-Series has some flexural movement on the wall. Is this OK? I series tabs are engineered to have some movement. This assures that freezing and thawing will never damage the stone and also allows for some variance in the stone itself. If the slight movement is a problem for you a dab of concrete construction adhesive is all you need to fix the movement.

“I-Series has no mortar and from time to time I can see through the joints in the stone. this can bedistracting in the overall look of the product. What should I do?”

Simply keep the background dark. Exterior use is easy, use a black water barrier. Interior could require a quick black paint job behind the stone to insure the shadows of the joints in the stone look dark. This will give you a much better overall look of the stone project. The only places that this will be a problem is at eye level where you view the stone, but remember we do sit down and that changes the eye level view.

Is this product ok for exterior use?I-Series is built for the outdoors, and will exceed all recommendations for strength and endurance. Simply apply the proper water barrier, use an exterior grade screw, and this stone will perform for a lifetime.

Can I install this product in bad weather?Weather will never effect the I-Series installation. The only consideration is the concrete dust when cutting this product. Keep the cutting dry, brush off the dust, and you can install this product north of the Arctic Circle if you want.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTRATESM-Brick can be installed over multiple surfaces. The recommended substrate is plywood or OSB. Wood surfaces are the easiest to prepare and the easiest substrate on which to attach M-Brick. Masonry substrates require concrete anchoring screws, and interior installation over drywall requires proper drywall anchors.

PREPPING THE SURFACEExterior surface preparation is critical to the project. Follow all local and state building codes regarding the proper moisture barriers and building practices for your area. A minimum recommendation for a moisture barrier is 30 pound builders felt, however synthetic felts and rubberized ice guards are great alternatives. Seams on the moisture barrier should be lapped a minimum of 3” at horizontal seams and a minimum of 6” on vertical seams. Always start installing the barrier at the bottom of the wall and work up. Corners should be wrapped at least 12” to either side of the corner without a break in the barrier. Horizontal ledges, windows, and doors require flashing that should overlap the barrier below ensuring proper draining of moisture. Masonry substrates should be sealed prior to installation. Interior installation does not require surface preparation beyond ensuring that the substrate is properly constructed and secured.

PLANNING YOUR PROJECTM-Brick requires a proper layout prior to installation to ensure the best results. The first step is to determine the best starting point. For a project that has more than one plane of wall it is best to start on the surface that is furthest back; then continue installation on the planes that are further out after the back wall is complete. When installing projects with outside corners it is necessary to install the corner bricks first and work away from them. Alternating corner bricks will create the proper bond lines and brick pattern. When installing a project with two outside cor-ners, such as columns, it is necessary to install both corner bricks on each course and work towards the center of the project making cuts as needed in the flat bricks.

BOND LINESFor walls with no outside corners it is necessary to lay out bond lines, or vertical starting lines. Bond lines are vertical guidelines that maintain the alternating brick pattern. Bond lines are 4 3/8” apart and are typically marked at the center of the wall. To properly mark the bond lines first find the center of the wall. Once the center has been marked, measure 2 3/16” to the left of the center and 2 3/16” to the right of the center. These points will be the bond lines. Once the bond lines have been determined plumb lines will need to be marked with a level the entire height of the project. Another option for marking the bond lines is to repeat the process of marking the center and bond line points at the top of the project and use a chalk line to mark the bond lines. If it is determined that there will be a brick frag-ment smaller than 2”at the end of the first coarse to the to the left or right the bond lines can be shifted to prevent the small fragment. Avoiding small brick fragments where possible will help create a better finished appearance.

Next the base line, or horizontal starting line, will need to be determined. For a project that has a floor or a ledge that is level; the floor or ledge can be used as the base line. Simply set the brick directly on the floor or ledge. For a project that begins above grade or over a floor or ledge that is not level it is necessary to mark a base line. Once the starting point is determined mark a level line along the entire length of the wall at 3 ¾” above the desired bottom edge of the project. This line will be the top edge of the brick rail during installation of the first row of brick. It will be necessary to maintain the base line throughout the entire project to ensure the horizontal grout lines remain aligned. The base line can be transferred from one area to another in increments of 3 ¾” if the starting point needs adjusted due to change in grade or changes in floor height.

STARTING OFF RIGHTTo begin the installation on a flat wall set the first brick on the level floor or align the top edge of the brick rail to the base line. Then align the left edge of the brick rail to the left bond line and attach the brick to the wall with one screw through the arrow on the top of the brick rail. Install another brick to the right of the first brick by butting the brick rails together at the ends, and maintain the base line by either setting the brick on the floor or keeping the brick rail aligned to the base line.

Attach the second brick with one screw through the arrow at the top of the brick rail. Next install the first brick of the second course by stacking a brick above the first two bricks. Slide the bottom of the brick rail down into the top of the first brick rails and align the left edge of the brick rail to the right bond line. Attach the third brick to the wall by placing a screw through the arrow at the top of the rail. Continue a stepping pattern by starting a new course at alternating bond lines

once the course below is extended enough to start a new course. Additional screws can be installed in the grout lines during the installation to ensure a solid installation. Once the first course is complete it is necessary to install at least one screw to the bottom of each brick of the first course.

Continue installing the brick towards the edges of the wall keeping the brick rails tight at vertical joints. Once a course reaches a termination point and needs to be cut, take a measurement of the remaining space. Subtract ½” from the measurement and apply the remaining measurement to a brick by pulling from the edge of the brick rail that will mate up to the brick that is already installed; thus placing the

cut edge to the outside of the project. The half inch that was subtracted will allow for a grout line on the outside edge of the project or on the inside edge of a corner where needed.

To begin installation on a wall with an outside corner use the instructions for the base line to determine the proper starting point. There will not be a bond line when beginning with an outside corner. Install the first corner

brick by placing a screw through the arrow on the top of the brick rail on the long side of the corner. When possible the next step should be to install a flat brick on both sides of the corner brick to extend the first course of brick far enough to allow installation the second corner brick, therefore starting the second course. The long side of the second brick will be on the opposite side of the corner from the first course. Install a screw through the arrow on the top edge of the brick rail on the long side. At this point install two additional screws through the bottom of the second course corner brick rail; one on the long side and one on the short side of the corner. These addi-tional screws will secure the both the first and second corner bricks and this process should be repeated up the entire corner. Installing alternating corners will create the bond line for this wall. When a point is reached where cutting becomes necessary use the method described on the flat wall section above to determine length and leave enough space for a grout line at termination points.

FINISHING IT OFFGrouting the brick requires planning and preparation to accommodate conditions such as square footage, temperature, and weather condi-tions that will affect the time required for grouting. A good rule to follow when grouting is to allow a minimum of two hours to complete grout and finishing on projects under 100 square feet. Projects over 100 square feet can require more time.

Mix the grout thoroughly to a consistency resembling a thick milk shake. The grout should be thick enough so that it does not run out of the grout lines on a vertical wall. Fill a masonry grout bag to a comfortable level, usually around half full, and begin filling the grout lines at the bottom of the project. It is good practice to fill the vertical lines on a course of brick before filling the horizontal lines. Always begin filling the grout lines from the deepest point, and completely fill all voids and spaces in the grout line. It is best to fill the grout line slightly over full. Once the grout is placed in the grout lines do not touch it until it has firmed up. The time it takes to firm up can vary depending

on temperature and project conditions. If there are runs, spots, or large over fills it is best to wait until the grout has firmed up before cleaning the area or tooling the grout. A good rule of thumb regarding the firmness of the grout is that the grout will crumble when raked or tooled, and will not stick to the striking tools or your skin when touched.

Finishing the grout lines may be referred as striking or tooling the joints. This can be done with a brick striking tools, tuck trowel, or a round metal pipe typically ¾” in diameter. Once the grout is firm enough to strike, press the tool into the grout lines and drag out excess grout with firm strokes. Start with the vertical grout lines, then strike the horizontal lines with long strokes to create a smooth continuous grout lines. Once tooling is complete, brush the project down with a stiff bristle brush to smooth out the surface of the grout and remove dust and excess grout from the surface of the brick.

When grouting is required between M-Brick and other materials such as wood, vinyl, or metal it is necessary to run a bead of caulk to allow for the expansion and contraction that can occur. A 1/4” caulk joint is recommended.

M-ROCK Stone FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

THE M-ROCK STONE ADVANTAGE1. Why choose M-ROCK Stone and Brick Veneers for your project?Innovation, engineering, ease of installation, and superior customer service are a few of the reasons why you should choose M-Rock products. Our team of professionals are here to assist you. We believe that customer service is not a thing of the past, but it is one of our top priorities. Relationships are important, let us build one with you and your staff.

2. What is manufactured stone?Manufactured stone veneer is cast from molds of real stone which makes it lighter than natural stone. M-Rock uses a combination of aggregate and iron oxide for color that goes the entire depth of the stone making it last and last.

3. What are the advantages of using manufactured stone versus using natural stone?Manufactured stone can be installed for a fraction of the cost of natural stone. M-Rock’s architectural stone veneer is lighter weight, designed to adhere easily to a variety of structurally sound surfaces, and is capable of installations that would normally be very difficult and costly to achieve with natural stone. Large sections of natural stone may need weight considerations. MSI along with M-Rock’s traditional stone veneer products are 8-12 lbs a square foot, which is roughly 1/3 of the weight of natural stone. Natural stone may require wall ties and footings, which, in turn, can increase the project cost and difficulty.

4. How does the cost of M-ROCK Stone compare to the cost of natural stone?Installed, M-Rock manufactured stone is approximately 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of natural stone. Its light weight properties eliminate the need for wall ties or footings. Manufactured stone has a 2% (approximately) waste factor versus 10% or more for natural stone.

5. Does M-ROCK Stone come with a warranty? All of M-Rock’s Stone and Brick Veneers come with a 40-year warranty and a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.

6. Are all of the required building codes met by M-ROCK Stone?M-Rock Stone complies with all applicable Building Code requirements. A copy of the M-Rock Stone Technical Data Sheet is available online at http://www.m-rockstone.com. Each consumer is responsible for adhering to their local building codes.

7. Is M-ROCK Stone a Green Product?M-Rock takes great pride in the fact that all of our products are made of sustainable concrete. We do our part by selecting raw materials from local suppliers so that we can cut fuel emissions through delivery.

WHERE TO USE1. What type surface can M-ROCK Stone be applied to?M-Rock stone can be applied over any structurally sound surface such as:• Masonry or concrete walls: Stone may be applied to these walls provided the surface is clean and free from paint or sealer.

Painted or sealed surfaces should be sandblasted or lathed over. • Wood frame new construction: Wood studs should be on 16” centers and covered with building paper. Blackboard or rigid

building Styrofoam can also be used. Apply metal lath to studs or backing using treated or galvanized nails or staples on 6” centers. Spread a coat of mortar over the lath. Lath should wrap corners, not cut within 6” of corner.

• Wood siding: This surface should be covered with 30# felt or building paper to conform to local code. Then nail the lath to the surface. Apply lath right to left, top to bottom, to prevent the trowel from hanging on overlapped lath when mortar is ap-plied. Wrap your corners. Spread mortar from left to right if you are right handed, reverse this process if you are left handed.

• Metal siding: If the metal has deep ridges in it, apply a solid backing over it before applying the lath.• Preformed Concrete Walls: Stone can be applied to these walls. A concrete bonding agent must be used on these types of

walls. Follow the manufacturer recommendations to apply the bonding agent. Solid poured concrete walls may have release on them that prevents mortar from bonding. Lath should be applied in this case.

Page 33: TRADITIONAL STONE - Wild Country Studios | Let Your ... · M-ROCK Traditional Stone. ... Appalachian 8pak - This is an 8 square ft. increment. ... likely ship in a crate container

2. Can M-ROCK Stone be installed around a fireplace?Yes - M-Rock Stone is predominantly comprised of aggregate and concrete. It can be installed as a facade to fireplaces, outdoor grilling areas, and behind stoves. It is recommended the product is at least 18” away from any direct flame.

3. Can M-ROCK Stone be used inside a pool or fountain project? It is not recommended for use below the water line in a pool, a fountain, or below grade. You can however use it to face exterior walls of pools and fountains. Chlorine and other harsh chemicals used in swimming pools can cause damage to the stone and its color. Flashing, water proofing, and the use of a reputable penetrable sealer can be used to deter any damage to the stone.

M-ROCK StoneMAINTENANCE FOR ALL OUR STONE AND BRICK VENEERS

CLEANING

On occasion, washing to remove surface debris or dust may be required. For dirt, dust and other particle removal:

• Gentle scrubbing of the stones surface with a dry soft bristle brush is sufficient to remove dirt or other debris.• If necessary use a solution of liquid dish detergent and water. Make sure the detergent does not contain any bleach or other

harsh chemicals. Gently scrub with soft bristle brush and detergent/water solution. Rinse well with clean water.• If a stronger cleaning agent is necessary, try a granulated mild detergent mixed with water or mix a solution of (no more

than) one part white vinegar to five parts water. • Rinse with clean water to remove any solution that might remain on the surface. • Do Not attempt to clean M-ROCK Stone with acid cleaners, bleach, paint remover or any other type of concrete cleaner.• Do Not use wire brushes on M-ROCK Stone

EFFLORESCENCE

When efflorescence occurs, as it does with many masonry products, it is usually the result of moisture migration through the masonry substrate. Once the moisture is on the masonry surface, it evaporates, depositing dissolved salts in the form of efflorescence. Efflorescence will disappear naturally over time as long as the source of the moisture is controlled or eliminated. If you wish to clean off efflorescence, use the following instructions:

• Efflorescence may be removed with a solution of 1 part white, distilled vinegar to 6 parts water. Gently scrub using a soft bristle brush and vinegar/ water solution. Rinse well with clean water.

SEALERS / PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS

Protecting M-ROCK Stone is not necessary, however, it is recommended in certain applications such as “at grade”, where mud may splash onto the stone or on wood-burning fireplaces, which are exposed to smoke and soot.

• Penetrating stone sealers is recommended for most veneer stone and masonry sealing applications. This type of sealer pen-etrates deep into the surface, sealing out water and contaminates. Penetrating stone sealers do not form a film or change the look of the surface. These are very effective, long lasting and offer easy maintenance. This sealant only needs maintenance about every 5 years.

• A sealer, or protective treatment, will provide added protection and usually be easier to clean if the surface becomes dirty. If you decide to seal your stone veneer, use only a silane or siloxane-based penetrating, breathable masonry sealer. Please note that you should test a small area beforehand because a sealer may affect stone color.

• It is always recommended that you test any sealer you intend to use on a small area to ensure compatibility.
