Brylor Ranch “TradiTion WiTh a ViSion”Angus Female Sale!!

Big changes around Brylor Ranch in 2012! Deloy turned 13 this summer... Sherry and Iare not sure we are ready yet to be parents of a “teenager”! We’re getting a steer for himthis fall to be in 4-H. Erica has been involved with Silver Reins 4-H Club and has won sev-eral red ribbons in several different horse shows with her Welsh mare, Merry Legs. Rowanwill be starting pre-school in September and Isabella has scars on her forehead from the ef-fects of being the youngest child of 4!! Lots of camping with the kids and swimming andbaseball and weddings. Congratulations to Ryan & Cassie Dorran on their big day - I partic-ularly liked Steve Dorran’s speech when he thanked Cassie for saying “yes” to Ryan’s pro-posal... twice! Also our “oldest daughter”, Katie Leys is now married to Jordan Deeg. Sherryand I were very honored to be asked to emcee their special day. We liked how Katie’s dad,Allan, and Jordan’s dad, Roger, both acknowledged us and how much Katie has meant tous over the years. And I think it’s all good how Roger referred to me as the “Spiritual

Leader” of the Red Angus movement in Canada!More news on the cattle front now, though... we bought the entire Get-A-Long cow herd, 130 in

all - cows, bred heifers and heifer calves. Dennis & Shelly will have one last group of bull calves tosell in 2013. The cows with heifer calves and the bred heifers arrived at Brylor Ranch in late May.

That was a pretty neat day around here but I am sure it was a little tough on the peo-ple in Wetaskiwin. Dennis and Shelly, you can both be very proud of your herd ofcows you put together over the last 35 years. I know Sherry and I and the kids arevery happy to have them! They will be a welcome addition to our existing cowherd.We’ll be calving 275 head out now in January/February and May/June - half andhalf. We’ve already had lots of traffic to come view these “new”cows.

All of the “Y” Get-A-Long bred heifers are in the sale today, none held back. Wefelt it would be a fitting tribute to Dennis and his wife and their program to offer allthis age group as it will be the last time ever to buy a female with the GAL prefixagain in volume of this sort. It’s kind of like a Hayshaker in Fort Macleod... except Iown these females now and will offer them to you on September 29th. I can’t letthem all go, so some will be paired lots - buyer’s first choice and we retain the other.

We also offer in this sale the last 50+ bred heifers from Rick & Deb Cones ofRingstead Ranch. They have been breeding these cattle since 1993 and haveamassed a group second to none as well. All were A.I.’ed once and now sell safe incalf to that mating or they are not here. I remember when this “new guy” came toour “Tradition With A Vision” in 1997 and bought five bred heifers that day ... all atthe top end of the sale. Come to Fort Macleod Auction on September 29th and seeRick’s efforts for nearly 20 years have shown. Both Black and Red heifers on offer.By the way, Rick had purchased all of the Black Get-A-Long cows a few years back.

The other thing I wanted to mention happening this summer was that we finallygot to show our cows to our very good friend from Iowa, Mr. Kyle Gilchrist. He tookthree days out of his very busy schedule of managing and auctioneering his U.S.sales and came to spend time with Sherry and I. You talk about a love of thebreed... he’s got Red Angus blood flowing through his veins!

After all this time, Mulberry stands alone at the top of the mountain as one of thegreatest, if not “the greatest” Red Angus sire in the world! He is on top of the per-formance world as he is in the top 1% for Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Car-cass Weight and Total Maternal. Longevity is no problem either as he is still kickin’(and bustin’ down nearly every plank fence he can find!). What a fantastic new photo we finally got of this incredible Hobo son. Grant Rol-ston and I chased this bull all over the pasture he was in in August (with 30 cows) toget it. He is amazingly easy fleshing, has a great temperament and calves so wellon heifers too. His calves all possess that superior dark color that is so much in de-mand. His first daughter to sell brought $4800 in Red Round-up last fall from Lucky7 Red Angus. After buying the entire Get-A-Long herd this February, we decided to buy Wanderback from Diamond K in Maple Creek. They bought him in the Denver Sale in 2012for $16,000. Here’s a herd bull who will go down as a very under appreciated sire for what hecould do! His first daughters are milking now and have beautiful udders and aredoing a first class job. He has had several sons sell in our bull sale and the buyers eat ‘em up. Onewas our second high seller at $25,000 this spring to Red Top. Another went com-mercially at $11,500 to Blue Ridge Colony. We have never used an A.I. sire on our heifers that has done as much for themas Waves has! His first set of calves blow me away! They were very easy calvingand have a look and style to them like no other. Waves was our high seller in 2011 and has seen limited use in other programsbecause of the extremely short supply of semen we have. The last two summers insouthern Kansas have not been kind to him in the semen collecting department. Hesettles cows fine naturally and we did get a small amount of semen before he leftCanada in May of 2011. Check out his new proof of EPD’s. We could have done this Lot of heifers the traditional method of just selectingone to go to town and sell her outright... but that’s just not me! You wouldn’t get thewhole effect of just how good this group of full sisters is with just one or two in thesale. You notice we just about got all seven to stand perfectly for their family photobut not quite! Sort of reminds me of another group of four full sibs (the two leggedkind with lots of energy that live on Brylor Ranch as well). Dennis supported a lot of people in the cow business at a lot of the sales he at-tended. He bought the dam of this Hitch daughter at a sale in Olds that Gloria wasat in 2008. 125T was a good combination of genetics of the Smash sire and the$20,000 Dividend 6K bull.

The Get-A-Long Stock Farm entire cow herd andbred heifers were sold to Brylor Ranches, Bryan andSherry Mackenzie and family, in February, 2012. Thankyou very much as our 35 years of Get-A-Long have beentotally rewarding. We are left with five herd sires in part-nership with Brox Stock Farm, the Boyd Monea family, avery integral part of making Get-A-Long a householdname. Bryan made a very lucrative offer, I told him, “Don’tgo away!” and four days later it was a done deal. Thankyou again!!

In the Brylor Event this year all of our pen of bredheifers are included - many paired together, retained in-terests in others. They indeed are a nice group and jour-neyed well to Pincher Creek. The remainder of the cowswith bull calves will travel south this fall leaving us withembryos that need to be used.

FRIENDS & FELLOW BREEDERS;

Well, it has been almost 20 years since we bought our firstRed Angus cows from the OH Ranch. Things really started to takeoff a few years later with the purchase of the Bust’n bull from SSSand daughters of Brylor’s famous 31A and 40X cows at the TWAVsale. It seems fitting therefore, that the last time we sell somepurebred Angus will be at the same TWAV sale, only 15 years later.

For those of you that don’t know, we sold our purebred cowherd to One Earth Farms last year. They also are leasing ourSaskatchewan ranch, continuing to produce purebred bulls for theirown large cow herd. As part of that deal, we retained the yearlingreplacement heifers. Since they were coming out of a May/Junecalving program, we decided to hold them over and sell them aslong yearlings this year. All the heifers on offer have been AI’d onlyand not turned with clean up bulls. Those that did not catch to theirAI, will be retained by Ringstead to form the nucleus of a smallcommercial herd at the Cayley Alberta ranch.

These heifers come from a purebred cow herd that pro-duced 150 saleable two year old bulls each year. Theycalved on grass, for the most part unassisted, and onlycame home once a year for preg checking etc. We focusedheavily on feet, udders and performance in our cow herd.As a result, we developed a loyal group of customers overthe years with very few “warranty calls” on bulls sold.These heifers might not produce show animals for the newbuyers, however they come from solid cow families and willproduce good bulls that you as a breeder can have confi-dence in selling to your customers.

We have enjoyed the cattle business over the last 20years. In our careers, Deb and I have been involved in theoil and gas, real estate and ranching industries. Without adoubt, ranchers are the most hard working, honest, nicestpeople that we have had the pleasure to meet and do busi-ness with. We have also had some great employees at theranch that were committed and took tremendous pride inbuilding Ringstead’s cow herd.
