Sue Dorland, DVM

Welcome to the 2019 OVMA Conference and Trade Show! I’m thrilled to experience this year’s incredible event with you – it’s a great opportunity to meet veterinary professionals from across the country, catch up with old colleagues and classmates, learn from industry leaders, and discover the newest veterinary products and services.

The conference and trade show improve each year. At this year’s event, we’re proud to offer more than 105 hours of quality continuing education, several special events and programs, as well as the largest veterinary trade show in Canada, showcasing more than 140 exhibits.

With sessions ranging in topics from veterinary medicine to practice management, and fun, interactive events such as our Exhibit Hall Socials, we’ve packed this conference with activities for everyone to enjoy. As you make your way through the week, remember to visit the OVMA Member Resource Centre in the Exhibit Hall to meet our staff, have your questions answered and learn more about the benefits of being an OVMA member. If you need a break from your full schedule, stop by one of our Zen Zone meditation or yoga classes to relax and refresh your body and mind.

The OVMA Conference and Trade Show app is a valuable tool to help you organize your week. Through the app, you can browse sessions, create your own schedule, view the venue map and even instant message colleagues. You can also complete a survey for each session you attend, which will help us make future conferences that much better. To help you stay connected and maximize the app’s features, we’re pleased to offer free wi-fi in the conference venue. To download the free app, visit your device’s app store.

If you’re from out of town and looking to take in some of the attractions that Toronto has to offer, turn to page 10 for some great suggestions on activities, restaurants and more. Toronto’s energy can’t be beat – enjoy it while you’re here!

Throughout the week, we’ll be engaging with conference-goers online. We encourage you to join the conversation and tell us about your experience by using the hashtag #OVMA2019.

We’re so excited to present you with the 2019 OVMA Conference and Trade Show – I hope you enjoy the week!

FRIDAYGolden Life Membership Award – Dr. Michael Vern Ritter

Golden Life Membership Award – Dr. James Mantle

SATURDAYRising Star Award – Dr. Christian Heyerhoff

Award of Merit – Dr. Scott Bainbridge

Associate of the Year Award Glenys Hughes, DVM

Dr. Glenys Hughes joined the Merivale Cat Hospital team in 2002, after obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Guelph in 1984, achieving her Master of Science from Memorial University of

Newfoundland in 1990 and graduating from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 1994. It was here that Dr. Hughes built her reputation for outstanding patient care and client support. Known for her meticulous attention to detail and compassionate nature, Dr. Hughes has dedicated her career to providing excellence in feline medicine.

As an active volunteer and advocate for animal welfare, Dr. Hughes has been commended for going above and beyond to enhance the welfare of animals in the Ottawa region. In 2013, she was presented with the Dr. James Hutchinson Animal Welfare Award for saving the lives of animals as a volunteer. Dr. Hughes volunteers for the Ottawa Humane Society and the Community Veterinary Outreach program, providing free medical care to animals in need and running seminars for residents on feline behaviour and senior cat care. Dr. Hughes has also coordinated several “Night Owl” volunteer evenings—a high-volume spay and neuter event—with the entire Merivale Cat Hospital team.

As a role model to her colleagues and the numerous externship students she mentors from across the world, Dr. Hughes is seen as the best the profession has to offer. As her colleague Dr. Susan Kilborn says, “Dr. Hughes embodies the full package within our profession: a sincere and authentic mentor, compassion, self-improvement, giving of oneself to the community, and professional excellence.”

Award of Merit Scott Bainbridge, DVM

Dr. Scott Bainbridge graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1999 and holds an Honors Bachelor of Science in Animal Behaviour from the University of Toronto. Within a year of graduating, Dr. Bainbridge co-founded his first practice, Queen

West Animal Hospital, and then opened Dundas West Animal Hospital in 2008. He is trained in veterinary acupuncture, has an interest in both veterinary ophthalmology and nutrition, and has recently focused on the emerging area of stem cell medicine, which he’s used to treat senior pets with inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis and hip dysplasia.

Over the years, Dr. Bainbridge has worked closely with numerous animal rescue organizations, started his own adoption program, and volunteered for Sistering, a local women’s shelter that offers free veterinary care for pets of women who’ve left abusive households. In 2012, Dr. Bainbridge and his wife travelled to Australia to open Future Vets Kids Camp, a first-of-its-kind program that teaches children about veterinary medicine. More recently, Dr. Bainbridge has been working on organizing a permanent spay/neuter clinic for stray dogs near his home away from home, Ecuador.

In addition, Dr. Bainbridge serves on the Ontario Veterinary College’s Interview Board for the Multiple Mini Interview Committee and has appeared on several shows, including Doctor in House, Steven and Chris, CP24’s Animal House Calls and, most recently, on Animal Planet’s Dog’s Best Friend.

Described as having an unwavering commitment to the veterinary industry and animal welfare, Dr. Bainbridge’s colleagues see him as a force of nature who continues to reinvent veterinary medicine.

OVMA AWARDS

Each year, OVMA honours the stars of the veterinary profession for going above and beyond the call of duty and inspiring others to do the same. This year’s awards will be presented each morning prior to the morning plenary sessions:

Page 7: &TRADESHO W · 4-H members pursue careers in the veterinary industry. He’s also been a member of the Optimist Club of Lindsay since 1980 and has served in each position on the Board

Golden Life Membership Award James Mantle, DVM

Shortly after graduating from the University of Guelph in 1978, Dr. James Mantle began practicing at the Lindsay Animal Clinic, a mixed animal veterinary clinic in Lindsay, Ont. In 1979, Dr. Mantle entered into a partnership with the late A. F.

(Frank) Codlin and F. Nelson Lester and has carried on the practice since their respective retirements in 1990 and 2005. Focusing on the practice’s large animal clients, Dr. Mantle spent his 40-year career providing quality care to each of his patients.

As owner of the practice, Dr. Mantle made a lasting impact on his staff. Dr. Amie Elliott, a former colleague of Dr. Mantle, describes him as “always being a strong supporter of his staff, providing a constant source of knowledge and advice on both clinical and non-clinical matters, and fostering an environment that enables them to flourish as veterinary practitioners.”

Throughout his career, Dr. Mantle also mentored countless youth and students. For over 31 years, he volunteered with 4-H Ontario as a local board member and as a club leader for a Veterinary Science Club, teaching rural youth about veterinary medicine and helping former 4-H members pursue careers in the veterinary industry. He’s also been a member of the Optimist Club of Lindsay since 1980 and has served in each position on the Board of Directors.

In addition, Dr. Mantle has hosted local high school co-op students annually for over 25 years and has hosted externship students from Ontario, New Zealand, Germany, Russia and Spain. Dr Mantle has also been a supporter of the Lindsay Central Exhibition, both as a sponsor and an associate director.

In the words of his former colleague, Dr. Sarah Rae, “Dr. Mantle has truly devoted his life to veterinary medicine. If he was able, he would still be carrying his pager and driving around the countryside.”

Golden Life Membership Award Michael Vern Ritter, DVM

In 1978, Dr. Michael Vern Ritter graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) and moved to New Hamburg, Ont. with his wife, Jenny. For the past 40 years, Dr. Ritter has practiced veterinary medicine at the New Hamburg Veterinary Clinic, as

well as volunteered for his community, mentored countless youth, and has been an active member of his church.

Seen as a selfless leader in the veterinary industry, Dr. Ritter is described as being an “exemplar of everything people imagine a veterinarian to be; kind, caring, compassionate, knowledgeable and available at any time to help people and their animals.”

As a clinic owner, Dr. Ritter treated his employees like family, making sure each staff member, high school co-op,

externship, VSTEP students (a program for internationally-trained veterinarians), and newcomer veterinarians seeking accreditation, felt welcome, safe and valued. He continually invested, encouraged, and guided his employees through their careers, while ensuring an excellent work-life balance.

In his personal time, Dr. Ritter, along with his wife, helped establish Community Link Empowered Against Narcotics (CLEAN). They volunteered their time for 10 years, providing emotional support to parents with family drug issues throughout Southwestern Ontario. They also provided many educational presentations and literature to local schools, service clubs and churches. In addition to his work with CLEAN, Dr. Ritter volunteered as a 4H Club Leader and with the New Hamburg Fall Fair for over 25 years, receiving the Ontario Volunteer Service Award.

As his former colleague Dr. Anne Marie Hunter says, “When I think of Dr. Mike, a few words come to mind: compassionate, helpful, storyteller, patient, hard-working, family-driven, generous, charitable, thoughtful and never too busy to take an extra moment to show that he cares.”

Outstanding Veterinarian Award Mark Gemmill, DVM

Dr. Mark Gemmill began a career as a dairy farmer after graduating from agriculture college in 1984. Three years later, he returned to the University of Guelph and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1993. In 2000, Dr. Gemmill became a

partner of the Cornell Animal Hospital in Guelph, Ont., and eventually became sole owner in 2003.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Gemmill has made extraordinary contributions to the veterinary profession, serving on the OVMA Board for 17 years, with five years on the Executive Committee and as the association’s President in 2015. Dr. Gemmill also represented OVMA on the VSTEP Board of Directors for 12 years, as well as served on OVMA’s pet insurance program and public relations task forces. In addition, Dr. Gemmill was a founding member of the Farley Foundation’s Board of Directors, serving on the board for 14 years, five of which he was President.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gemmill has supported a variety of local causes, and in the last five years has started donating all the rebate proceeds from pharmaceutical and pet food companies to charity. He has been actively involved in Farley Foundation fundraising events, such as the OVMA Golf Tournament, Ride for Farley, and Fundraise for Farley Month, and currently volunteers with Veterinary Community Outreach, an organization that offers free veterinary care for pets of marginalized individuals.

Dr. Gemmill also sponsors a local golf tournament put on by “Fathers Remembered by Daughters”, a charity that supports and raises money for Hospice Wellington. When speaking of Dr. Gemmill, Patricia Godin, founder of the charity, says "Compassion, empathy and integrity are not things learned in vet school but, rather, are qualities that are organic and true to who Dr. Mark Gemmill is – my veterinarian and friend for over 19 years. He deserves this

distinguished honour for not only taking exemplary care of our pets but, also, for taking care of his clients and being a proud supporter of non-profit groups in our community."

Additionally, Dr. Gemmill regularly mentors future veterinarians in his practice, one of which is now his Associate.

Rising Star Award Christian Heyerhoff, DVM

After obtaining his degree in animal biology from the University of Guelph in 2010, Dr. Heyerhoff travelled to Ireland to study veterinary medicine at University College Dublin, where he graduated in 2015. From there, Dr. Heyerhoff participated in the

Summer Dairy Institute at Cornell University and eventually joined the Prescott Animal Hospital/Rideau-St. Lawrence Veterinary Services team, practicing both small and large animal medicine.

Described as having “a superior aptitude for the art and science of veterinary medicine,” by his colleague Dr. Henry Ceelen, Dr. Heyerhoff goes above and beyond for his clients, focusing his attention on their concerns and quickly diagnosing his patients’ complex medical problems.

Valuing mentorship, Dr. Heyerhoff participates in a young veterinarian group with Boehrlnger-Ingelheim, where he works with veterinarians with less experience, assisting them with difficult cases and providing them with non-judgemental feedback and suggestions.

Dr. Heyerhoff’s interests lie in large animal medicine and surgery with a special interest in dairy herd health and preventative medicine. Handling numerous large animal patients and herds, Dr. Heyerhoff ensures he takes his time to help clients understand every detail of their animal’s case.

One of his long-time clients, Koren Manneck, says “Dr. Heyerhoff’s integrity, professionalism and care have played a significant role in the success we have achieved in our herds. Despite his young age, his depth of knowledge and experience is ever present. We take great comfort in knowing that our livestock is receiving the highest standing of care possible under Dr. Heyerhoff’s care.”

The key to career satisfaction is to actively shape your career path as you transition through the Early, Middle and Later Year phases of career development. Sometimes in the midst of this marathon, we start to recognize that, although we are working hard, we still feel unhappy and unfulfilled. Dr. Quinn draws on his journey of discovery of Great Ape conservation in the rainforests of Africa and Indonesia as well as concepts from physician leaders in psychiatry to present a thought-provoking discussion of embracing altruism and tuning into the strengths, resilience, talent and passion of who we already are.

Dr. Richard Quinn is a 1981 graduate of OVC and obtained ACVO board certification in 1996. Following 5 years in academia teaching undergraduate veterinary students, residents and graduate students, he returned to private practice, establishing the Veterinary Eye Specialists in Denfield, ON. He has lectured across Canada and Internationally. Dr. Quinn serves on both the Canadian and global boards of the Jane Goodall Institute; and is the Founding Director of Docs4GreatApes – an organization developed to improve the health of Great Ape populations through education. An avid wildlife photographer, he has trekked the rainforests of Africa and Indonesia photographing Great Apes.

Newer concepts are on the horizon and may provide a glimmer of hope for residual disease.

RADIOLOGY

ROOM: Salon C

Eric Herrgesell, DVM, DACVR

William Hornof, DVM, MS, DACVR

Radiology is an inexact science. These sessions are designed to introduce participants to separating identification of the radiographic findings (facts) from formulation of the diagnosis. Emphasis will be placed on the underlying pathophysiology leading to a radiographic finding, rather than showing examples of how disease “XXXX” looks. Emphasis will also be placed on how those finding are then used to formulate a list a possible diagnoses.

9:15 – 11:45 a.m. Radiography Interpretation of the Thorax in Dogs and CatsThe first hour is a conventional radiology lecture, but again focused on familiarizing the audience with terminology used to describe thoracic findings, rather than diagnoses. The second hour will focus on selected known cases of thoracic diseases, which will be used to engage the audience in interactive sessions and emphasize the importance of correctly identifying radiographic changes. Once the audience has come to consensus on the findings, the audience will be crowd sourced to combine the findings with the history and physical exam findings to come to consensus on differentials and rule outs and formulate a plan. Once a consensus is reached, the outcome will then be disclosed and discussed.

1:15 – 3:30 p.m.Radiography Interpretation of the Abdomen in Dogs and CatsThe first hour is a conventional lecture, but again focused on terminology used to describe abdominal finding rather than diagnoses. The second hour will focus on selected know cases of abdominal diseases, which will be used to engage the audience in interactive sessions and emphasize the importance of correctly identifying radiographic changes. Once the audience has come to consensus on the findings, the audience will be crowd sourced to combine the findings with the history and physical exam findings to come to consensus on differentials and rule outs and formulate a plan. Once consensus is reached, the outcome will then be disclosed and discussed.

4:00 – 5:00 p.m.Thoracic/Abdominal Case StudiesCases with disease of either the thorax, abdomen, or both will be used to engage the audience in interactive sessions following the same plan. The Radiology lectures are Sponsored by: Antech Diagnostics

Pets are part of the family and consequently veterinarians are part of the family’s healthcare team. Zoonotic disease exposure is an inherent risk of pet ownership. With increased public awareness of zoonotic diseases, veterinarians need to be able to address client and physician concerns (both real and perceived) and provide appropriate counseling to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease transmission.

This Focus on Infection Program will address important zoonotic disease issues pertaining to household pets, sometimes combining infectious disease specialists from both veterinary and human medicine.

Coffee breaks, daily luncheon desserts and evening receptions hosted in the exhibit hall will provide a relaxed atmosphere to meet with colleagues and your exhibitors on a less formal basis.

Representatives from non-exhibiting companies will not be issued passes unless registered with an exhibiting company. This policy is in place to protect the interests of our exhibiting companies. Requests for passes made by a sponsoring company will not be unreasonably withheld.

Lunchtime Exhibit Hall DrawsEach day, delegates visiting the Exhibit Hall over the lunch break will be entered in a special daily draw for $500. These draws will take place at 12:45 p.m. and you must be in the Exhibit Hall to win!

Exhibit Hall SocialsNeed more time in the exhibit hall? Take advantage of these two designated blocks of time to network with the exhibiting companies. The OVMA Conference not only offers great continuing education, it is also a great opportunity to catch up with former classmates, meet colleagues and make new friends.
