The Generation Gap — Who’s Running Your Business?

Many companies today have multiple generations working in the business and in many cases, running the business. The question becomes, who makes the decisions and does everyone agree? Generational differences in and of themselves, can really cause problems. Add how these different generations approach operations, ownership (or transfer of ownership), treatment of profits (reinvest or pay out)- plus family dynamics - and the mix can be extremely frustrating and often times hinder profitabil ity. This training session wil l examine generational differences relating to operating and managing businesses and how to capitalize on the positives of each and reduce the negatives. The goal: to make running the family business fun again and reduce stress levels while maximizing profitabil ity.

Tamera Kovacs came to Propane Resources’ consulting team in 1998. She focuses on financial consulting, propane business valuations, business planning and merger / acquisition services. She is a frequent contributor to industry publications. Before joining Propane Resources, Kovacs, who holds a BS and an MBA, spent eight years in business and manufacturing.

Selling An Option — To YourselfOptions on propane have proven to be appealing to risk managers for one main reason – an option provides financial protection when the market goes against you, while also giving participation in the upside when the market goes your way. Unfortunately, propane options are rarely traded in volumes sufficient to provide the high level of l iquidity found in larger markets such as crude oil and option buyers who are distant from Mt. Belvieu or Conway may face unpredictable basis risk.

A potential solution can be found in an Excel-based technique called option Delta hedging. This presentation wil l demonstrate how an option-like hedge can be created in any local market for any volume desired – providing answers to the challenges of option ‘markup,’ option basis risk, or simple lack of availabil ity.

Craig Trotter began his career as an information systems consultant in the uti l it ies industry. After obtaining an MBA, he worked for five years in the natural gas uti l it ies distribution business. In 2001, Craig joined the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) wholesale business - trading derivatives and options in the propane markets. Today, Craig continues to educate in the area of energy risk management, with the

goal of providing in-depth options expertise to a wider audience.
