A glance at the company’s ports of call indicates an impressive list worldwide. The U.S. services call at Houston and other Gulf, South Atlantic and North Atlantic ports. FromVenezuela, the line also serves a European trade, Mediterrean countries, the Far East, and other Latin American/Caribbean countries. For example, the C.A.V.N. flag in the European service can be found at the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Bremen, LeHavre, and Bilbao. The Mediterrean service calls at Genoa, Naples, Leghorn, Marseilles, Cadiz, Valencia, Barcelona, and Malaga, and also calls at Glasgow and Liverpool in the U.K. and Saint John, Canada, and Searsport, Maine. On the other side of the world the C.A.V.N. logo is a familiar sight at Chiba, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Kobe in Japan; Keelung and Kaohsiung in Taiwan, Singapore, Hang Kong, and Port Kelang in Malaysia. Venezuela is blessed with an abundance of deel~water ports and the Venezuelan Line provides a vital service to the entire roster: La Guaira (Caracas), Puerto Cabello, Maracaibo, Puerto LaCruz, E1 Guamache, Guanta, Mantanzas, Palua, and Puerto Ordaz. All are modern ports with the newest terminal equipment and are growing in importance in Central and South Tworolls of newsprint being lifted on board delivery in Venezuela. C.A.V.N. also has a presence in Curacao, Georgetown, Guyana; Paramaribo in Surinam, Port of Spain, Trinidad, and the Colombian ports of Santa Marta, Barranquilla, and Cartagena. C.A.V.N.’s vessels carry the goods from its own hemisphere to these far- flung trading partners, while bringing home return cargo to help fuel the needs and the economies of Venezuela and its neighbors. U.S.A. SERVICE IS LARGEST The U.S.A. services are the largest, accounting for half the voyages, half of the ocean mileage-- 400 voyages and 2.2 million miles in 1978 alone. Efficiency in cargo handling, therefore, is vital in these trades. The new ships that serve the Gulf are examplesof this. The M. V. ZULIA, LARA, in this special rig ore the CARABOBO for GUARICO, and CARABOBO which fly the distinctive C.A.V.N. blue and yellow ensign over the Port of Houston are breakbulk ships designed to have the broadest latitude in cargo efficiency. Displacing some 25,000 tons each, their vessel flexibility is impressive: Each has a bale capacity of 800,000 cubic feet; five reefer compartments of 62,000 cubic feet with a 1,500-ton capacity; liquid bulk tanks carry some 17,000 cubic feet, nearly 400 tons or 3,000 barrels; and, in addition, each vessel can carry 144 20-foot containers or equivalents. They have a service speed of 16.4 knots. The GUARICO is the pride of the company with a 100-ton self-contained heavy-lift boom. The other three ships have 60-ton heavy-lift cranes. SEABEE. THE ADVANTAGESARE AS BIG AS THE SYSTEM.

The SEABEE system is a result of the Lykesconcept that cargo should be kept in motionfrom the moment it leaves its point of origin toits final destination. And it should moverapidly, economically and safely.SpeedThe three SEABEE ocean carriers are each875’ in length and have a cruising speed of20 knots. This enables them to transit, forexample, New Orleans to Rotterdam in12 days.

ReachIf an inland river port in the U.S. or NorthernEurope can be reached by barge, then it

becomes a seaport for SEABEE. In fact, thereare a total of seventeen major points in theU.S. and North Europe which can be served bythe SEABEE barge system. Add to this theintermodal and mini-bridge systems of rail andtruck or containers, and virtually any place is apoint of origin or destination for SEABEE.VersatilityNo ocean transportation system can matchthe cargo-carrying versatility of LykesSEABEE. Three types of barges: standard

hopper, flat deck and refrigerator are a part ofthe system today. The flat deck is particularlysuited to heavy lifts and oversJzes, having adeck capacity of 8000 pounds per squarefoot. The reefer barges regularly keep citrusfruit in field-fresh condition from the U.S.Gulf to Europe. And the spacious deck of thecarrier will accept over-sizes, heavy lifts andpre-fabs impossible to ship before SEABEE.
