MASSEY-HARRIS MODEL 30 AND MODEL 33

The Massey-Harris Company of Canada, unlike other companies, sold tractors until 1938 that

were manufactured from designs that were bought from other companies. Most famous was the

Massey-Harris purchase of the Wallis tractor in 1928 from the 1. 1. Case Works. With the Wallis

tractor and factory located in the United States the Canadian company now had a tractor design

and U-frame that was to be characteristic of Massey-Harris until 1938. The company still did not

have an engine of their own, but rather depended on power units purchased from other

companies. Chrysler six cylinder engines and Continental engines were used to power the M-H

81, 102, 201, 202 and 203.

The Massey-Harris 30 was introduced in 1946, and remained in production until 1953. It is

estimated about 32,400 were manufactured The Model 33 replaced the 30 in 1953. Production

figures indicate about 54 of the Model 33 tractors were made in 1952. The Model 33 remained in

production for the following three years, or until 1956. Only about 11,000 M-H Model 33 were

manufactured. It is of interest to note that the Model 33 became available the same year, i. e.,

1953 that Massey-Harris and Ferguson merged and adopted the name Massey-Harris-Ferguson.

This name was to continue until 1958 when Harris was dropped and the company name became

Massey-Ferguson

The M-H Model 30 was powered by a Red Seal Continental four cylinder engine with a

3-7/16 by 4-3/8 inch bore and stroke. It recorded 20.6 HP on the drawbar. The tractor weighed

about 3,600 lbs. and operated at 1500 RPM. It had the twin power feature that produced 1800

RPM on the belt. Fuel efficiency was rated at about 11.09 HP hours per gallon of gasoline.

The Model 33 was powered by Massey-Harris's own four cylinder 201 CID engine with a

3-5/8 by 4-7/8 inch bore and stroke. It tested 23.2 HP on the drawbar. The tractor weighed 5,191

Ibs. and also operated at 1500 RPM. Fuel efficiency was slightly less than the Model 30, reaching

10.89 HP hours per gallon of gasoline.

Both models were smooth running, and delivered snappy performance. The five speed

transmission offered a suitable gear for every operation.
