IPADS AND E-ASSESSMENTImpact on efficiency and convenience
PROJECT AIMS
Aim: to compare and contrast the use of the Ipad for e- feedback across a range of assessment tasks for students on a range of modules.
Modules are taken as part of either a pre-registration midwifery degree programme or a post-registration nursing degree programme or as stand alone CPD.
OBJECTIVES
To assess the impact of the use of the Ipad on efficiency (i.e. little wasted effort) of the assessment feedback process when compared to traditional methods of feedback
To assess the impact of the use of the Ipad in terms of convenience (ease of use) when compared to traditional methods of feedback

RESULTS: E ASSESSMENT – GENERALPOSITIVE
No need to attend to submit Developmental learning from use of Turnitin Opportunities to submit drafts via OASIS+ Easy access to submitted work as moderator No need to go to student office The 10, weekly on-line submissions created
a vibrancy in the classroom as students spoke about their learning and what they had submitted on each log.
The 10 weekly logs reduced student drop out.
RESULTS: E ASSESSMENT – GENERALNEGATIVE
Not it easy to read the feedback sheets. I had to request that the feedback be re-
produced on marking sheets where I could clearly see what mark was been given to each of the marking criteria. This delay had a knock on effect of delaying feedback to students.
THE USE OF THE IPAD – USER COMMENTS
Ability to use a drop box and down load scripts on to the IPAD made it easier to read long documents on screen .
Also then able to have Audacity and marking criteria on lap top but then issues around portability
Need 3G rather than wifi. Could not use anywhere other than home or on Hendon Campus
No flash so no Turnitin access on IPAD
COMMENTS CONT’D
It took a long time to get to grips with Needed mini tutorial, download an apple
account and upload apps including Apple’s version of Word.
IPAD use could make e-assessment a more mobile process but it is worth considering the 3G i-pads.
The i-pad has a very easy to read screen, a good back light and splits pages into manageable, readable sections.
Training would definitely be needed by anyone new to apple.
COMMENT’S CONT’D
I did not find the Ipad of benefit to me in the assessment process.
It is only beneficial if you have on line access, therefore no benefit to me on University premises I was able to use my normal computer.
Marking off site was not an option as I do not have internet access.
EFFICIENCY?
• Faster access to Oasis+
Time needed to access Turnitin on lap top then download a set of scripts to drop box before opening on the IPAD
Yes No
CONVENIENCE?
• Not needing to carry heavy dissertations/laptop
• E reader function on IPAD convenient
• Could not even use in my office at AW so had to wait until I was at home to use with wifi
• Less convenient for me without internet access off site
Yes No
RECOMMEND?
The 3G i-pad would be highly efficient as it has wide network coverage and is faster than traditional wi-fi’d lap tops.
In terms of health & safety, it would be preferable to the traditional laptop as lighter and the screen brighter.
For reading long docs on screen – implications for dissertation marking
Can’t say, it wasn’t beneficial to me but that isn’t to say it wouldn’t be to others.
