Trace Organic Sample Handling. Edited by E. Reid, John Wley & Sons Limited, pp. xiv, 356, B 30.00. This is a compilation of contributions presented at the 3rd International Bioanalytical Forum held September 1979 at the University of Surrey, and represents to a large degree, the sampling and clean up procedures favored by a number of investigators working with a variety of sample matrices. The contents follow a sectionalized format. The first section contains four papers concerned with “workplace” (i.e., occupa- tional atmospheres) air sampling, and its contents range from general discussions of problems and artifacts to sampling methodology, including passive sampling and dosimetry. Notes and short communications on that general subject follow the more lengthy papers, and in some cases comprise succinct presenta- tions with specific bits of information that will be more valuable to many readers. The second section contains three papers concerned with the analysis of water and effluents, again followed by several pagesof notes and short communications. There are sections concerned with residue type samples, the sampling of biological fluids where considerable attention must be devoted to sample cleanup, to automated sample handing, and a final section devoted to “ensuring reliable results”. There is a wide range of disparity in the novelty and more general applicability of the various procedures, and the analytical expertise demonstrated by the large number of investigators, both in sampling and in later phases (e.g., gas chromatographic separations of theiranalytes). Attendees at most symposia usually find one (and very occassionally two) general papers, and one or two more specialized papers that are of particular interest to that attendee. For most of us, the contents of this offering could be described in a similar manner. Most readers will however find thisa very useful reference for at least some areas of endeavor. The utility is immensely enhanced by the inclusion of a Compound- Type Index and a very complete General Index.

There are sections concerned

with residue type samples, the sampling of biological fluids where considerable attention must be devoted to sample cleanup, to automated sample handing, and a final section devoted to “ensuring reliable results”.
