2012 WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

Since 1995 the Greenville College Lady Panthers have been atop the St Louis Intercollegiate Conference (SLIAC) fourteen times Last season saw us building experience and knowledge as we attempt to position ourselves to take back our spot atop the SLIAC Conference, as well as, improve upon our best performance at the always difficult Midwest Regional

While the season made for many season and lifetime bests, it was a season of frustration for others For the second year in a row, the ladies saw their returning top runner unable to compete due to injury Last year’s Most Valuable Runner, Suzanne Ford saw her season cut short by the same foot injury that sidelined standout Aubree Schreder the previous season On a positive note, junior Rosie Nelson had her best season to date, leading her team and being rewarded with the team’s Most Valuable award

Last year’s Most Improved Jessica Przybylski (Lawrenceville, IL/ Lawrenceville) followed a strong freshman year with another solid season earning the team’s Most Consistent honors A trio of freshman made quick work of their transition to collegiate running and were led by Newcomer of the Year-Molly Works (New Athens, IL /New Athens) Freshman Taylor Thomas (Cherry Valley, IL/Rockford Christian) proved a quick study Thomas earned Most Improved honors after running her first season of cross country and making her transition to the college setting better than expected

Rounding out the top seven included a lineup of underclassmen They were: Bailey Keim (O’Fallon, MO/Francis Howell), Sydney Bennett (North Aurora, IL/Aurora Christian) and Erica Siddle (Belleville, IL/Belleville East)

While the women finished second twice as a team during the season, there is plenty of work to be done and the coaching staff is anxious to see where these young ladies (We lose none to graduation ), and a strong recruiting class can take us

Senior Rose Sanders returns to the lineup after being out of the entire 2012 season She appears to be recovering from double knee surgery and will need to lead our class of young sprinters Teammate Taylor Brunner (Oreana, IL/ Argenta-Oreana) will provide assistance in the throws and multi-events With a year of collegiate competition under their belt, hurdler and Team Newcomer of the Year, Maggie Tarr (New Berlin, IL/ New Berlin), as well as, school record holder Iyeesha Deberry (4x100 Relay) (Decatur, IL/ Macarthur) will need to make the next step in their development to help rebuild the Lady Panthers

We began the season with high expectations having an experienced and seasoned lineup However, we knew the Achilles heel for this season could become the lack of depth If we were to continue our successes we could ill afford the loss of a top runner

Since our entrance into the SLIAC conference, the men have made themselves at home at the top of the SLIAC standings as evidenced by never finishing worse than second at the conference championships That’s correct- the men have been crowned champion 14 times while finishing second 4 times It has been said, “All good things must come to an end ” This fall saw two of our top four runners seasons come to an early conclusion with season ending injuries, and sophomore Ben Barber battled illness for seventy-five percent of the season, running at less than full capacity As a result, for the first time in 19 years the men found themselves finishing fourth at the conference championships

Nathan Young (Morton, IL) surprised his teammates and himself with his best season ever Nate was our top finisher in all but one race garnering the team’s Most Valuable Runner honor He was accompanied by senior team members Ross Baker (St Joseph, IL), Ethan Ford (St Joseph, IL) and Trevor Thompson (Williamsville, IL) in the top seven Freshman Ray Hingson (Dieterich, IL) earned top Newcomer honors after a smooth transition in his first year at the 8K distance

It is the coaching staff’s hope that under the direction of Josh Dees and Bryant Simpson, the team can rebound from its loss of seniors Next year’s success will rely heavily on the development of the team’s young runners, as well as, a strong recruiting class

The Greenville College men’s Track and Field team added another successful season to the record books After winning a total of 12 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) titles over the years, the men fought their way to third place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor NCCAA Championships during the 2012 campaign In addition, the men qualified in five individual events and one relay for the NCAA DIII Championships

Brian White (Harvey, IL/ Thorton) capped his career with his second team MVP award attaining qualifying marks for the fifth time in his NCAA career As a mainstay and leader of our sprints core, White led our 4x100 Relay to their third consecutive NCAA Outdoor meet The quartet’s time of 41 23 was the fifth fastest time recorded in all of Division III prior to the outdoor championships The relay consisted of White, fellow senior Anthony Ambers (Apple Valley, CA/ Apple Valley), Californian Josh Garcia (Oakley, CA/Freedom) and Bruce Gray These men consistently were ranked amongst the best in all of DIII while also winning the NCCAA title and sweeping the 100M by finishing 1-2-3 at the NCCAA Outdoor Championships Look for Juniors Josh Garcia (Oakley, CA/Freedom HS), Bobby Williams (Alton, IL/Alton HS), and Ryan St Hill (St Louis, MO/Jennigs HS) to team with Bruce Gray (Chicago, IL/Leo HS) to lead our sprinters

Freshman sprint standout Bruce Gray had a season to remember After a successful high school career, Gray made the transition to college look easy qualifying for both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships At the indoor championships, Gray earned his first All American award in his young career by way of a 6th place finish in the 60M (6 88) After earning NCCAA Athlete of the Meet honors, he went on to represent the Panthers at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100,200 and 4x100 Bruce finished 9th in the 100 and 6th in the 200(21 11) which shattered the previous school record of 21 35 Gray’s second All

American award put him in elite company as he became only the second athlete in school history to earn two All American awards as a freshman

The men’s throwing squad while fairly young was sprinkled with enough age to make for a season of high expectations Junior Jace Sloan (Hughson, CA/Hughes United) and senior Alex Wilson (Leoti, KS) proved a formidable one-two punch in the javelin with Sloan throwing for a season best (192’10) Sophomore Josh Kuusisto (Show Low, AZ/ Show Low) was named the team’s Most Improved by way of a 30 foot improvement in the men’s hammer to rank him 21st in all of DIII Josh’s school record toss of 184’1 was one inch from qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships Bryan Waugh (Granite City, IL/Granite City) did not disappoint in his first season of competition throwing well in multiple events and earning the team’s Most Inspirational honors

Coree Woltering (Ottawa, IL/ Ottawa Twp), Josh Dees (St Joseph, IL/ St Joseph-Ogden), Bryant Simpson (Fairfield, IL/ Fairfield) and Josh Dees (St Joseph, IL/ St Joseph-Ogden) consistently covered the middle-distance events During the indoor campaign, Woltering broke the mile record covering the distance in 4:18 58 Dees set personal bests in both 800 and the 1500 finishing the season with a bang, running 1:53 79 and 3:57 00, respectively

It looks to be another strong year for the Panthers with the talent they return from last year’s squad coupled with some talented newcomers The coaching staff anticipates Treyvon Manning (Stockton, CA/Amos Alonzo Stagg ),Nic Bergman (Litchfield, IL/ Litchfield), Adam Kammler (Freeburg, IL/Freeburg), and Parker Wray(Nashville, IN/Brown County) to make a smooth transition to the next level of competition
