for the spectators top be quiet,” he said, “or I could be at the green, doing the same thing. Or I could be on the course moving to mark a ball in the rough or in the trees.”

Cobb said the marshals’ duties often rotate day to day.

The 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive is set for Aug. 9-12. It’s the second time the PGA Championship has been held at

the club, which also hosted in 1992. Bellerive has also hosted the Senior PGA Championship in 2013, the BMW Champion-ship in 2008, US Senior Open in 20004 and the US Open in 1065.

Nick Price was the winner of the 1992 PGA Champion-ship. There will be plenty of big names at Bellerive next week as well.

“This is top shelf,” Cobb said of his field marshal gig. “There’s nothing else like it. You’re at the top of the golfing world with the best in the sport. It’s very

exciting.“When I worked the Ryder

Cup, I had goose bumps every day. I was in seventh heaven.”

All this from a guy who worked more than his fair share of high-profile IHSA basketball and baseball events through the years.

“No comparison,” Cobbs said. “I’m not into the autograph col-lecting and such, but I will say that I’ve had a beer or a martini with with some pretty high pro-file golfers.”

Including Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Justin

Thomas and Matt Kucher, as well as celebrity golfers and golf fans including Justin Timber-lake.

“It’s serious business,” Cobbs said, “but they are great people and very down-to-earth and approachable. Of course, I’m wearing the marshal uniform, which probably doesn’t hurt.”

Cobb said marshals foot the bill for the uniform they wear at each tourney.

“(For the PGA Champion-ship) I’m getting a visor and two shirts with the PGA logo on the sleeve, plus a light jacket.

They want us to wear tan or khaki pants.”

He’d like to work more high-profile tournaments.

“My bucket list has the Mas-ters and the British Open on it,” he said. “I’m 75 now, so I’d better get to them sooner than later.”

Cobb said that while he’s a golfer, his golfing skill in no way affects his abilities as a marshal.

“I play golf, but I’m not very good at it,” Cobb said with a chuckle. “But I wasn’t a very good baseball or basketball play-er and I reffed a lot of games.”

Grinter swam for Rettle on the Edwardsville Breakers swim team and for the Montclaire/Water Works Marlins. She also swam at Edwards-ville High School and won the 2016 IHSA state championship in the 100-yard backstroke and was third in the 50 freestyle.

Grinter qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter back-stroke and 50-meter freestyle. That Olympic experience in Omaha set off an eventful summer that culminated with a national championship in the 50-meter backstroke at the YMCA Long Course Nationals Champion-ships in Indianapolis.

And while she said she was mes-merized by the 2016 experience, she was realistic enough to know a spot on the Olympic Team was not likely.

“I hoped to use it as valuable expe-rience and draw on it next time,” Grinter said.

That “next time” is just around the corner.

While Olympic qualifying times for the 2020 Tokyo Games have been announced, Olympic Trials times have not been released yet. However, Grinter is will within the 2016 Trials cuts in three events.

At the Swim Nationals in Califor-nia last week, Grinter posted a time

of 25.40 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle. The 2020 FINA Olympic cuts are 25.51 for a B time entry and 24.77 for an A time. The 2016 Olym-pic cut for the event was 26.19.

In the 100 freestyle, Grinter swam a 57.36 at the Nationals. The Olym-pic cuts are 56.01 for a B entry time and 54.38 for an A time. The 2016 Olympic Trials qualifying time

Grinter posted a 1:02.11 in the 100-meter backstroke. The 2020 Olympic cuts for the event are 1:02.06 for a B cut and 1:00.25 for an “A” time.

Swimmers with “A” Olympic times times are the first priority in Olympic qualifying.

If Grinter should qualify for the Olympics, she would be the first from Edwardsville since Billy Stapleton swam for the US at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

“(Swimming in the Olympic Trials) was an amazing experience,” Grinter said. “I wasn’t sure what to expect and it is definitely something that you have to experience to appreciate it.”

At the Trials, Grinter finished fourth in her heat of the women’s 50-meter freestyle prelims and earlier was sixth in her heat of the 100-meter backstroke. Grinter’s Olympic Trials time of 26.58 seconds in the 50 freestyle was close to her seed time and she swam in the seventh heat – both signs the lanky speedster could

be in for more Olympic fun in four years.

Grinter’s Olympic trials experi-ences catapulted her to outstanding performances at the YMCA Long Course Nationals last summer and at the Short-Course Nationals this past April. She won the 50-meter back-stroke national championship at the long course nationals and swam her way to the 50-yard freestyle national championship at the short-course nationals, where she also finished fourth in the 100 backstroke and sev-enth in the 200 backstroke.

Then came the high school season that saw her her go unbeaten through the regular season and sectional meet and become a double-qualifier at the tough IHSA State Meet, where she won the state backstroke title and got the bronze in the 50 free.

At Tennessee last season, Grinter was a member of the Volunteers 400-yard relay team that finished sixth at the NCAA Women’s Championships in March at Ohio State. She was also on the UT 200-yard freestyle relay team that captured first place at the Southeastern Conference Champion-ships.

“She’s getting better and better at the 100 free,” Rettle said of Grinter. “And her time in the 50 free at the nationals really stands out.

“Her results at the nationals legiti-mize her as someone with a shot at the 2020 U.S. Olympic team.”

Fortschneider of Godfrey while Keyes won her semifinal match with third-seeded Lily Ingram of Jerseyville 8-2.

Chloe Siddle of O’Fallon and Thoman went 2-0 in the Girls 16 Doubles round-robin to win the title. They had wins over Ashleigh Gotway and Jade Witt (9-7), as well as Lily Ingram and Sabrina Ingram of Jerseyville (8-6).

In boys action, second-seeded Wilson Gao of St. Louis defeated top seed Nicholas Strobel of O’Fallon 9-7 to capture the championship of the Boys 14-year-old Singles division. In the semifi-nals, Gao advanced to the final with an 8-4 vic-tory over Stetson Isringhausen of Jerseyville, while Strobel beat third-seeded Jacob Stewart of Troy 9-7.

In the Boys 14 Singles consolation bracket final, Marc Froidcoeur of Troy defeated fourth-seeded Wyatt Jurgensmeyer of Mascoutah 8-2. Froidcoeur downed Jerry Aplin of Millstadt 8-4 and Jurgensmeyer beat Evan Bosoluke of Alton 8-0 in the consolation semifinals.

Froidcoeur and Stewart teamed up top go 3-0 and win the Boys 14 Doubles crown in round-robin action. They had wins over Bosoluke and Jack Evans (8-0), Xavier Carter of Alton and Stetson Isringhausen (8-3), as well as top-seeded Jurgensmeyer and Strobel (8-1).

In Boys 12 Singles, Ethan Stewart went 3-0 in round-robin action to claim the champion-ship. He defeated top-seeded Brad Bower 8-3, Winston Gao 8-6 and Leyton Keys 8-3. Gao was also 2-1, with wins over Keyes (8-2) and Bower (8-3).
