More than 170 workers who stock parts at the Toyota distribution plant in Torrance are facing a battle after

they rejected a proposed contract that would offer them minimal raises of 1 one percent after Toyota ac-cepted a $2.7 billion tax break. The tax break was a result of tax cuts re-cently enacted by President Trump and Congress.

In their previous contract, workers re-ceived a 12 percent pay increase — 4 percent annually —which expired Feb. 28, said Eric Tate, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 848. “They said our wages may become a problem in the future, so they want to slow it down now,” Tate said.

Negotiations resumed on Saturday, where Toyota brass offered the workers a 35 cent increase each year over the span of three years. Workers overwhelmingly rejected Toyota’s offer.

Workers are upset that even though

Toyota has been experiencing a boom economy and its profits con-tinue to rise, the company’s offer will fail to meet the annual rise in the cost of living and would expose their families to uncapped healthcare costs they just cannot afford.

Toyota employees added that they are struggling to make ends meet

in the Los Angeles region that is 43 percent more expensive than the na-tional average due to the high cost of housing.‘’I’ve been working for the Toyota Parts Distribution Center for the past 12 years,’’ said shop steward Mike Taylor. ‘’I feel the contract they of-fered us is unfair--less than one per-cent for three years.’’

Pausing, Taylor added, ‘’I’m very up-set. Even after the tax break, they said they appreciated our work, but they decided not to share in the tax break. They told us that we are very well compensated for the work that we do in the business that we’re in.’’The Japanese auto worker recently

There wasn’t much dif-ference between the Gahr and South Tor-rance softball teams in Tuesday’s nonleague game, except for the

ability to get the timely hit.

The Gladiators, who are ranked fourth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, scratched out a run in the first, had a lead-off home run in the third from Madison Huskey and added another run on a wild pitch.

It was just enough to defeat the Spartans, 3-0.

“When you’re playing a team of that caliber … Gahr is one of the best teams around,” South coach Scott Hayward said. “In a game like that, against a team like that, when you’re given the opportunities that we had, you have to score and you have to make something happen. If you don’t, then you’re going to lose.

“We just couldn’t come up with that one big hit to break it open despite the fact that we had multiple oppor-

tunities to do so.”

The Spartans, the top-ranked team in the Daily Breeze poll, had bases loaded with two outs in the second inning and failed to score.

In the fifth, South (14-4) had per-haps its best chance with the bases loaded with no outs against Danielle Martinez. Martinez struck out Alyssa Podhurcak and Sophia Fernandez and got Taylor Kuglin to ground out to shortstop.

The Spartans brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Mar-tinez got the final two outs to pre-serve the win.Vanessa Foreman started for Gahr (9-3) and went 3 2/3 and Martinez followed to close out the game, giv-ing Gahr coach Shawn Quarles the perfect tandem as the Gladiators gear up the Carew Classic.

“In the perfect situation, I would like to tandem them,” Quarles said. “I would like to give one three innings and let the other come in and shut down for four innings, just a matter of keeping them fresh for college next

year and keeping their arms strong so we can finish it out. They’ve both been very effective for us.”Fernandez went the distance for the Spartans and battled her way through some tight spots.“I thought she was terrific,” Hayward

said. “She threw one bad pitch, the home run, that was it. To come out and hold a team of that caliber to three runs is a terrific job. I thought she pitched very well.”Dejaene Davis had a pair of hits and two stolen bases for Gahr.

Toyota workers at the Toyota Distribution plant in Torrance have rejected a contract that offers them only a 1% raise. Negotiations with Toyota are continuing.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LOVE NEV-ER DIES, the spellbinding sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, will make its L.A. Premiere beginning next week at Hollywood Pantages Theatre, playing three weeks only; April 4 – 22, 2018. Tickets for LOVE NEVER DIES are now on sale, and available at www.HollywoodPantages.com/LoveNev-erDies and www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 982-2787 or in person at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre Box Office (Opens Daily at 10am PT). Direct from the highly successful production of LOVE NEVER DIES in Hamburg, Germany, Gardar Thor Cortes will portray the man be-hind the mask, ‘The Phantom,’ with Meghan Picerno as ‘Christine Daaé,’ Karen Mason as ‘Madame Giry,’ Sean Thompson as ‘Raoul,’ Mary Michael Patterson as ‘Meg Giry,’ and Casey Lyons and Jake Heston Miller sharing the role of ‘Gustave.’ The trio of Phantom’s henchmen include Katrina Kemp as ‘Fleck,’ Richard Koons as ‘Squelch,’ Stephen Petro-vich as ‘Gangle,’ Gardar Thor Cortes is appearing with the permission of Actors’ Equity Association. The Producers gratefully acknowledge Actors’ Equity Association for its as-sistance of this production. The ensemble includes Chelsey Arce, Erin Chupinsky, Diana DiMar-zio, Tyler Donahue, Yesy Garcia, Alyssa Giannetti, Michael Gillis, Tam-ar Greene, Natalia Lepore Hagan, Lauren Lukacek, Alyssa McAnany, Rachel Anne Moore, Bronson Nor-ris Murphy, Dave Schoonover, Adam Soniak, John Swapshire IV, Kelly Swint, Lucas John Thompson, Cor-rey West and Arthur Wise. LOVE NEVER DIES is a dazzling new production, which takes audi-ences on a thrilling rollercoaster ride of intrigue, obsession and romance. Audiences will seduced by the beau-tiful; sometimes magical and poetic; sometimes joyful; and occasionally

melancholic score. Don’t miss this magnificent continuation of one of the world’s greatest love stories. The new touring production reflects an extensive re-working of the ma-terial by an Australian creative team for the original Australian premiere in 2011. Described by Chris Boyd in The Australian as “The best thing Lloyd Webber has written in the quarter century since The Phantom of the Opera”. Directed by Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical) with new set and costume designs by Gabriela Tylesova, choreogra-phy by 2011 Astaire Awards winner Graeme Murphy, lighting design by Nick Schlieper and sound design by Mick Potter, the show is one of the few instances of a major West End musical being given a complete makeover for subsequent produc-tions. Lloyd Webber said he knew about five minutes into seeing its first run-through that he and the new produc-tion team had achieved something special. “I have the great joy of being able to say that I think this produc-tion is probably the finest one I could ever, ever hope for.” The year is 1907. It is 10 years af-ter his disappearance from the Paris Opera House and The Phantom has escaped to a new life in New York where he lives amongst the scream-ing joy rides and freak shows of Co-ney Island. In this new, electrically charged world, he has finally found a place for his music to soar, but he has never stopped yearning for his one true love and musical protégée, Christine Daaé. Now one of the world’s finest sopranos, Christine accepts an invitation to travel from Paris to New York to perform at a renowned opera house. Christine’s marriage to Raoul is suffering at the hands of his drinking and gambling and they desperately need the finan-cial rewards that America can give them. In a final bid to win back Chris-tine’s love, The Phantom lures her, Raoul, and their young son Gustave, from Manhattan to the glittering and glorious world of Coney Island - not knowing what is in store for them. Since its premiere in 2010, LOVE NEVER DIES has enjoyed produc-

How difficult it is to do nothing. We are so used to going from task to errand, from work to home chores, from `must do things’ to `chosen activities’, but all is about doing, achieving, accom-plishing. Have you ever made an ap-pointment with your-self to do nothing? Do you know how to just be? Maybe you consider life too pre-cious to waste it doing nothing, but let me remind you that doing is not living. Being allows you to connect with the world. To re-connect with yourself, to feel alive, to charge batteries, to pause and rethink, to reconsider, or to observe with perspective. Nothing has to be done to achieve all these things. You only need to allow them to happen. By taking a pause from your daily activities, you will send a note to your higher self, saying that you are available, and it will start talking to you. You will only be able to listen to the wisdom of your heart doing nothing, in silence, still, in meditation or a meditative state… when you pause. This voice whispers, and it talks in so many different ways to you. For a lot of people, being in silence seems to be as difficult as doing nothing. We feel uncomfortable in the presence of silence. We feel an immediate need to fill it with any word, even if it is not important. The problem we have is that in silence and doing nothing, we have to listen to our inner voice. Unless you have cultivated a good

relationship with yourself, this voice is usually very critical, judgmental, and not compassionate. It does not forget any of your mistakes or faults, and does not hesitate to remind you of all that is not working in your life. The real reason we don’t spend more time in silence, relaxing, being present in our lives is that we want to distract ourselves. We multitask, we live in several places at the same time. We spend more time looking at what others do or say in the me-dia, or social media, than looking at ourselves and our lives. To do inner work is not really an option if you want to grow in happiness, Love, and abundance. Let me tell you the secret of success in life: Love your-self and others passionately, uncon-ditionally, without limits. Love is the key to your happiness and success and will allow you to enjoy the most wonderful life you can ever imagine, and the way to self-Love begins in si-lently and gently listening to yourself, doing nothing. I Love You!

Sometimes, life leads wander-ing souls to curious places. In J. L. Campbell’s debut novel, “Dog Wash. Can I Help You?” (published by iUni-verse), a homeless veteran looking for employment has his prayers an-swered when he enters a pet store with a grooming salon. The narrative centers on themes surrounding the intercession of the saints and faith in God. The novel follows Denise Jameson, a master groomer who has been plying her trade for over 35 years. She is the manager of Dog Wash, a grooming salon. There is never a dull moment for Denise, her fellow employees, and a resident trouble-making mynah bird, Diego, who talks the day away. Their lives intersect with Tony Lovic, a homeless U.S. Army veteran, who has been praying to St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, to find him a job. One day, Tony enters Denise’s grooming salon, and Diego

greets him by saying, “Dog Wash. Can I help you?” It’s an action that will change more than one life for the better. Campbell, a veteran herself, draws from her own experiences working part-time in a grooming salon. The novel pairs a love for animals with a strong message about God, fate and building toward a life filled with

purpose. “Dog Wash. Can I Help You?”By J. L. CampbellSoftcover | 6 x 9 in | 492 pages | ISBN 9781532037948E-Book | 492 pages | ISBN 9781532037931Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble

Comedian Byron Allen Buys the Weather Channel for $300 Million

The Scientology Network went live this month, making it instantly ac-cessible to tens of millions of house-holds across the United States and hundreds of millions more worldwide over the internet. Describing the pur-pose of the new network, Mr. David Miscavige, ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, welcomed the world to the network. “You’ve probably heard of Scientolo-gy,” Mr. Miscavige stated. “In fact, ev-ery six seconds someone searches the question, ‘What is Scientology?’ There’s a lot of talk about us and we get it. People are curious. Well, we want to answer your questions, be-cause, frankly, whatever you have heard, if you haven’t heard it from us, I can assure you, we are not what you expect.” Scientology is an all-denominational religion whereby a Christian, Mor-mon, Buddhist or any faith does not give up their beliefs and their own church to attend Scientology classes or counselling. The Scientology Net-work is immediately available any-where, anytime. It’s on television

in the United States, as well as live streaming everywhere at Scientol-ogy.tv. The network represents a new genre of religious broadcasting that includes original programs that take viewers into the everyday lives of Sci-entologists, the Church as an institu-tion and its humanitarian and social betterment organizations. These programs show Scientology in action, providing not just insights into the only major religion to emerge in the last century, but also offering a fresh take on compelling television entertainment demanded by today’s digital world. It’s also available on such streaming services as Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku and mobile apps that can be downloaded for smartphones and tablets. And it will continue to ex-pand through additional platforms in the future. The programming is available on many providers and www.scientology.tv or via mobile apps, iTunes: www.bit.ly/ScientologyNetworkiTunes and Google Play: bit.ly/ScientologyNet-workGooglePlay.

Comedian and producer Byron Allen acquired the Weather Channel TV network as he looks to expand his film and TV production company into a major media business.

Allen’s Entertainment Studios Inc. bought the network from Blackstone Group, Bain Capital and Comcast Corp., according to a statement Thursday. The price was approxi-mately $300 million, according to a person familiar with the terms who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be identified. That’s a fraction of what the larger company sold for a decade ago.

The deal includes the famous cable TV network, but not online assets such as the website Weather.com and related mobile apps, which were acquired by International Business Machines Corp. in January 2016. In an interview on a day in which rain and snow blanketed much of the U.S., Allen said he was attracted to the reach and familiarity of the brand.

“Snowstorms, rain, mudslides, our lives and our families’ safety depend on this info,” Allen said. “When a big storm happens, it’s the Super Bowl of weather. As many as 30 million people watch.”

Allen’s company produces and syn-dicates TV shows and has released films, such as last year’s thriller “47 Meters Down.” It also owns Comedy.tv and Cars.tv, which are distributed

online and through pay-TV providers.

Allen said he want to invest more in the Weather Channel, expanding both its international and local distri-bution. It’s part of a broader strategy to invest what he said would be bil-lions of dollars in the media and en-

tertainment industry.

The Comcast-Blackstone-Bain-led group had purchased the Weather Channel in 2008 for about $3.5 bil-lion. A spokesman for Blackstone de-clined to comment.

King Tut is Black! Say Activists Protesting Exhibit at the California Science Center

By Shirley HawkinsContributing Writer

A number of activists recently gath-ered outside of the California Sci-ence Center in Exposition Park to hold a demonstration during the opening of “King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh,” which is cel-ebrating the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb until January 6, 2019.Activists near the site passed out gold flyers to visitors that depicted pictures of dark-skinned African kings and queens. The group is pro-testing participating sponsors who fail to acknowledge that King Tut-ankhamen and Queen Nefertiti were black Africans.

‘’I have seen various advertisements relating to the opening of this exhibit and none of them reveal the fact that the acclaimed Pharaoh was a black African,’’ said Clegg. The King Tut exhibit features over 150 artifacts and objects, many leav-ing Egypt for the first time.

The exhibition will be on display in 10 cities internationally over the course of seven years, and then the artifacts will go to the still-under-construction Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, where they will remain permanently.‘’Since 1976, the artifacts of King Tu-tankhamen have toured the United States twice,’’ he declared. ‘’Each time the sponsors have been care-ful to directly or indirectly deny the fact that the Pharaoh was a black Af-rican,’’ he pointed out. ‘’In 1976, the exhibit’s catalog cautioned its read-ers that any dark depiction of the king had ‘’no ethnic significance.’’’Clegg said the ‘whitewashing’ of the Pharaoh extends back decades but said that there is irrefutable scientific proof that King Tut was black.

‘’In January of 2012, DNA Tribes Digest published the results of their examination of the mummies of King Tut, his mother, father, pater-nal grandparents and paternal great grandparents,’’ said Clegg. ‘’The findings indicated that, when com-pared to various populations around the world today, these mummies have an overwhelming genetic re-

lationship to the people of Southern Africa, the African Great Lakes and Tropical West Africa.

‘’In the case of King Tut, 96% of his genetic markers match current populations of Sub-Saharan Africa; while 82% of the genetic markers of his mother, Queen Nefertiti, and 92% of his father, Akhenaten, match the same populations.’’

Dr. David Horne, professor of Pan African Studies at California State University Northridge who also par-ticipated in the demonstration, point-ed out that, ‘’They have renditions of Queen Nefertiti and King Tut in the exhibit that depict them as Cauca-soid or white-looking.’’

Dr. Horne said that he was particu-larly disturbed that the true African origins of Queen Nefertiti and King Tutankhamen are not part of the public school curriculum.

‘’You don’t want to steal people’s history because the young people need to have role models of great contributions made by people who look like them,” Horne pointed out. ‘’When you take that away, you tell them that people who look like them have been nothing but participants in history.’’

Pausing, he added; ‘’We have to make sure that the academic world cannot put out inaccurate informa-tion without being criticized for it.’’Patrice Simmons, owner of the Sun Goddess Beauty Center who ar-rived at the demonstration dressed as Queen Nefertiti, said she began dressing up as the African Queen af-ter she saw a segment on NBC news that depicted a bust of Nefertiti as a white woman.

‘’I said, nooo—I have visited the Cai-ro museum twice and you can clearly see that the people of that time were Nubian black Africans. They all had broad noses,’’ she recalled.

Demonstrator David Turner, who waved a sign that read “King Tut was a Black African,’’ said that the demonstrations will be ongoing. “We plan to boycott the exhibit’s spon-

sors—including American Express, Toyota, Princess Cruises and Fed-eral Express. ‘’We are also planning to bring busloads of school children to the Science Center to join in the demonstration because this is part of their history. We are fed up,’’ said Turner. ‘’This demonstration will be long and protracted.’’

Shell Omega, senior vice president of communications at the California Science Center, said of the demon-strators, ‘’This is not the same King Tut exhibit that sparked protests years ago. We welcome the dem-onstrator’s presence as well as the information they are providing.’’Clegg said that local historians and activists will be holding ongoing demonstrations in front of the Sci-ence Center several times during the week and on Saturdays.

‘’The Western academic, scien-tific and media establishments have suppressed, distorted and ignored the glorious history of black people,’’ Clegg declared. ‘’White scholars and academics won’t come out and say that King Tut or the ancient Egyp-tians were black Africans--but if you do any studies on King Tut and Queen Nefertiti, you know that they were black people.’’

Arnold Schwarzenegger made his first public statement after undergoing heart surgery on Thursday. The star took to Twit-ter on Monday to tell his fans that he’s OK and to thank the medical professionals that took care of him.As previously reported, the 70-year-old actor went in for an expected surgery to replace an artificial pulmonary valve in his heart that had been installed in 1997 after he was diag-nosed with a congenital heart defect. The procedure was expected to be routine, but an open-heart surgery team was on standby in case there were any complications. There was some confusion as to whether or not the surgery team was needed, but the star seems to have confirmed that they were needed and he underwent an unexpected open-heart sur-gery.

“It’s true: I’m back! I went to sleep expecting to wake up with a small incision and woke up with a big one - but guess what? I woke up, and that’s

something to be thankful for,” he wrote. “Thank you to the doctors & nurses. And I’m truly filled with gratitude for all of the kind messages.”

A rep for the star released a statement on Twitter Thursday explaining that Schwarzeneg-ger was in stable condition and doing fine after the surgery. As proof of this claim, the rep shared the star’s first words af-ter waking up.

“I’m back,” Schwarzenegger reportedly said, winking at his now-famous catchphrase from the iconic “Terminator” mov-ies. According to The Wrap, the star is slated to appear in the upcoming reboot of the “Terminator” franchise, which is currently scheduled to debut in 2019. Previously, he’s been engaged in political activism, making comments about the current Republican party as well as gerrymandering and oil companies.

El Camino College student publications and individual journalism students won a variety of awards in two competitions ear-lier this month. The Union newspaper and Warrior Life magazine were honored for placing in the top 10 in “Best of Show” contest at the As-sociated Collegiate Press national confer-ence, March 1-3 in Long Beach. The Union took sixth-place honors while Warrior Life was ranked eighth in on-site competition against publications from across the coun-try. “Congratulations to our students for con-tinuing the El Camino College journalism program’s tradition of excellence with these recent awards,” said ECC President Dena P. Maloney. “Through the college’s journal-ism program, our students have access valuable learning experiences at confer-ences such as these, which will prepare them for a successful future.” Meanwhile, ECC journalists and publica-tions won 10 awards from the California College Media Association, which an-nounced its winners at a separate event held in conjunction with the three-day ACP conference. Karla Henry took first place in the commu-nity college division for best news video with her “Girls in the Garage” presentation while Don Perez was awarded a second in the non-news video category for “Librarian of Horror.” He also received a third-place award for his feature story on the same subject for The Union. Jorge Villa was hon-ored with a second-place award for best magazine photo for his centerpiece photo accompanying the story “Amor y Tragedia.” Villa also received an honorable mention for a photo illustration in The Union for a collage of food.

The Union picked up third-place awards in its class for best overall newspaper design and best newspaper front page while taking the honorable mention slot for overall news-paper excellence. Zach Hatakeyama won third-place awards for best infographic for his chart comparing bookstore and Amazon prices. He also received third-place honors for best inside page spread with his “Lord Roka” page design. Emma DiMaggio’s im-age of kneeling football players took a third place for best news photo. Key publication staff members also recently attended the College Media Association conference in New York. The Union and Warrior Life are produced entirely by students enrolled in journalism classes. The newspaper and the annual magazine are available on racks and at other distribution points throughout the El Camino College campus. The newspaper can be viewed online at www.eccunion.com; the magazine is available at http://ec-cunion.com/warrior-life/. Toyota then issued a statement that has baffled its employees: “Despite increased competition and other economic concerns, we still offered an extremely generous wage and benefits package that greatly exceeds comparable local wages and benefits,” the statement read in part. “This followed our de-cision last year to keep the LAPDC where it is, instead of moving it after Toyota sold its Torrance campus, to minimize disruption to our team mem-bers.”Workers are not backing down. ‘’We have a letter going out to all the Toyota dealerships let-ting them know that the Toyota Parts Distribution employees will be coming to their dealer-ships in the near future to pass out bills to their customers about the lack of a wage in-crease their company is offer-ing,” said Tate.‘’We need a fair contract,’’ continued Tate. ‘’We live in Southern California which has the highest cost of living in the country and we need a fair raise.’’Tate added that the next move on negotiations is squarely in the company’s court. ‘’They said that they would get back to us this week.’’Teamsters Local 848 is con-sidering filing charges with

The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Elec-tion to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located and more than three months have elapsed since such recordation. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are con-sidering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site, Stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 1635. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement infor-mation is to attend the scheduled sale. DATE: 3/29/2018 Parker Foreclosure Services, LLC PO Box 2940 Ventura, CA 93002-2940 844-447-7869 Donald D.
