For one night dur-ing the year, friends and family of Ja-mie Mosley and her moth-er, Kay Mos-ley, can forget their troubles and cut loose. To accomplish this, the moth-e r - d a u g h t e r team enter-tained with their fifth annual luau poolside at their home in Dobson.

This celebration of way too much food and

never enough fun and fel-lowship was shared by ladies from C l e m m o n s , Sparta and as far away as Maryland.

With an island back-ground, the ladies partici-pated in kara-oke, dancing, s w i m m i n g and enjoying refreshments.

And the evening con-tinued with an old-fash-ioned pajama party with the gals acting as if they

were in grammar school. They brought out their hula-hoops, grass skirts and even braided their hair.

The morning found the party-goers with very little sleep; however, they were rejuvenated with a tasty breakfast.

Those having a fun-filled time, in addition to hostesses Jamie and Kay, were Lawana Murphy, Christy and Lauren Dow-ell, Tracey Woodruff, Tyra Badgett, Phyllis Mc-Millian, Patty, Anna and Melinda Hull, Greta and Maddie Wylam, Robin Hardin, Brooke Hemp and Shannon, Annette and Samantha Mosley.

Abigale Morgan Harold and Katie Knight received their Girl Scout Silver Awards at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Both of these girls have been Girl Scouts for nine years, since Troop 41310 began. Each of them completed a Journey and Girl Scout Silver Award Project with at least 50 hours of community service.

Abby’s parents are Gary and Vickie Harold. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Harold and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Smith. She is a rising ninth grader at Mount Airy High School. Her project was on the Mount Airy Middle School Hungry Bears Backpack Food Program. Mrs. Gloria Best was her adviser.

Katie attended Millennium Charter Academy and will at-tend The Early School in Dob-son this fall. Her parents are Lance and Jane Knight.

Delegates of Wahissa Lodge 118 of the Old Hickory Council, Boy Scouts of America won the national southern drum and singing competition at the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) at Michigan State University on Aug. 2. Southern-style singing is a low-key, con-stant drumbeat which provides music for dancers to move in cultural celebration of Native American heritage. Will Garwood was crowned national champion of the Old-Time Sioux dance style.

“Through all the time and effort put in through the years, this win is the crowning achievement to all of the hard work that has been put in,” said Garwood.

Many of the drummers and singers are members of the Raven Knob staff and par-ticipate in local Pow-wows and Wednesday night campires during the summer.

Members from the local drum team in-clude Hunter Day of Wilkesboro, Jeffery Swart, Kevin Argabright, Andrew Tucker and DJ Riggs, all of Winston-Salem, Dalton Lankford of King, and Harry Dearmin of Walnut Cove.

“Although the brothers of Wahissa are very proud of their victory, they are staying

modest,” said Hunter Day. “Everybody is a winner.”

Every three years, youth and adult mem-

bers of the Order of the Arrow gather on the campus of a major university for NOAC. This conference is scouting’s second-largest national program event. NOAC draws near-ly 7,000 youths and adults from all across the United States and as far away as Europe and Asia.

Wahissa Lodge brought 38 delegates to NOAC for a week-long of activities, includ-ing training, ceremonies performance and evaluation, Native American events, shows and Founders’ Day. The delegation also as-sembled for four major shows in the Michi-gan State Breslin Student Events Center: an opening show; a history/recognition show; a theme show; and a 100-hundredth celebra-tion of the Eagle Scout Award show.

The Order of the Arrow is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of Ameri-ca. The Order was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadel-phia Council, Boy Scouts of America. Wa-hissa is the OA lodge for the Old Hickory Council which represents seven counties. The Order of the Arrow has more than 170,000 active members located in lodges afiliated with over 295 Boy Scout councils.

A group of family members re-cently gathered to celebrate the 90th birthday of Alvis (Mac) McAl-exander. The surprise party was held at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Wanda McAlexander. Mr. McAlexander’s wife, Shelva, was a special guest.

His son, John, and wife Cyn-di came in from Montclair, Va. Daughter-in-law Nancy McAlexan-der came from Richmond with her daughter Heather Williams, son-in-law Patrick, and grandson Hen-ry. Dwight and Wanda’s son, Allen McAlexander and wife Roxane and daughters Madelyn and Grace, came from Pennsylvania. Roxane and Grace and Madelyn prepared a 90’s timeline of photos that had pictures of Mr. McAlexander and world events from his birth to pres-ent time.

After a tasty meal guests enjoyed a special birthday cake. The top was made up of pictures of Mr. McAlexander as a boy and as a young WWII soldier.
