STOP PRESS 1111 filii_%' BTR buys into Saiag1s sealing business The UK-based manufacturing and engineering conglomerate, BTR, has signed an agreement to acquire a 70% interest in Saiag's automotive sealing systems business for £41 million. The agreement is condirional on normal regulatory approvals and allows BTR to increase its shareholding, commencing in November 2000. Saiag's automotive sealing systems business is the market leader in Italy for extruded and moulded vehicle seals. The transaction also includes Saiag's sealing systems activities in Poland and Belgium, and its related interests in France and China. Across its five principal sites, Saiag's sealing systems activities have approximately 1400 employees, and in 1997, the business generated total sales of £95 million. Total net assets, which are the subject of the transaction, are £49 million. BTR will integrate Saiag's automotive sealing systems business into its own global sealing systems group, generating significant operational and technology benefits, and improving the scope for world- wide supply to more automotive platforms. Saiag's established ventures in Poland and China offer attractive growth potential in emerging markets, and also the opportunity to provide the benefits of global sourcing of components to automotive manufacturers. Commenting on the acquisition, John Thompson, executive director responsible for BTR Automotive, said that the acquISItion demonstrates BTR's commitment to a global scale sealing group, capable of supplying products to automotive OEMs in all markets. BTR anticipates significantly improved service to existing customers of both Saiag and the current BTR Sealing Systems Group, as well as product development and technology synergies. @ Toyota awards automotive manufacturing plants "Manufacturing plants owned by Federal-Mogul and Standard Products have been given performance awards by Toyota Motor Manufacturing. Standard Products' Rocky Mount and Goldsboro. North Carolina, plants earned both qualiry and delivery awards, given to suppliers who provide the highest standards in quali ty. delivery, value improvement, and cost reduction for parts, materials, transportation and export. The two plants earned the quality performance achievement award for achieving superior parts per million quality levels, and the delivery performance achievement award for 100% on-time delivery performance. Federal-Mogul's Greenville, Michigan, manufacturing location earned an excellent delivery performance award. The company was also awarded six certificates of achievement. three of which went to the Skokie, Illinois, location, which manufactures a broad line of gaskets for the automotive and heavy-duty vehicle markets. The certificates were for value improvement. quality and delivery. Electronic commerce award for Federal Mogul Federal Mogul has received a certificate of EDI and bar code enablement from Honda of America. The certificate signifies that the company's gasket and oil seal manufacturing facility in Summerton, South Carolina. has successful completed all tests of ED! and Bar Code capability, as required by Honda of America Manufacturing and the DELTA project. The project involves electronically transmitting all required information, which has resulted in the elimination of physical invoices, and allows payments to be made electronically. Development agreement to yield new fluoropolymers Ausimont USA, the global fluoropolymer producer, has entered into a joint development and marketing agreement with Integument Technologies, a company offering fluoropolymer modification processes. The resultant combination of technologies is expected to produce high perrormance fluoropolymers, which will find uses in aerospace, automotive, chemical, defence and semiconductor applications. Integument Technologies holds the patents to many unique fluoropolymer modification processes. One such technology, based on high energy plasma. provides surface treatments that enhance reactiviry at the polymer's surface, while its bulk properties remain unaffected. These treatments can be used to change the wettability of fluoropolymer surfaces, as well as pn;lVide the abiliry to perform novel chemistry with an, otherwise inert, matenal. A second process infuses materials into the bulk space of fluoropolymer resins. This infusion technique affects the bulk properties, leading to higher performance composite materials. The two processes can be used independently, or in combination, to realise a wide range of final properties. producing novel, high performance materials.
