Towson High School Alumni Association Fall 2016 I am the new Treasurer of the Alumni Association and a 1975 Towson High graduate. I have to admit that over the years, while I supported Towson High athletics and was active during the years my children attended Towson, I was not active with the Alumni Association. I’m not even sure I knew all that the associa- tion was doing. That has all changed this year with the election of new officers and the addition of new board members. I’m getting to know Towson High School all over again and helping to find ways to support the school and the students. Through the dedication of the previ- ous board who worked long and hard to keep our association viable, money has been raised and that money has been used for scholarships for gradu- ating seniors and for classroom sup- plies, equipment and materials to en- hance the educational experience for current students. The association also made contributions for the new turf field and scoreboard. With new people come new ideas about ways to support Towson High School’s students and teachers. We hope to share all of the generous dona- tions we receive equitably and with ev- ery part of the student body, across all disciplines. Through the school’s ad- ministration, we reach out to depart- ment chairpersons and teachers asking them what their needs are, those not covered in the BCPS budget. There is so much negative news about public education in the me- dia but at Towson High School, chil- dren are learning, being challenged to stretch their minds and dream their dreams. Towson’s graduation rate continues to be exceptional. There is much to be proud of in these old hall- ways. The goal of the Alumni Asso- ciation is to continue to support our students as they strive for excellence and the achieving of their goals. Towson High School Alumni Association

Fall 2016

I am the new Treasurer of the Alumni Association and a 1975 Towson High graduate. I have to admit that over

the years, while I supported Towson High athletics and was active during the years my children attended Towson, I was not active with the Alumni Association. I’m not even sure I knew all that the associa-tion was doing.

That has all changed this year with the election of new officers and the addition of new board members. I’m getting to know Towson High School all over again and helping to find ways to support the school and the students. Through the dedication of the previ-ous board who worked long and hard to keep our association viable, money has been raised and that money has been used for scholarships for gradu-ating seniors and for classroom sup-plies, equipment and materials to en-hance the educational experience for current students. The association also made contributions for the new turf field and scoreboard.

With new people come new ideas about ways to support Towson High School’s students and teachers. We hope to share all of the generous dona-tions we receive equitably and with ev-ery part of the student body, across all disciplines. Through the school’s ad-ministration, we reach out to depart-ment chairpersons and teachers asking them what their needs are, those not covered in the BCPS budget.

There is so much negative news about public education in the me-dia but at Towson High School, chil-

dren are learning, being challenged to stretch their minds and dream their dreams. Towson’s graduation rate continues to be exceptional. There is much to be proud of in these old hall-ways. The goal of the Alumni Asso-ciation is to continue to support our students as they strive for excellence and the achieving of their goals. We welcome all of you and encourage you to get involved, either by making a contribution to the annual fund or by joining us in person, working with fac-ulty, staff and students.

Congratulations to Towson High Alumni Association Hall of Fame inductee Nicholas K.

Venetoulis and the Class of 1956!Nick began his music career

at 19 and became known profes-sionally as ‘Nick Venet’. By 21 he was a producer and head of A&R at Capitol records, where he signed the Beach Boys, producing some of their early material. Over the years at Capitol he signed and produced The Letterman, Bobby Darin, Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, The Kings-ton Trio, Ricky Nelson and many others. Years later, at United Art-ists, the long list of artists included Don McLean, Sam Cooke, Wayne Newton and Frank Zappa.

Nick was one of the founders of the National Academy of Record-ing Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the organization that awards the

G r a m m y s . He remained a trustee of NARAS un-til he died in 1998, at the age of 61, from lym-phoma.

Nick was heavily involved in community service, including long-time in-volvement in the American Indi-an Movement. He received the George Washington Carver Me-morial Institute’s Award of Merit and Honorary Fellowship for his volunteer work promoting mu-sic in troubled areas of L.A. This work was later adopted by NARAS and became their ‘Grammys in the Schools’ program, which is still active today.

Colophon is Towson High School’s nationally recognized, award-winning, student run

Literary and Arts Magazine. This past year the students worked incredibly hard to select the best stories, poems and artwork from the 1966 through 2015 annually published editions. The result was an unbelievably profession-al, yearbook sized, 50th anniversary issue. To celebrate the issue, the Col-ophon staff invited the selected writers and artists to attend a reading of their works. The reading was held May 20th in the library and was a huge success. Congratulations to the entire Colo-phon staff for a job exceedingly well done. (For more information about Colophon, visit their website at http://thscolophon.weebly.com/.)

Frances Shores Meginnis, a memora-ble Towson High School English teach-er, who taught from 1953 to 1967, and whose lessons were lessons in life, as well as in literature and writing, died July 7th, 2016 at the age of 95.

“Her class was pretty rigorous and demanding. She had a sense of humor that was dry and sarcastic and not all students liked her at first,” said Mr. Hal Piper, who studied with Mrs. Meginnis from 1955 to 1956. “You quickly realized she was asking you to be better than you were, and there were lots of challenges,” he said.

F. Carvel Payne ’60 recalls, “You quaked in your seat when you were in her class, as she did not suffer fools si-lently.” And with a laugh “She wanted you to know that your latest epistle was not a gift to God’s literary world. But I loved her, and most people did well later in their college English classes be-cause of her.”
