Very warm welcome to Townsville and Sawubona ! Sawubona is an African Zulu greeting that means “I see you.” It may seem similar to our usual greeting of “hello” but its meaning to the Zulu people has a deeper significance. It means, “I see your personality. I see your humanity. I see your dignity and respect.” For our P1 students who have just joined us, we see them, in all their individuality, humanity and potential. As a school, we believe that the student’s journey begins with the inculcation of good habits. Our efforts to build their social emotional competencies, their academic areas, their interests and talents will develop our students holistically, to become the young citizens that we can be proud of. To do this well, we will need to work closely as a community. Children need role models to demonstrate to them grace and dignity. The way we carry ourselves is part of that education. We want to encourage our stu-dents to practice these values for themselves through their years in Townsville Primary School. Our mission as a school and a community “To nurture our pupils to become people of character, healthy patriotic citizens and creative independent thinkers, equipped with 21st century skills” means that we are all to models at the behaviours that would explicitly demonstrate to the children the discipline that will stand them in good stead for their fu-ture. I look forward to the good work that we can do and the fruitful partnership ahead. Sawubona. Mr Victor Tan Principal

Townsville Primary School started functioning at its former premises at

Ang Mo Kio St 32 in 1983. The school was officially declared open on 25

July 1985 by BG Lee Hsien Loong, then Minister of State for Defence,

Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for Teck Ghee Constituen-

cy. The school moved to its current premises at 3 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10

in December 2000 and merged with Chong Shan Primary School in 2001.

Over the years, the school has been visited by dignitaries and educators

from all over the world, the most eminent being Her Majesty Queen Eliza-

beth II of Great Britain in 1989. The school has also hosted school leaders,

teachers and students from other countries such as China, India and Indo-

nesia.

In 2016, the Ministry of Education designated the school’s Visual Arts Pro-gramme as a Learning for Life Programme. This is a strong affirmation of our Visual Arts Programme, which not only enables our students to ac-quire art-making knowledge and skills, but also aims to develop 21

GUIDELINES ON SCHOOL BAGS

Let’s help our students manage their bag loads.

Opt for bags of lightweight material with fewer compartments and

adjustable straps with cushions.

Guide our students to pack according to the timetable, bringing

only the relevant and the handy, e.g., pack only workbooks

needed for the semester and smaller 12-pack coloured pencil

sets instead of larger ones.

Guide our students on having good posture, e.g., carrying bags

with both straps instead of one and adjusting their straps for bal-

ance and fit.

Utilise locker facilities that are provided for our students and plan

to use our water coolers to re-fill water bottles instead of getting

larger ones.

Avoid unnecessary and large items such as cards, heavy toys,

metal rulers and big umbrellas.

Page 16: Townsville Primary One Handbook

16

Townsvillites will be wearing single set multi-purpose uniforms. The uniform is designed for the student’s comfort and is suitable for both classroom and PE lessons. The uniform should be neatly worn and untucked, with black shoes and white socks. Uniforms will have a school logo with a name tag underneath, symbolising the students support for the school’s motto, “Do Our Best”. The student’s name tag is a specific colour for each cohort and will follow them throughout their six years in Townsville. The name tags provide a sense of cama-raderie and identity for our students. Students should avoid mixing combinations of previous sets of the uniforms with newer ones. (e.g., avoid wearing the blue coloured PE shirt with new version of pants)

STUDENT SAFETY AND MEASURES FOR COVID-19 The safety of our students is our top most priority. The school seeks your kind co-operation to maintain our national posture and implement measures for the safety of all during the pandemic. Do conduct daily screenings of our students and household members and avoid sending them to school when someone is not well. Do seek medical attention and keep our teachers informed. Do practice safe distancing when picking or sending our students. Visiting the School All visitors should make an appointment prior to coming to school

report at the security counter first to register, complying with

declaration formalities for health, entry and travel

display the Visitor’s Pass when in school premises, returning it

before leaving

During curriculum hours, do sign out your child, either at the Guard

House or the General Office

Driving to School Do drive carefully within the school compound and comply with directions from our school staff and security guards. The speed limit along Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 is 40km/h from 0600-0730hrs and 1200-1430 hrs. There is no right turn when exiting from 6.45-7.45am. When dropping off at the porch, do be safe and brief. As an

alternative, consider dropping your children off at the HDB car

park at our rear gate.

During dismissal, do let our buses exit first before driving in and

while waiting, do turn off your engines to minimise pollution.

When visiting, do park at the visitors’ lots next to the guard post

or at the HDB carpark at our rear gate

GENERAL INFORMATION

Page 19: Townsville Primary One Handbook

19

Walking to school Students should take safety precautions and observe traffic rules while walk-ing, e.g., using the pedestrian crossing and avoiding the use of handphones when crossing the road. Do accompany your children when walking across the HDB carpark at the school’s rear gate. Lost and Found Items Any items found by students in the school premises should be handed over to the General Office. The items will be displayed at the Lost and Found counter located near the Security Counter at the rear gate. EZ Link cards that are found will be kept at the Operation Manager’s Office which is located at the General Office. Students are to collect their cards from him. Moving about the School Our younger students tend to get excited in a larger school setting than they are used to. Do remind them to listen to their teachers to care for themselves and their friends. Help us remind them to be mindful of their surroundings and our safety signs. Reinforce with them to avoid running along stairs and corners, encourage them to line up for food and buses and play safely at areas like the soccer field and basketball court.

Leave of Absence From School

Parents/guardians are strongly discouraged from applying for leave for their

children during curriculum time Our students will not fully benefit from teach-

ing and learning if they miss parts of it. Do plan vacations during the school

holidays instead.

Absence from school should be covered by a Medical Certificate or a formal

letter from parents.

OUR FOCUS FOR OUR PRIMARY ONE

Our Vision

Townsville believes that the first year is an important time to build foun-

dational skills in our students. While learning about class routines, aca-

demic skills and co-curricular activities like PE, Art and Music. They

will acquire thinking skills and be encouraged to build positive dispos-

tions towards learning. These will set a strong basis for their journey to

becoming leaders of character and learners for life, our vision for

them.

Teaching Approach

Townsville believes that every child can and wants to learn. The teach-

ers adopt an interdisciplinary approach, i.e. the teachers integrate the

various subjects through meaningful and exciting activities based on

themes. Students are taught computer skills to enhance their learning,

an important skill for blended learning and home based learning and in

the longer term self-directed learning. To develop social skills of our

students, teachers use co-operative learning strategies to allow them

to work on projects or assignments in teams.

Learning and Assessment

Holistic Assessment (HA) refers to the ongoing gathering of infor-

mation on different facets of a child from various sources, with the aim

of providing quantitative and qualitative feedback to support and guide

the child’s development. There is no mid-year and final year examina-

tion. Instead, bite-sized formative assessments are carried out for our

P1 students throughout the year. Parents/guardians will receive feed-

back on the performance of their children/wards in the form of rubrics.

Students will learn to assess their own learning across all subjects us-

ing a simple rubric, beginning, developing, competent and achieve-

ment, for understanding where they are and what they need to learn.

Page 22: Townsville Primary One Handbook

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Key Focus for P1

The STELLAR approach, which stands for Strategies for English Lan-guage Learning and Reading programme was introduced to all P1 and P2 students since 2009.

Skills & Strategies

STELLAR aims to strengthen both language and reading skills as well

as promote a positive attitude towards reading in the foundational years

through the following three approaches:

Shared Book Approach (SBA)

Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA)

Learning Centre (LC)

Students will learn through shared reading and shared experiences and

are encouraged to think, talk and write about these shared readings and

experiences. Grammar and phonemic awareness will be explicitly

taught from the materials and tasks used in the STELLAR classrooms.

CHARACTER EDUCATION (CCE)

Values in Action Programme Grounded on the universal core value ‘Compassion’, the school’s VIA Programme aims to provide our students with opportunities to contribute back to the community as well as to inculcate active citizenry skills such as being socially responsible citizens who have a role in enhancing the well-being of the community and the country they live in. Delivery of our VIA programme is guided by the dual themes of ‘Growing a Big Heart’ and ‘Caring for the Environment’, with opportunities created for service learning. The school adopts the ‘Service Learning’ methodology which takes into consideration the following 4 areas in designing its VIA programme such as engaging students in service that meets real community needs identifying learning outcomes to link the students’ service experi-

ences to the school curriculum preparing students’ mentally and physically for the service tasks providing a structured process to guide students in carrying out

the VIA outreaches.

Each week, an allocated one period known as Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP), is set aside for form teachers to build positive relation-ships and social and emotional competencies in their students through games and play-based activities as well as to enhance bonding between form teachers and students.

National Education & Social Studies

National Education aims to develop national cohesion, cultivate the instinct for survival as a nation and instil in our students, a sense of confidence in our nation’s future and emotional rootedness to Singapore.

Every year, Townsville commemorates 4 National Education (NE) core events namely Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, Racial Harmony Day and National Day to engender a shared sense of nationhood as well as an understanding of how our past is relevant to our present and future. Through Social Studies lessons, the yearly interactive learning trails and the commemoration of the NE core events, students are able to develop a sense of emotional belonging and commitment to the community and nation.
