Official bulletin of District 201Q2

District Governor Gary Young Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club

Issue 10 : April 2020

We do live in exceptional times with COVID-19 (coronavirus) impacting everything we do. These are indeed trying times and a time when we Lions need to watch out for each other and don't forget to check on those who are isolated or living on their own, a simple call to ask "R U OK", or "is there anything we can do" can brighten up someone’s day during this period of isolation.

I want to personally thank your club for your incredible work in supporting our community and each other during this extraordinary time.

Greeting to all Lions, Leos and Lionesses

While we consider others, we also need to look after ourselves and follow the important steps of hygiene and social distancing as many Lions are at a critical age bracket and cannot afford to contract COVID-19. So please, follow the governments directives and we will all be there to continue this great work we do when this virus has passed.

We do recommend that each of our clubs reduced meetings to no more than one per month, cease all activities that put members at risk — or go into recess until such time as the spread of this virus stops and it is safe to once again continue our community and fundraising activities.

Whatever your club decides, remember to keep your Zone Chair informed who in turn will advise Cabinet.

Lions are all very special people, so please be safe so we can continue doing what we Lions do when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, if you need any assistance during this time, please contact your Zone Chair in the first instance and they will know who to speak with or know what can be done to help each other during these difficult times.

Cabinet Meetings and Training for new club officers will move on-line to assist Lions in isolation and to minimise any travel or exposure in the community, keep an eye out for training times and GoTo meeting requests and please participate in these training activities.

Please also note that, along with the District Cabinet meeting via GoTo, the Council of Governors will also be meeting via GoTo on the 8 April to discuss our future. I will keep everyone informed.

Thank you, and be safe

Report from Cabinet Secretary Norm

McMullen

How quickly life can change, Greetings To All,

The nation and most countries are feeling the impacts of COVID-19 and these ongoing impacts are affecting every person in Australia, either directly through job cuts or indirectly as we move into isolation for protection.

We Lions have gone from preparing for conventions and club elections, to isolating and closing down all activities and meetings in a very short period of time. Lions Youth of the Year, our MD201 and International Conventions have all been cancelled and important meetings and training for newly elected officers are to be conducted on-line.

Reporting remains an issue, we have 61 Lions clubs in the district of which 18 clubs have not reported in MYLCI for over 12 months, and 30 Lions Clubs have not completed their PU101’s and returned them to be included in the next directory. If you are reading this and not sure if your club has filled out your PU101, please follow up urgently and let me know, even if it is “no changes” to last year.

As the MD201 Convention is cancelled, we now require nominations from every club (one delegate for each 10 members, or part thereof, 24 members is 2 delegates, 26 members is 3 delegates) and this includes each delegate’s postal addresses so voting papers can be sent out.

In time, life will return to normal and we Lions can continue to do what we do well. As information becomes available on requirements for Lions, we will ensure this information is passed on to all clubs and members, in the meantime the Townsville Convention Committee is seeking feedback from Lions…new and old…on ways they can improve our own Conventions and make it more attractive to all, please encourage your clubs and members to provide this feedback.

Lions Clubs International

Dear Lion,

The Board of Directors has voted to cancel the 2020 Lions International Convention due to concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19). This means that the next International Convention will be held in 2021 in Montreal, Canada.

After evaluating a variety of different options including moving the convention to a different venue or postponing the convention to a later date, the Board of Directors voted to cancel the 2020 convention. This decision was made with the health and safety of our Lions, staff and vendors in mind.

Cancelling the International Convention for 2020 impacts international officer continuity and candidate elections. After review of the International Constitution and By-Laws, this impact is outlined below:

• Executive officers and international directors will continue in their respective positions until the 2021 convention in Montreal. All candidate elections for these positions shall comply with the provisions of the International Constitution and By-Laws for election at the convention in Montreal.

• An international director from the areas of Africa and Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the islands of the South Pacific is permitted only in even-numbered years. As a result, no director from Africa and Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the islands of the South Pacific would be eligible for election until the 2022 convention.

• Barring any district election complaints, district governors, first vice district governors and second vice district governors elected during a convention of their respective districts will be accepted by Lions International. The International Board of Directors intends to authorise commencement of the DG terms beginning July 1, 2020.

We are disappointed that we will not be able to move forward with this international event, but we are optimistic that with each new day there is hope, and as Lions we will continue to find new ways to put our kindness in action while safely serving our communities.

Regards,

Dr. Jung-Yul Choi International President

Fellow Lions,

Our membership figures have once again decreased for the February – March period. Our gains are 17 new members with a drop of 21 members.

Currently our membership stands at 1105, an overall loss of 5 from my last report. This now leaves the district 145 from our goal.

I know that everyone is very worried about what is happening in the world at the present time but I feel sure that we will come through this event and be the stronger for it.

It is going to be very difficult to increase membership when we are unable to hold any events with the public.

The GAT team is looking at doing GoTo Meetings every fortnight so that all Lions in 201Q2 can sign in and have their say on how we can work together and get through this situation the best way we can. Please join in.

Membership Report

Dear Cabinet Secretaries.

Thank you for your efforts and that of the Cabinet Secretaries Coordinators in the constantly shifting sands. Please note the following:

a. ID BALLOT: As you are aware, International President Choi has announced the term of existing Board members will be extended for 12 months. For this reason a ballot for ID candidates and the endorsement of a candidate for 3rd International Vice President is no longer required.

b. NOTICES OF MOTION: The Council has determined that time-sensitive Notices of Motion will be dealt with by postal ballot and the package will be e-mailed to all clubs tomorrow. In simple terms:

• Clubs will receive the Notices of Motion and Financial report by e-mail. I would also ask that you forward them to clubs using your own e-mail database.

• Clubs will have until 10 May 2020 to ensure they are in ‘good-standing’. That date is 15 days prior to the date for return of postal ballots.

• Club delegates must complete the included ballot form, with the club number and the signature of the Club President or Secretary. This form must be posted or e-mailed to the National office by 25 May 2020.

• The National Office will be responsible for the count.

Hopefully the 8 week timeframe will assist clubs in canvassing the Notices of Motion by telephone or e-mail in the event that club meetings cannot be held.

c. DIRECTORY RETURNS: Under the circumstances, We will extend the deadline for receipt of Club information by Cabinet Secretaries for the Directory until 22 May 2020. If, in the absence of the usual, pleasurable distractions, your District manages to bring things home sooner, that would also be welcome.

Thank you again for your patience. I hope you all manage to stay well and make the best of things.

Hello from the GAT team.

We hope you are all managing to stay safe and are able to look out for each other whilst maintaining the required social distancing.

Even though some clubs are considering or have gone into recess, I encourage you to look for alternate things you can do to provide support in your community. There is certainly an increasing need in these times.

Please remember that if you are out representing your club and Lions International that you are dressed accordingly with club or other shirt and badge, dress shorts/slacks and shoes (no thongs). Obviously if you are supporting by moving supplies etc the correct safety attire applies.

A few very important things that all clubs must do right now though

Complete your club PU 101 and return to Cabinet Secretary Norm as well as completing it on MyCI so that your incoming officers can connect from July 1. If you don’t do this your club will not be able to function as it should.

Ensure that your Multiple District delegate forms are completed and returned ASAP so that your nominated delegates can vote on the elections and Notices of Motion that require decision this year even though we can’ t meet at convention.

Enable your incoming officers to attend club development training online on Saturday April 18th. We will send 1 link to each club email address.

Any others need to be advised to the email: [email protected]

We unfortunately can not provide enough links (150 link licence) for all officers in each club but will do the best we can. I cannot emphasise enough that it is really important for clubs to take ownership and accountability for their officers access to education and mentorship.

Please ensure they have the opportunity now even though there may be opportunity to follow up later.

Please remember that whilst we do try to provide

support throughout the year; we also have other tasks to complete as part of our volunteer commitment.

As we move through this phase, it is becoming increasingly important to have some form of regular electronic contact with our club members and district officers etc.

We realise that it is also really difficult to maintain your usual fundraising and service projects whilst self isolating.

I have included a list of Lions face book pages below which show a variety of projects and electronic platforms that may be useful to have online meetings.

Don’t forget that you can simply use FaceTime with your members who are on Facebook although there is likely a limit to the amount of people you can connect at once. We are using GoToMeeting in our district and have a 150 person licence. You can try the free version for a meeting and still continue as needed.

For those who are keen to have a look, the below facebook groups are quite useful. On the support ones no question is too small with someone usually able to advise:

Lions Global Action Team Global Lions Forum Lions Clubs Help and Support Group Lions Clubs: Public Image, Graphics and Ideas Hub MyLion Forum Lions Smile ( social media group) Lions worldwide - more about clubs activities

around the world.

Most will usually ask what club you are from +/- Multiple District and occasionally might ask for your member number to let you join.

I hope you find these useful.

Stay safe everyone and we’ll keep in contact as able through our usual channels.

YOTY Correction from March Northern Lion In the March edition of the Northern Lion, the school sponsored by Townsville Mount Stuart Lions Club was

stated as Pimlico State High School. This was incorrect, the students were from William Ross State High School.

My apologies, the information I picked up from Facebook was incorrect!

Annette Clay (Northern Lion editor)

To counteract falling numbers in the YOTY competition, Collinsville Lions Club initiated a Junior section which involved the year 7 students from the three primary schools in the town.

As Year 7 is now incorporated into high school, the Club maintained the Primary School Junior section with the year 6 students and commenced an Intermediate section involving the year 7, 8 and 9 students.

Year 10, 11 and 12 make up the Senior section that goes on to vie for the YOTY Award.

The Club’s Senior winner from Year 9 this year, declined the chance to compete in the Zone Final as he already had too much on his plate with school and sporting activities.

The talent of these students is very high. The schools, their parents and family, and of course the Club should be so proud of every student that participated in this year's competition.

CLUB LEVEL JUDGING

Lions Club of Ingham Lions Club of Ingham held its Club Level Youth of the

Year judging in March, with four outstanding students from Ingham State High School. Each student represented themselves and their school very well and spoke confidently, making it very difficult for the judges to choose. The Overall Winner from the Club judging was Jordan DiBella.

ZONE LEVEL JUDGING

Zone 2 The Zone 2 Lions Clubs of Atherton,

Mareeba, Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Yungaburra, together with Yungaburra Lioness Club, held the Zone Level judging at the Atherton Hotel, hosted by Lions Club of Atherton.

Six students competed, with the Public Speaking prize being taken out by Aarin Ryan of St Stephen’s College, sponsored by the Lions Club of Malanda.

The overall winner—for the second year—was Gamuchirai Makoti of Mareeba State High School, sponsored by Lions Club of Mareeba.

Pictured (above): Judges Trevor Duncan, Jane Harte and Connie Duncan, with Zone 2 Overall Winner Gamu Makoti.

CANCELLATION OF FURTHER JUDGING LEVELS Sadly, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic currently sweeping the world, the remainder of

the 2020 Youth of the Year Competition has been cancelled. No district or further level judging will take place. See YOTY Coordinator Rachel Davey’s report on the next page.

Zones 5, 6 and 7 Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs of

Zones 5, 6 and 7 held their Zone Level Youth of the Year competition recently.

The Public Speaking prize was taken out by Max Robson of Pimlico High School, sponsored by the Townsville Northern Suburbs Lioness Club.

The Overall Winner on the night was Saskia Logan from Cathedral School, sponsored by Twin Cities Leo Club.

CANCELLATION OF FURTHER YOTY JUDGING

With the cancellation of the District, State and National Youth of the Year for 2020 I would like to formally thank each Youth of the Year coordinator for their tireless hours in organising their club final.

This year we had 33 clubs who held their club finals, but only zones 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 completed their zone final before the pin was pulled. Three students were then ready to compete in the district final.

Many zones intended to hold their finals on the weekend that the District Governors decided not to continue with the quest for 2020.

Here are the statistics for the Q2 District which I gathered from the Winners’ advisory forms after the completion of each club final.

• 35 Males

• 70 females

• 63 judges (only 8 being NAB personal)

• 18 Government schools

• 17 Non-government schools

• 915 people in the Audience

I would also like to thank Lion Glenda Powers for all the work she did for me over the last three months, for without her vital input into the district final, I would have been lost.

Thank you also to the Lions who found me the five judges who were to do the interviews.

A huge thank you to Faye and Alan Webb (pictured) who have done an amazing job of running Camp Kanga since Ron and Sue left in January. They regularly camped at our camp with their caravan and had helped Diane out when she and Gordon were our managers. We are so very grateful for their help and the camp is looking so good thanks to their hard work. Now they are moving on.

Thanks also to Beverley and Stuart Harrop from Mission Beach, who looked after the camp until our new managers, Kris and Helena Walker, took over in mid-March.

The Camp Kanga committee thank these people very much for stepping up to help us out.

We are very happy to welcome Kris and Helena Walker as our new Camp Kanga Managers. They, and their two beautiful little girls, took over on the 15th of March. Then the world went crazy and we have lost lots of group bookings since then. But they are finding things to do and get sorted down there. We do thank them for being there during these difficult times we are all going through at the moment.

The Camp Kanga Committee would also like to thank the following Lions clubs for their

voluntary donations in the last semi annual dues. It is very much appreciated.

Leos enjoy themselves at State Conference

Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions feed Townsville’s

Greening the City volunteers

On Saturday 15 Feb this year Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions Club continued their long-standing association with the Townsville City Council’s Greening the City initiative.

The Townsville City Council holds a number of events throughout the year planting native trees and cleaning up community areas with Northern Suburbs Lions there to keep the volunteers supplied with a sausage sizzle and cold drinks.

Pictured: (above) Lion William Gregory helping keep up the strength of one of the young volunteers on the day by supplying a sausage sizzle; and (below) Townsville City Mayor Jenny Hill poses with the BBQ team of Lions Jan Sullivan and William Gregory.

Over the weekend of March 13 to 15, the Queensland Leos got together for their annual state conference. This year, the conference was hosted by our own Q2 Leos at Camp Kanga! We were lucky enough to have 36 Leos in attendance representing 7 Leo Clubs from across our districts as well as 12 Lions.

Leos participated in several workshops and challenges that developed team building skills, networking, leadership skills and found ourselves making new connections and friendships. We were inspired and motivated by our new Leo friends. We heard from Sergeant Billy Li from the Whitsunday PCYC and also saw three inspirational Leos speak as a part of this year's state final for the Leo of the Year competition. Kai Spence from Q4 will represent Queensland at the national level.

We also participated in a joint service project packing pencil cases for the Ronald McDonald House “Books on Beds” program which we all found really rewarding.

The annual quad skulling trophy was also up for grabs again with a new place to call home with the Aspley Leo Club (Q3) after six consecutive wins by CQ Leos (Q4).

Ask our Leos about their weekend away! Next year, the state conference will be held in Q3 just outside of Toowoomba.

Mission Beach Lions help the Aged keep in touch ...

COVID-19 social distancing rules and closure of pubs, means Mission Beach Lions can’t do their usual fundraising activities, but that hasn’t stopped the Club members supporting our community.

Recently, President Charles Rick presented three iPads to Tully Nursing home. With the strict new rules restricting visitors to aged care facilities, these new iPads will allow residents to continue to keep in contact with their loved ones using video calls.

Thank you to everyone in our community who has donated to Lions fundraisers, this allows our club to give back to our community.

Atherton Lions assist Junior Golf

via Meat Tray

Atherton Lions earmarked their monthly Meat Tray Raffle in January for the Atherton Junior Golf members.

Junior Golfers, together with a couple of parents, joined Club members on the ’pub and club crawl’ selling tickets. Another successful night, with the Club able to donate $900.00 towards the group’s expenses.

… and acknowledge the stresses of supermarket workers

Mission Beach Lions President Charles Rick, on behalf of our members, recently presented a gift basket of goodies to all the staff at Mission Beach Woolworths.

It was upsetting to hear that some people (a minority) in their community have not been behaving in a respectful and kind manner to staff at Woolworths.

This behaviour by a minority is not who we are as a community.

Please be kind and patient with those around you. We live in Mission Beach because of our great sense of community - let’s remember that and show that in our actions in these coming months.

Mission Beach Lions wanted to thank all the staff at Woolworths for continuing to service everyone in the Mission Beach area.

ALCCRF AND CURRENT

FUNDRAISING

Dear Lions,

Due to the current situation surrounding the Covid-19, ALCCRF have needed to make some changes to our fundraising especially the Lions Biggest BBQ and Australian Lions Longest Coin Line.

Lions Biggest BBQ: As mentioned above, this has now been suspended and we no longer expect Clubs to hold BBQ’s in support of Childhood Cancer Research. The Clubs that have registered an indication of participation, will be contacted and requested to make a donation instead.

Australian Longest Coin Line: Fundraising and the attempt on the Guinness World Record scheduled for November this year has been postponed until a further review mid-year.

As you can imagine, our cash flow in the coming months could be dramatically reduced as a result of Club Activity. At this point the Foundation is able to meet its financial commitments of quarterly payments to ALCCRF Fellowships, Cancer Australia and the Immunotherapy Project for the foreseeable future. Our position will be reviewed at the end of the Financial Year.

HOW CAN CLUBS HELP?

Donations: If your Club has available funds to make some donation, it would be most appreciated, especially those who intended to do the Biggest BBQ.

Awards: Usually at this time of the year Clubs are looking to say thank you to a Club Member or a member of the Community for their assistance, going the extra yard and helping during this Lion’s Year, by purchasing an Award for presentation would also be a great help with our finances. If you need any help in purchasing the Award or where to send the donation either by cheque or Direct Deposit please contact me.

For the clubs that have donated this year or have already purchased awards, we say Thank You, for giving every child with cancer a chance at a healthy life.

With ANZAC Day services cancelled, here’s something to reflect on (Editor)

More than one story

Every year, Australia attends dawn services to commemorate Anzac Day. But as the years pass by new stories emerge, giving a different perspective on Australia’s ‘Baptism of Fire.’

We often look at wars through a national prism, forgetting that soldiers suffered and families lost their children on all sides. We forget the people they left behind. Sometimes, we forget soldiers who remind us of difficult parts of our history. Let’s take a look at some forgotten Anzac stories.

Defending their homes

Last year, for the centenary commemoration, Erdem Koç reminded us that there are many stories surrounding the ‘Anzac legend’, and some are much less known than others. In his article for The Conversation, he explained how the battle of Gallipoli was a small part of a bigger combat that lasted 18 months for the Turks, who were defending their home.

‘If anything, the notion of ‘sacrificing for freedoms’ is truer for the Turks,’ he says. ‘Had the hundreds of thousands of young men not joined the army and headed to Gallipoli, had the bravery displayed on the frontlines not happened, it’s without doubt modern Turkey would not have been formed.’ He adds:

‘For the Australians, the battle was one fought for the imperialistic purposes of a self-serving empire, which had control over young Australia’s foreign policy. For the Turks, it was about defending the nation from enemy invasion.’

In 1934, Turkey’s first President encouraged reconciliation between Australia, New Zealand and Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk wrote:

‘Here in this country of ours you, the mothers, Who sent their sons from far away countries,

Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace

After having lost their lives on this land They have become our sons as well.’

So although we were part of the invading force, there is now a measure of unity in how we deal with Anzac Day. But what about the stories of Australian soldiers that don’t quite fit into our ideas of what an Anzac looks like?

Indigenous soldiers at Gallipoli

Indigenous Australians were not legally Australian citizens until 1967. So in 1914, there were significant cultural barriers for Indigenous Australians and this extended to joining the army. By 1917, these barriers were slightly relaxed and some soldiers were allowed to enlist. Gary Oakley, a war memorial Indigenous liaison officer at the Australian War Memorial, explains that Indigenous Australians were treated equally in the army:

‘Once in the service, as an indigenous soldier, you were treated as an equal; you have the same options for pay. When you are in the trenches, you don’t have the option of disliking the person behind you’

Historians think 50 Aboriginal soldiers fought in Gallipoli. Thirteen of them died there. It’s thought 800-1000 Aboriginal soldiers served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I, with around 250-300 killed.

There are now efforts to highlight this history. In 2014, the Dawn Service started with Able Seaman Darren Davies, from the Yidinji people, playing the didgeridoo. He declared:

‘There’s definitely some nerves there – but on the day it’s not the nerves, it’s more the pride in coming out and being part of the Anzac tradition … and what it means for indigenous men and women. That’s important to me. And I hope it leaves a mark for future generations.’

Women: at war and left behind

There are other stories about Anzacs we might not know, like those of the women who went to war, and those who were left behind.

During WWI, women made a major contribution to the war effort, at the front as nurses, and at home, working and taking care of the families that soldiers had to leave behind. According to the Australian Department of Defence, 2,562 AANS nurses joined active service during WWI, with 423 of these women serving in Australia.

Lest we forget

Exploring our hidden stories is important when commemorating Anzac Day. If we don’t know the full picture, we aren’t respecting the whole amazing history of our involvement in global conflict.

News from our Cakes & Mints Chairman

Has your Club considered selling Lions Christmas cakes mid-year? Hopefully the current restrictions on movement in and around the country may ease in time for Christmas in July functions to go ahead.

If not, the ‘use by’ date on cakes means they are okay for at least a year, so you would have them on tap for the end of the year if you purchased now.

If you have any queries at all regarding cakes, puddings or mints, please contact:

Valé Bryan Parry

20 February 1939 – 6 February 2020

Lion Bryan Parry joined Townsville Host Lions Club in October 1973. It wasn’t long before he was the Secretary, then Treasurer before his first stint as President in 1980-81. He held many positions up till 1991 when he became President again, and received his Melvin Jones Fellowship that year.

In 1997 he transferred to Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions Club and was President there in 1999-2000 (he had the Townsville Highland Pipe Band to lead him in at Changeover) and in 2000-2001 he was granted Life Membership of Lions Clubs International.

Bryan held all positions at club level on many occasions, but more importantly, he was a hard working and reliable member, always ready to volunteer and see the job through. We were proud to present him with his 45 year Monarch at Glendale

Nursing Home just over 12 months ago.

Lion Bryan also held many positions at District level. These included Mint and Cake chair for over 10 years; he was also a District Convention Secretary, District Cabinet Secretary, and on the Townsville Low Vision Clinic Board of Management.

Bryan was a dedicated Lion and a loyal friend. He will be sadly missed.

As Clubs and Members have been advised, due to the current coronavirus travel and isolation impacts, the Youth Exchange Program has been cancelled for June/July 2020.

The Program committee intends to run one camp in Australia in this next summer but importantly it is

expected that a full, usual mid-year program will be up and running again at this time in 2021.

Thanks are extended to those members and families who were considering hosting with this year’s program, and in particular to those regular participating families.

Take care and keep well everybody,

Phyllis Diller wisdom ...

As your beauty fades, so will his eyesight.

Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance?

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shovelling the sidewalk before it stops snowing.

Best way to get rid of kitchen odors: Eat out.

A bachelor is a guy who never made the same mistake once.

I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them.

Most children threaten at times to run away from home. This is the only thing that keeps some parents going.

We spend the first twelve months of our children's lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next twelve years telling them to sit down and shut up.

What I don't like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.

His finest hour lasted a minute and a half.

My photographs don't do me justice -they look just like me.

I asked the waiter, 'Is this milk fresh?' He said, 'Lady, three hours ago it was grass.'

The reason the golf pro tells you to keep your head down is so you can't see him laughing.

The computer problem ...

Becky was 73 and had just got her first computer. After her son spent over two hours teaching her how to use it, she was sure she knew everything there was to know about computers.

Unfortunately though, one day she couldn’t get it to start, so she promptly called an IT guy to come over and take a look at it.

The IT guy managed to fix the issue in a few minutes and before he left, he phoned his boss, explaining the issue.

Becky was sure it must have been a very serious problem, and, wanting to let her son know, said to the guy: ’Excuse me, if you don’t mind me asking, I couldn’t help overhearing you on the phone with your boss. What exactly is an Id ten T problem?’

The man smiled, took out a pen and wrote it down for her: I-D-10-T.
