Greetings from the Mayor -
As we’ve moved into autumn let’s reflect on events and accomplishments made in looking toward the future of our Town. We came together in support of our children at the 2nd annual Unity Rally held at the Decatur Street Bridge on Saturday, September 28th and it was a great success. We showcased many resources available to school-aged children and their families. The Bladensburg High School JROTC cadets led the crowd with the presentation of the colors. We had representatives from the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department, the County’s Sheriff Department, National Alliance on Mental Illness, End Time Harvest Ministries, Jubilee Church, PGC Department of Social Services/Rogers Heights Elementary, DC Roller Girls, The Sean Psalms National Financial Literacy Campaign and author and anti-bullying apps developer, Kiera Douglas. Many thanks to District 47 State Senator Malcolm Augustine, Prince George’s County Council Member Jolene Ivey, Mayor Takisha James of Bladensburg, Mayor Shawn Molden of Capital Heights and other elected officials who joined our event alongside those in the Edmonston community who participated as well. A special thanks to our chef, Council Member John Johnson. Thanks always to our town Council Members Turberville, Bennet-White and Layne for your support. The Rally concluded with participants holding hands across the Decatur Street Diversity Bridge.
While I hope you’ve eased from summer into the fall, Edmonston staff and elected officials have been working on the following:
• Completing a grant application to the Maryland Department ofNatural Resources to construct a rubberized exercisewalking/jogging trail at the Edmonston Recreation Center park.(Grant award in May 2020)
• Completed a grant application to the Chesapeake Bay Trust for the development of a comprehensive town-wide storm water restoration plan using green stormwater infrastructure to guide our future efforts to implement the Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) strategies in concert with the plans developed by Prince George’s County and the Maryland Department of Environment.
• Code Enforcement has continued to update business licenses, obtaining PGC Certificate of Use and Occupancy permits for businesses and current application information. We have identified 43 rental properties in Town.
• We had a public hearing about the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development refinancing our General Obligation Debt for the 2009 Decatur Street Improvements that were financed through T.D.Bank obtaining a lower interest rate.
• We received notification that we have been recertified for Sustainable Maryland. We received the award at the MML Fall Conference in October.
• Received the final grant approval for the Crittenden Streetscape to add street lights, trash cans, and benches with a project completion by May, 2020.
• Completed the contract for the design of the Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk project. that will happen next Spring. We removed 5 trees on 52nd to allow for the placement.
• We closed the Edmonston Beautiful 2018 grant and now have 7 applications for the Edmonston Beautiful 2019 grant. We will hear in October if we receive another grant for this purpose and if we will receive the façade improvement grant.
• We’ve met several times with an economic development prospect of creating an “Edmonston Collective” market place for “makers” to display their wares.
• The grant project to construct the six rain gardens on 46th Avenue has begun. We will be recruiting volunteers to help plant the gardens in early November.
• The Town received its 3rd award for Veteran’s Park from the Prince George’s County Beautification Committee. Council Member Johnson accepted the award on behalf of the town.
• The 23d Annual Port Towns Day was conducted successfully. Administrator Rod Barnes was recognized as the Employee of the Year and Edmonston resident Freida Parks was named Volunteer of the Year. Thanks to both for the outstanding work they do for the Town.
• The Event Committee is working hard on planning Fall activities. The Halloween party on October 26th
included new features such as hayrack rides and an outdoor movie “Hotel Transylvania”. Also, a pancake breakfast to benefit Bladensburg High School JROTC is in planning for Veteran’s Day along with another Casino night for seniors.
• We spruced up Town Hall meeting room. The carpets have been cleaned, the room painted, ceiling tile replaced and we’ve gotten new curtains.
• We had Fall Dumpster Day at Town Hall and we’re scheduling the Fall street sweeping.• Traffic arrows and signage directing vehicles in the appropriate lanes were added to Decatur Street at
Kenilworth.• The Yard of the Month winner for September is Lucida Baron at 4706 Gallatin.• Met with the Hispanic community to discuss a potential ordinance for establishing guidelines on the
how the Edmonston Police Department will deal with ICE and deportations.• We planted trees, daffodil bulbs and mulch for rain garden planting as part of the County’s Growing
Green with Pride on Saturday, October 19th.• We are working on a grant application to add sidewalks on Emerson, 51st Avenue, 51st Place and 52nd
Place.• We are working on another summer camp grant application for 2020. It will be similar to this year’s
camp.

Saludos del alcalde Gant,
A medida que avanzamos en otoño, reflexionemos sobre los eventos y logros realizados mientras miramos hacia el futuro de nuestra ciudad. Nos reunimos en apoyo de nuestros hijos en el segundo rally anual de Unity celebrado en el puente de la calle Decatur el sábado, 28 de septiembre y fue un gran éxito. Founded in 2006, DC Rollergirls is a 501(c) (3) volunteer-run non-profit. We are proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the international governing body for women’s amateur flat track roller derby. WFTDA is composed of skater-owned and operated. Our non-profit league is run by skaters and dedicated volunteers, who contribute their free time and talents to manage the business side of the league — everything from organizing fundraising events to designing promotional materials. The DC Rollergirls also maintain a strong sense of pride in our community by partnering with local charities and participating in local events. Our league’s vision is to promote athleticism, diversity and roller derby, and foster self-worth, personal strength and female empowerment. The women who make up the league come from all walks of life — they are engineers, architects, lawyers, teachers, nurses, writers, artists, librarians and work-at-home moms. They came to this sport as novice and experienced skaters, as seasoned athletes and as former couch potatoes. But they all have one thing in common — they are strong, fierce, competitive athletes who are passionate about roller derby.

THEFT PREVENTION & UNWANTED ANIMAL GUESTS Unfortunately, we need to worry about those people who won’t obey the laws and are always looking for the easiest way to commit crimes. The Edmonston Police Department needs your partnership to make it hard for would-be criminals by contacting the police when you see something that looks wrong. When the weather cools, we all want to open the windows and doors for fresh air and to save on that electric bill. However, here are a couple of things to think about when doing so as wildlife like to explorer and an open window or door can mean an open invitation. While we have the normal sightings of deer, raccoons, fox and possum in Prince Georges County and Montgomery County, in Charles County bears have been sighted. So, enjoy the weather and nature but keep an eye out for those unwelcomed visitors.

• Rake leaves to the curb or driveway. DO NOT RAKE LEAVES INTO THE STREET. • Pile leaves away from cars and storm drains. The leaf vacuum cannot reach around cars. • Keep your leaves free of any trash, bottles, rocks, or branches.
Piles of leaves with trash will not be picked up. It can damage the equipment, cause delays and may cause an injury to personnel operating the machine.
• Noise and dust may be noticeable; dry conditions generate more dust. We apologize for any inconvenience. If the leaves are wet and heavy on the scheduled pickup day, they will not be picked up until dry conditions
return.
